Sports Decision AnalysisRoger Federer: Master's Master Stroke by Aabhas Pareek

In sports, it is a cliche that making the best use of form is of utmost importance. Form would not stay forever, and at the same time, some groups suggest to choose your moments wisely. The paradox is a long-lived one and has spurred debates across almost all sports.

Recently, Roger Federer after winning his 18th major title, The Aus-tralian Open, decided not to play in the French Open. The two argu-ments, which again came to the fore were that whether Roger was smart enough to bypass the French Open to focus on Wimbledon and other upcoming ATP events, or could he have banked on his regained touch to give French Open a shot.

If we were to deep dive into the paradox, there are multiple facets to it. Clay is considered the most physically demanding surface in ten-nis, requiring plenty of lateral as well as straight movement and slid-ing, along with lengthy points and matches. Federer’s absence in the 2016 season was because of back and knee problems that plagued him. It ended his impeccable streak of appearing in 65 consecutive Grand Slams. To be precise, he did not miss any grand slam post-2000 till last year. The other possible reason for his absence could be that playing just a single event on clay does not make much sense as the rest of the tournament is played on hard and synthetic courts.

Chants are going around that Federer may have skipped the French Open because before the tournament, Nadal had started to hit peak form, and there was no point losing sweat and breath against an in-form Nadal at the French Open.

The few things that were crystal clear in Federer’s approach in the Australian Open included a change in his style of play, some chang-es being subtle, while others were glaring. The backhand was more aggressive than ever. He was trying to win points on service return rather keeping the ball in play. On his comeback from a knee injury, Federer defied age and general opinion to win the Australian Open in January 2016 and followed that up with two more high-profile titles at Indian Wells and Miami. The extrapolation to that can be the real-ization by his team that he has a better chance of winning on quick surfaces and that the so-called ‘form’ is not a universal term anymore.

If we look at other professional sports such as cricket, players have skipped certain formats or series to focus on world cups and other im-portant events. It is not something new in professional sports, but it is

the unsatiated craving of fans and spectators that can’t com-prehend the tactical decision of letting go of one event for much more to come. Moreover, in hindsight, if we analyze Federer’s decision, he de-serves an ovation. He not only won his 19th grand slam title but also won a record 8th Wimbledon title. The questions were raised about his ability to compete against the best in the French Open. He bashed all of those questions and put them to rest by delivering a high class and superior performance to win his 19th grand slam title. The debate over form and choosing the right moments will go on forever. Everyone can frame arguments, but it is imperative that the decisions taken by greats such as Roger Federer are respected. Nobody knows his mental and physical state better than him, and when an individual of that calibre takes a deci-sion, it demands respect.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale scored as Real Ma-drid beat Borussia Dortmund for the first time in Ger-many (26-09-2017)

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in his 150th European club match as Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund for the first time in Ger-many. His goals wrapped up a 3-1 win after Gareth Bale had put them ahead with a superb volley in the 18th minute.

India defeated Australia convincingly in the first 3 ODIs to claim the series (24-09-2017) In 3rd ODI, India beat Australia by five wickets to take an unassail-able 3-0 lead in the five-match series. Chasing 294, India rode on a fluent opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane and then sealed the deal with Hardik Pandya’s quick-fire 78. In-dia was in a little spot after losing Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav in quick succession but Pandya operated with a mature head to get the side close to a convincing win.

Ben Stokes and Alex Hales dropped by England until further notice (28-09-2017)

Ben Stokes and Alex Hales, two of England’s leading cricketers, have been stood down from international duty indefinitely pend-ing the outcome of a police investigation into an altercation that took place during the early hours of Monday morning in Bristol.Stokes, 26, was arrested in the Clifton area of the city on Monday on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm – a 27-year-old man was left needing treatment for a facial injury in Bristol Royal In-firmary – and he was released later that day under investigation. Stokes is now due to be re-interviewed under caution by Avon and Somerset police in the first week of October.Hales, who was present at the time of the incident but not arrest-ed, is also due to be interviewed by detectives, having previously returned to Bristol on 26th morning to help with enquiries. The two team-mates had been out drinking after England’s 124-run win in their third one-day international against West Indies in the city on the 24th.

Most Popular Sports Marketing Campaigns of All Timeby Madan Mohan C

"Sport is now the only potential discipline where you can engage very high numbers of people. It still provides one of the few moments that is broadcast live where having a replay doesn’t make sense. When it comes to sport, Netflix has zero value."- Jean Pierre Diernaz, vice president marketing, Nissan Europe

In our extremely busy world where everyone is doing something or the other all the time, marketers are finding it arduous to capture the viewers’ attention even for a small amount a time. Sports is something which transcends this and holds people’s attention for hours together. This is why sports based marketing campaigns have been highly successful. The Sports Committee of IIM Shillong would like to understand this relationship between sports and marketing and present key in-sights every month. In the first edition, we start with something interesting and bring to you some of the most popular sports marketing campaigns of all time.

Nike’s “Just Do It” CampaignLaunched in 1988, the Nike “Just Do It” campaign featured professional and amateur athletes talking about their accomplishments and the emotions they feel as they exercise. One of the first television spots of the campaign featured a video of 80-year-old marathoner Walt Stack who explains to viewers how he runs 17 miles every morning. Stories like Walt’s evoked an immediate emotional response in viewers and led them to ask, “If these athletes can do it, why can’t I?” The “Just Do It” campaign was so powerful that people began to contact Nike with personal stories about how they “just did it,” whether it was quitting a dead-end job or taking up a healthier lifestyle. The rest, as they say, is history.Interesting titbit – “Just Do It” slogan was inspired by Gary Gilmore, a convicted murderer from Portland. When he was put before a firing squad and asked for his last words, he nonchalantly said, “Let’s do it.” This was modified to ‘Just Do It’ by Nike.

