Since the early 2000’s, freestyle scooting has grown from an underground hobby actively pursued by a few diehards to

one of the fastest growing action sports in the world. Today, the industry has expanded to include professional riders, photographers, videographers and national and international governing bodies. It has also gained greater recognition in the wider extreme sports community with consistent invitations to exhibit at X-Game events, participation in FISE, inclusion in the travelling extreme circus that is Nitro Circus and also National television interviews for some of the world’s top riders.

The Daily Grind provides the freestyle scooter community with a magazine detailing the sport and the lifestyle associated with it. We wanted to give fans a magazine that not only allows them to keep up to date with all the happenings in the sport itself, but also one that will give them an insight into the day to day lives of some of their favourite riders.

We have high hopes for The Daily Grind and we hope you enjoy it. We would also like to say a big thank you to all the killer photographers, riders and brands who have helped make this first issue a reality. We look forward to working with you again in the future.

Happy shredding! • TDG Team

Born in Paris, raised in Switzerland (not Sweden), I’m 24 years old and still riding. I’ve been riding my scooter for

11 beautiful years now and still enjoying it, just like the day I got my first piece of metal. God it was fun! Fun... This is what it is all about. You don’t do something because it’s boring, but because it’s fun. The more you enjoy it, the better you get. Opportunities come with time, but if you wait for them it might never happen. Live your life to the fullest and enjoy every second. This is how I got my friends and in time, sponsors. I thank

Micro so much for all the opportunities they gave me and all the other brands for the experiences (good and bad) they brought me. Wow that was philosophical, haha. But I hope you got it, have fun! Also, keep your head safe, wear a helmet! For the street homies, it’s up to you guys, I’m not your mum.

Big up to all the homies in Australia, I can’t wait to see you guys again soon. And thank you to the guys at The Daily Grind Magazine for giving me the opportunity to contribute to your mag.

Ryan Upchurch has make some big moves so far in 2014. He recently signed to Grit Scooters, moved from

the east to the west coast of America and has had to adjust to life after high school. He’s doing a great job of dealing with these changes while still maintaining a

strong presence in the freestyle scooter community. Between working on his riding style, developing his trick catalogue, shooting rad flicks and pushing Percept Eyewear (his own sunglasses company), Ryan found the time to have a chat with us about life from his point of view.

Life has been nothing but a thrill ride since getting out of high-school last year. This time has taught me more than I can say about who I am and what really matters to me. I have been very busy traveling since landing my spot with Grit Scooters earlier this year. When I’m not travelling I’m living in Portland and have been for a little over 18 months now. There’s a lot to love about the West Coast life! Although a lot of my time is spent riding, I spend even more of it working between all the different things I take part in within the industry.

Since late 2013, I have been devoting whatever free time I have to developing Percept Eyewear, my new sunglass brand devoted to the active human. I have a full BMX, Scooter, and Skate team so I spend a lot of my time working with those athletes, developing new sunglasses, and taking care of all of our website and online needs. Since starting the brand I have learned a lot about the ups and downs that a business can have and how it alters my personal lifestyle during those times. There’s been times where I haven’t had much food in my cabinet or a car to get to the store because I cared more about keeping my dream alive more than anything in the world. Hours of lost sleep behind computer screens has been a regular thing since starting the business, but that’s to be expected. Now, with the

2014 Christmas season approaching, I am launching our first two polarized high-end lines of sunglasses and improved versions of all of our other lines. Within those lines we have a classic aviator style shade as well as a line of authentic handmade bamboo glasses. I know there will be challenges and hours of exhausting work ahead, but I feel confident moving forward knowing that it has been worthwhile every step of the way to build something that I can call my own. I am excited to see where things go from here to say the least and every pair that is sold means the world to myself and everyone involved.

The Essential Custom for this issue is pretty sweet. We’ve got the recently released Urban Artt JD Signature bars which are

one of the nicest looking bars in ages. At roughly 24.5” wide and 26.5” high they’re a force to be reckoned with. Topping off the bars are a set of Root Industries grips which are a good mix of comfort and durability.

