80th anniversary of the first commercial flight at Madrid-Barajas Airport
On the 15th May 1933 the first commercial plane, a three-engine Fokker VII, landed at Madrid-Barajas Airport, although the official inauguration of the airport was two years earlier, on the 30th April 1931.LAPE, the Spanish Air Mail Service, was one of the first airlines to use the airport, with a regular flight to Barcelona and Seville. This airline later became Iberia. The ticket price, approved on December 1932, was 150 pesetas for the flight Madrid-Barcelona and 125 pesetas for the flight Madrid-Sevilla in a FockerVII/3M with capacity for 8 passengers and 2 cabin crew. After 80 years, more than 990 million of passengers have flown in almost 10,65 million of flights from Madrid-Barajas Airport, which has become the 5th airport in the European ranking by passenger traffic volume, serving 45,1 million of passengers in 2012.
Aena Aeropuertos started the consultation process for the handling tender on the 30th May 2013
that will last two months during which airlines and third parties will be able to submit their comments to Aena Aeropuertos, who will develop the technical specifications to launch the tender during the second half of the year.A total of 50 ramp handling licenses will be put out to tender to facilitate the service in 43 airports and 2 heliports for a period of time of 7 years.
Aena’s Airports will offer close to 50 million seats to Europe during the 2013 Summer Season
that started on the 31st of March, which represents a 5% increase in the seat offer to European destinations compared to last year’s Summer Season. Among the countries with the highest growth in departing seats are the UK (+8%), the Nordic Countries (+25%) and Germany (+7%). Another countries with a noteworthy growth in departing seats are the Russian Federation (+48%) and Africa (+27%). This data represent the positive evolution of international tourism in Spain, as the Spanish Airports have 79 additional routes to the European market. It is noteworthy that, according to Anna.aero, Aena (Spain) is the second European country in terms of new route development in 2013, with a very close margin from the first, the UK (a difference of only 9 routes!). Furthermore, Barcelona Airport is the leader of the global route development ranking by airports.

Potential routes without direct traffic
Bilbao is a business and tourism destination in Northern Spain whose nature, architecture, cuisine, innovation and tradition makes it one of the preferred destinations in Spain. With near 6,700 indirect passengers to Switzerland, is a destination that could be a potencial market to serve.
Also Seville, with 3,400 indirect passengers to Zurich, is a destination with no direct traffic. You can learn more about what can Seville offer
to you in section “Discover Spanish Airports”.
Outside of Spain Peninsula, the Canary Islands offer one potential route to Switzerland from La Palma.

Potential routes from Japan to Spain
Madrid, like any modern metropolis, has several shopping centers and small family-run shops selling traditional goods. Tourists usually visit the museums (Prado, Reina Sofia, Thyssen) the city center (Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor), the Royal Palace and the Cathedral. There are 9 UNESCO World Heritage sites situated less than two hours away from the city (Alcala de Henares, Toledo, Cuenca, Segovia, Ávila, Salamanca, Córdoba, the Monastery and Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and the
Aranjuez Cultural Landscape). The nightlife in Madrid is one of the city’s main attractions.
Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is a well known business and tourism destination in the Mediterranean. With 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Park Güell, Palau Güell, Casa Milá, Casa Vicens, Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló, Palau de la Música and Sant Pau Hospital), wonderfull beaches and a wide variety of festivals, Barcelona is an attractive destination all year round

Other interesting connections
Spain has no direct conection with Japan, however during 2012 nearly 157,000 indirect passengers travelled between Spain and Japan.
Also during during 2012, 203,000 indirect passengers travelled between Latinamerica and Japan. As Spain is the main gateway between Latinamerica and Asia, there is a potential route from Japan that would capture an important share of this indirect traffic.

Public Holidays in Spain Did you know?
Los Sanfermines, the bullfighting fiesta. The city of Pamplona is world famous thanks to its San Fermín fiestas. Thousands of people come every year to experience the risk and excitement of the popular running of the bulls, immortalised by Ernest Hemingway in his novel Fiesta. San Fermín starts on 6th July at midday. At that moment the chupinazo is launched from the balcony of the town hall. It is a rocket that marks the official start of the fiesta, causing an outburst of joy amidst the crowd gathered in the square. The first running of the bulls is held the following day: at 8am the doors of the Santo Domingo corral are opened, and hundreds of people run in front of the bulls on their route through the old town to the bullring. One of the most exciting moments happens a few minutes before the start of the running of the bulls, when runners entrust themselves to San Fermín, singing three times in front of a small statue on Cuesta de Santo Domingo Street.
For nine days, Pamplona residents and visitors, dressed typically in red and white, get carried away by the continuous festive spirit that invades the streets. Furthermore, every morning

during the fiestas there is a parade of “giants and big-heads” through the centre of the city, for the children to enjoy. The festive programme also includes open-air celebrations, concerts, dance exhibitions and, of course, bullfights. San Fermín finishes on 14th July at midnight, when the
crowds make their way to the Town Hall Square and, with candles alight, sing “Pobre de mí”, to bid farewell to the fiesta until the following year.

GastronomyGastronomy in Seville is as rich as it is diverse: old recipes that has been passing through generations, mixing traditional and modern cooking. In Seville there are excellent national and international food restaurants, but it is the “tapeo” the real brand mark of Seville’s gastronomy. If the visitor wants to really get to know this brand mark, he or she will need to taste the wide variety of tapas available in bars and taverns. Fried fish, here known as “pescaíto frito”, is almost an obligation, specially anchovies, puntillitas, and marinated dogfish. The “Tapeo” is not limited to eating and drinking, but it is more of a social activity, which protocol has been strictly described by the experts: you need to harmonize
the different flavors into an intensity scale and during a certain period of time.
FlamencoFlamenco is the most pure expression of the Andalusian soul. Its origins, still unknown, are related to the gypsies’ arrival to Seville and Cadiz fields in the 15th century. Among other theories, it is believed that they came from a North Indian region called Sid, actually part of Pakistan, from where left due to from some wars or maybe foreign invasions. In the middle of the 19th century, it became popular through the cafes known as “cafés cantantes”. The first one opened in Seville around 1885.
Flamenco is a complex concept, with several variables and difficult to attach to a unique social or ethnic group. In Seville, visitors can enjoy daily flamenco shows thanks to the direct heirs of the “cafés cantantes”: the “tablaos flamencos”. There are shows in the different old neighborhoods and in small town festivals.