Sticking with Urban Artt we’ve got the also recently released Trail deck. At 4.75” wide and 20.75” long it’s a really comfortable choice for anyone shorter than 6’. Compared to other decks, the Trail has about the same amount of foot space (14.5”) as an Ethic Lindworm but it’s about an inch shorter overall. Compared to an Envy AOS V3, the Trail is about the same size but it doesn’t feel quite as small.

For compression we’re running a Tilt ARC SCS clamp with Tilt Nimbus forks. The Nimbus forks are slimmer than Tilt Legacy’s and also feature an integrated star nut, which is way easier to work with. The ARC SCS clamp is curvier than Tilt’s classic SCS, but a bit too similar in appearance to District’s SCS. Saying that, the 6mm screws are pretty handy. We’ve also snuck in a Tilt Integrated Headset which is nice and smooth.

Finishing off the custom are a set of River Glide Wheels with Root Industries ABEC 11 Bearings. The Glides are pretty similar to Proto Grippers, and so I would recommend them for park use. If you like blasting at top speed get these wheels!

From the Essential Outfit, I’m a big fan of the Canvas undies and the Vex VT1’s. The Canvas undies are a long length and made from a really soft material. The Vex VT1’s are a comfy fit and inconspicuous for a shoe made by a scooter brand. Much style! • JOSH HARDY

There are few riders that could claim to be as passionate about scootering as Matt McKeen. He has been here

from the very beginning and continues to be a huge influence on fans and brands around the world. Matt sets an example through his riding which continues to amaze, but also through his desire to push the sport to new heights, and develop a subculture designed to benefit the scooter community.

The key to taking the sport to the next level is being innovative which is something Matt achieves through teaming up with various rider-owned brands to assist with their growth, and developing Trendkill Scooters, a popular news blog site, with fellow veteran Alex Peasley. It was a great opportunity to hear what Matt had to say and definitely worth a read. After you’re done don’t forget to pay Trendkill Scooters a visit!

With the help of my good buddy Alex Peasley, we started Trendkill Scooters. In its current incarnation it’s a blog outpost where we create videos of our adventures and present the community with riders and ideas that we feel represent scooter riding at its finest. I’d like to keep working behind the scenes with scooter companies and I want Trendkill to become more than just an online blog. Only time will tell!

I’ve recently relocated back to my hometown in Washington, D.C from Philadelphia. When I left this city years ago there were no scooter riders, but now I have come back there’s a whole crew of dudes who call themselves FAT CAT. We’re working on a video called the DC Diaries which is like the sequel to the Philly Files, but with a whole different line up. I think I’ll keep making videos like these so you

guys can look forward to insights into the scene for every city that I move to. All that being said, I only see myself continuing to ride and put out videos until my body can’t handle it anymore. There’s still many years of shredding and traveling ahead and I can’t wait to see where scootering will take me next.

During October, Max Peters and Warick (Wazzeh) Beynon from Envy, and Vincent Kudrna from Fasen travelled

to New Zealand to hit up some sweet spots, meet many of their passionate fans and let everyone know about the new range of Envy and Fasen completes. We don’t

hear too much from New Zealand, but we hear enough to know that their scooter community is growing at a fast rate and many keen shredders are popping up all over the country. We’ll be keeping an eye on them and it’s great to see Envy and Fasen showing them some love.

Vincent and Max flew from Melbourne to Auckland and got to work sorting out the campervan, which involved watching a very inspirational operational and safety video.

To be honest though, the camper had some pretty awesome features. Tired from travelling, they found somewhere to park and crashed for the night.

I woke up and cruised into Auckland and waited to pick up Wazzeh at the airport. Meanwhile, Max and Vincent dropped by Scooter Pro in Auckland and checked in with

Jasper to get some info on the upcoming trip and the NZ scene. They also signed some gear for the shop before heading off to pick up Waz. Despite running on one hour of sleep following a gig in Sydney, Waz, the trooper, was ready to roll. Auckland was getting smashed with 100kmh winds but we figured we should make the most of it and head to Barry Curtis to have a roll with the locals. Thankfully the afternoon

2

We started with a good breakfast in Hamilton and drove down to Rotorua Skatepark to chill with the locals. The sun was out and the weather was sweet,

providing the boys with a good chance to take some pics and films some clips. In the afternoon we shot off to Taupo for a ride with some shredders. In the evening we set off for Napier, enjoyed a decent meal at the Lone Star and hit the hay ready to ride Sk8zone in the morning.

3

cleared while we were at the park and the boys stacked some clips, dished out some stickers and signed plenty of posters. We caught up with the Yes Please crew and headed off to Randwick Skatepark, winding our way through the back streets in the burbs to get there. Afterwards we travelled to Hamilton for the night, keen to rest up for the next day.

Sk8 Zone in Napier was sweet! It was another fine day riding with people who had travelled from all over NZ to hit up the park. Maz, Wazzeh and Vincent were ripping it up and put on a

great show. Late in the arvo we drove down to Wellington, ready to catch the ferry to the South Island in the morning.

4We got up pretty early for the ferry from Wellington to Picton, it doesn’t wait for anyone! We hit up Nelson Skatepark where the locals were super pumped to see us.

Definitely some little shredders here! Great atmosphere and cheers to everyone for coming down to say hey.

The last day! It was a long drive back to Christchurch where we caught our flights back to OZ. New Zealand was epic. Max, Wazzeh and Vincent all had a ripper time and we’re

definitely keen to come back. Cheers to everyone we met along the way and I’m sure we’ll see you again soon. CHURR!!

Today we headed into Christchurch to hit up the legendary Washington SP. It didn’t disappoint! Heaps of locals were keen to meet the boys and the weather was

perfect once again, making for a great day out. Waz filmed a few street clips in the carpark and had some awesome chills with some NZ riders.

6Off to Queenstown today! It was a long drive but definitely worth it for the epic scenery along the way. Lake Takapo was sooo nice and the views of Mt Cook were amazing.

Driving all over NZ is a sweet experience and the landscape rocks. We arrived in Queenstown in the arvo and headed out shortly after to enjoy the nightlife.

The day of reckoning for us! We booked in to tackle the biggest swing in the world, the Nevis Swing. Suspended 160 metres above the ground, you’re suddenly released and

head straight for the other side of the valley at 120kph. Soo huge but insanely epic! If you’re ever in the area you definitely have to hit it up. Cheers to everyone for having us!

The Scooter Hut Pro Series was held in September and October this year and showcased some quality riding by some of the world’s best. With a $10,000 first prize up for grabs, every rider was keen to put their best efforts on display. Backing up a 2nd place finish at the ISA World Championships, Dylan Morrison (Australia, APEX Pro Scooters) took out this year’s series, followed closely by Billy Watts (Australia, MGP) and Capron Funk (USA, Lucky Scooters) on his first visit down under. The Pro Series was a huge success and is looking to be bigger and better in 2015. For now, make sure to check out the Pro Series DVD when it drops. PHOTO • PROSCOOTERSERIES.COM

We’ve seen a few team changes this year but this one definitely caught us by surprise! After many years repping Phoenix, Ray Warner and Jon Reyes have officially signed with Envy. As they say in their respective announcement clips, nothing particularly bad happened over at Phoenix, they just see Envy as an opportunity to ride, travel and visit fans on a regular basis. It’s great to see another quality street rider, Isaac

Miller, join the Vex family alongside the legendary Matt McKeen. Basing himself out of Denver, this Tilt team rider epitomises everything that is right with street riding at the moment. With 5 years of riding under his belt he is a massive addition to the team. Vex has been making some big moves lately and are keen to push into the USA heading into 2015. They are definitely waving the banner for street riders out there while providing a killer shoe that we can all throw down on.

In the last few weeks we’ve seen the release of the 2015 range of Envy and Fasen scooters. We’re familiar with the Prodigy and the King of Spades (KOS), but this year we’re introduced to some new members of the family; the Envy Colt and the Fasen Raven. The Colt fits in underneath the Prodigy, featuring a set of 100mm metal core wheels and a simpler design, perfect for new and/or young riders. The Fasen Raven is a package for your more advanced riders, designed and

In older news, the 2014 ISA World Championship was held in August, hosted by Scootfest at Rush Skatepark in the UK. The hype was massive on finals day following a tight qualifying session the day before. The whole group of fifteen rode brilliantly but, as always, a winner had to be chosen. Dakota Schuetz took first place and his third world title, but only by 0.3 points over Dylan Morrison, making this the closest final ever. The results for third were even closer with Joe Armstrong and Cam Ward split on points. Joe eventually took home the bacon thanks to his better scoring second run. Well done to all the riders involved and the organisers for putting on a world class show. Bring on 2015!

Change is often a positive thing and something we see as essential for the growth of the sport and sometimes riders. We wish the boys and their new sponsor all the best. Big ups to Phoenix as well for helping develop two great ambassadors for the sport. On a side note, Jon’s tie dye Envy tee is pretty rad. Might have to import one of those! successfully tested by Brendon Smith, Tommy Dang and Vincent Kudrna. The biggest eyebrow raiser from the release has been the introduction of 120mm wheels on the Envy KOS models. We’ve seen 125’s gain some traction lately so it will be interesting to see how the 120’s catch on! On a final note, the colours available this year are mouthwatering. Our favourite would have to be the black and gum KOS Soul. Pretty nifty! PHOTOS • SCOOTERHUT.COM.AU

The Funky Projects is a small Melbourne based crew who have slowly come up in the scooter scene

over the last few years. Currently, the crew mainly consists of Ben Duncan, Will Schmitt, Jeremy Petropoulos, Ryger Miers, Reece Smee and Michael Chapman. All of these guys are heavy hitters.

The Funky crew isn’t all about being serious and being the best in the community. We can be found chilling out at a ghetto spot, messing around and not riding much, or out in some suburb trying to find new

spots that suit the rider and what they want to ride. The crew are super talented guys who have varying styles that they bring to the table, which make their videos so enjoyable to watch.

Even if some of the above names don’t sound familiar, keep an eye out for upcoming parts from the boys. Heavy clips have been filmed and you should be excited. Dylan Joel is a rising hip-hop star from Melbourne, Australia, well known for his tireless work ethic and unique style. Dylan rejects the current trends of hip-hop and applies his own positive attitude, creating a refreshing experience for listeners. If you ever get the chance it’s definitely worth hitting him up live as he regularly provides the audience with a memorable experience. We sat down with Dylan recently to see what’s what and get an idea of where he’s heading next.

Who influences your music?

I grew up listening to Tracy Chapman, James Brown, Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor and a bunch of old gospel music. They’ve definitely played a fair roll. Then I’ve got my more currently appreciated artists like Frank Ocean, Bob Marley, Mumford and Sons, and Citizen Cope. It’s funny because I only really got in to hip-hop around the age of 16, which means I’ve only known hip-hop for seven years. So in terms of being knowledgeable and an original hip-hop fan, I don’t know a whole lot. I grew up on so many other styles but what I do know is that there’s something about hip-hop that I’ll just never be able to turn away from. It holds something in the sound that just hits a spot for me, even outside of the moral movement. I’ve got a lot of learning to do still, but to me, it’s home.

What can people expect when they come to see you live?

I’ve got a live band that backs me up who are all real fresh musicians and so I always try to perform with the band bro’s every chance we get. If it’s a headline show you can always expect some mad live hip-hop feels. We love changing the tracks around a

little too, coming up with new grooves and something different for each show.

What is a stand out show that you have played?

St. Kilda Fest was pretty sweet this year! It was a real solid crowd and cool vibe, turning a street into an alleyway stage set up. I think the biggest stand out show this year would have been the BnE snow tour! I mean their headline shows vary between five to eight thousand people, but at the snow the biggest venue only held five to six hundred! So it was a real mad vibe because they were these wild and messy yet intimate shows to sold-out five hundred capacity rooms. It was sick to bounce with that.

Do you have any embarrassing tour stories?

Yeah, we were supporting Bliss N Eso (BnE) at the snow, which was a super sweet experience, and during our set I knocked a full bottle of beer all over Dj Izm’s decks. He had to run out mid song and try to pick it up. Self-centred Dyl over here didn’t even notice he did it! But that’s performances, if you wanna talk about the juicy stuff, you’ll have to stop me in the street, ha.

What do you see as the next step in your career?

Releasing our new record! It’s been a long process man and I’m really taking my time on this drop. Other than that I have no idea what to expect. I find it easier not to have high expectations in guessing what the next step looks like and I would rather just focus on making better music every time and taking the new steps as they come. I’m already doing what I love, meeting new people,

making tunes, jamming and throwing out some positive feels, so everything is just a bonus hey!

What do you do outside of music?

Work, ha! I’ve always been pretty passionate about youth work. Had my ups and downs throughout my teen years and early adolescence, and I had some unreal people in my life to help me on my journey of figuring out who I wanted to be. So I always wanted to pay that forward I guess and try to do the same for other young people! So I’m a youth worker 2 days a week and a workshop facilitator for mental health wellbeing. It’s a really dope movement to be involved in, man.

Are there any key messages you want to share with us?

Always. Plenty, ha. One message that actually first got me in to hip-hop, was a movement started by a dude called Afrika Bambaataa, who is also heavily advocated by Bliss N Eso. He defined hip-hop as a movement representing “Peace, Love, Unity and Having Fun”. This has played a huge roll in my direction and taste in hip-hop and is definitely something I try to push whenever the time is right. I have the BnE boys to thank for introducing me to that, and can’t wait to help spread the same message to more and more people.

Camp Woodward. Known as the mecca of all action sports, many kids dream of going while they are growing up.

And honestly why wouldn’t you? Foam pits, resi ramps, dirt jumps, go karts, the mega ramp, food for days and pros all over the

place. I'm about to take you through camp in vivid detail and explain to you why this place, Camp Woodward, should be your dream destination in 2015. Shall we get started?

Right across the street is the other main indoor park: Lot 8. Now this is where you are going to get those park runs dialled in. Complete with a box jump, wallrides, quarter pipes, a bowl, foam pit, and resi, Lot 8 is perfect for hammering out all the manoeuvres! A lot of crazy transfers are hidden inside Lot 8, just waiting to be discovered. There are a few other indoor parks, including Egypt, The School, and The Playground. All are jam packed with their own special features for all different types of riding. Mainly keeping the transition small, these parks are great for beginners as well as fun for advanced riders. And some of the outdoor parks include Outdoor Street, Launchpad, The Cage, and the brand new: B3 Art Park. Let’s take a look inside B3 and see what the heck an art park actually consists of....Built by the man himself, Nate Wessel, B3 is in a whole new league of skateparks. There are curved rails, angled ledges, a spider lookin’ thing, and even a curb for those super long boardslides! You can see right in the middle of the park, one of the main attractions is the Keystone Ledge. With Camp Woodward being in Pennsylvania (The Keystone State), we felt it needed a little PA flavour. So Nate threw together this up-ledge in the shape of, well, the keystone.

Scootering’s own Dan Barrett came through and annihilated this ledge! So now you’ve spent the whole day checking out the parks. It’s time to see what else Camp Woodward has in store! You are going to spend most of your time at camp, outdoors. There is so much fun stuff to do for when you get a little tired of riding! Mom doesn’t let you have a paintball gun at home? Don’t worry, we have an entire paintball course on camp! Just load up the gun, pull the trigger, and nail your friends with paintballs! Right next to the paintball course, is the ropes course. This is for those who like to live on the edge, and really get their adrenaline going. You’ll get strapped in, and climb through the trees on a vigorous, physically challenging series of obstacles, all ending with a super fast zip line down to the ground! This is not only an adrenaline rush, but it really helps out with balance for those who like to hang out on rails and do long manuals! One of my personal favourite things to do at Camp Woodward, is ride the go-karts! That’s right! Wanna challenge some friends in a head to head battle? Loser buys Juleps! (Julep – noun - a sweet flavoured drink made from a sugar syrup) After the race, you can head on up to The Canteen, where you can get a julep to cool down, or maybe

munch on some pizza or candy! They got it all at The Canteen! Don’t forget, everyday between 4 and 6, right under The Canteen, there is the Ball Park Grill! Get your burgers and dogs, and dress ‘em up however you like! Camp Woodward is the place to be in the summer time. So many skateparks to choose from, many different activities, and a LOT of friendships to be made! You will never get bored at this place. Trust me, I’ve lived there for months at a time! If you want the experience of a lifetime, then you need to get your butt to Camp Woodward, and spend a week with us. Remember kids, heaven is a half-pipe! • JAKE HERSHEY