Adidas’s “Impossible is Nothing” CampaignAdidas, a company that started off with a core vision to support athletes, has always been true to its positioning that is highlighted by the Adidas slogan, “Impossible is Nothing.” It is one of the greatest slogans for a sports brand. It was not until 1974 that Adidas got as-sociated with the slogan, “Impossible is Nothing” that is actually taken from a quote by Muhammad Ali, one of the legendary boxers who ruled the ring.

Issue 1 | Volume 1 | Sportacus 7Erich Stamminger, member of the Executive Board of Adidas-Salomon AG, describes “Impossible is Nothing” as a brand and an attitude that is known and shared by all athletes around the world. He added, “As an athlete, you always strive to go further, break new ground, and surpass your limits. So do we as a brand, to achieve our mission to be the leading sports brand in the world.”

Samsung’s “Football Saves the Planet” CampaignThis has been one of the most innovative footballing marketing campaigns of all time. The concept is of aliens invading our Earth and the only hope for us is a football match between the aliens the best players in our planet. Samsung actually brought together some the biggest stalwarts of the footballing world such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney etc. This is touted to be one of the most expensive sporting advertisements.

Wilson’s “My Wilson” CampaignWilson Sporting Goods Co. believes there are few stronger connec-tions than the bond between an athlete and his or her equipment. The relationship a tennis player has with his racquet, a quarterback with his football, a first basewoman with her glove, or a golfer with his driver are all pure and unmatched. “My Wilson” aimed to demonstrate and celebrate the role that equipment plays in an athlete’s pursuit of excel-lence. The company created a 60-second video, called “Nothing With-out It,” which depicts amateur and professional athletes sharing their stories of success and defeat alongside Wilson equipment. Established competitors such as Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Dustin Pedroia, Kerri Walsh Jennings, Brendan Steele and Grigor Dimitrov all make cameos, along with young, aspiring athletes.

Star Sports’s “Mauka Mauka” CampaignOne campaign which was straight out-of-the-box was the Mauka Mau-ka campaign by Star Sports. The ad campaign assisted the channel to get into limelight. Immense amount of talks, comments, sentiments were flowing with its world cup theme ads. The first ad released on digital platform YouTube was on 7th February 2015. Within 12 hours of being online, the ad got more than a million organic views. The buzz went viral, not just in India, but all the way to Pakistan as well. It also had twitter campaign simultaneously running with #WontGiveItBack & #MaukaMauka. With the number of views crossing 10 million, Star India’s ‘Mauka Mauka’ had been the most-watched campaign in the first quarter of 2015 on YouTube. This campaign was carried forward to other matches and tournaments, all of them becoming equally suc-cessful.

September 1957 - Barça's New Camp.On 24 September 1957, Barcelona inaugurated the Camp Nou with a 4-2 friendly win over a Warsaw select team.Built over a period of three and half years at a cost of 288 million pesetas, the stadium's original name was Estadi del FC Barcelona, but it has been known from the beginning as Camp Nou ("New Ground") (the club officially adopted that name in 2000).For the inauguration, Barcelona hosted a crowd of over 90,000 for the friendly against the players from Warsaw. Several dignitaries attended, including the Archbishop of Barcelona, who blessed the new stadium. A choir then performed the Hallelujah chorus from Handel's Messiah. It took only eleven minutes for the home side to pull ahead, with striker Eulogio Martínez scoring the first goal. Barcelona got additional goals from Tejada, Sampedro, and Evaristo to win 4-2.Since then, the stadium's capacity has increased to over 99,000 and it has hosted European Cup and World Cup matches.

September 1885 - Even For Cricket Players, That's Pretty Bad!On 12 September 1885, Arbroath FC set a world record by beating Bon Accord FC in the first round of the Scottish Cup. The final score was 36-0.The result is explained largely by the fact that Bon Accord was not a football team, but an Aberdeen cricket team named the Orion Cricket Club! They mistakenly received a Scottish Cup invitation intended for Orion FC and chose to attend, taking the name "Bon Accord FC" for the competition. They reportedly arrived at the match without proper football kits.Arbroath, meanwhile, were an experienced side, having formed seven years earlier. They did not take long to establish their dominance, going up 15-0 by halftime. 21 goals in the second half brought the final score to 36-0, a world record at the time. John Petrie, then 18 years old, set an individual world record by scoring 13. Arbroath advanced through the Cup, eventually losing to Hibernian. The scoreline remained a world record until 2002, when Madagascar side AS Adema won a match 149-0. Arbroath's achievement re-mains a British record, though.

2007 World T20 final: MS Dhoni’s young Indian brigade pip Pakistan to lift inaugural title On September 24, 2007, a young Indian side under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni lifted the inaugural ICC World T20 in Johan-nesburg, South Africa. It was an unexpected victory as a team of youngsters sans the stalwarts gave India a taste of World glory. What made it even more special for the Indian team was that they beat their arch-rivals Pakistan in a tense final at the Wanderers.

Bayern Munich’s New CoachLess than 24 hours after a humiliating 3-0 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Carlo Ancelotti has left his role as coach of Bayern Munich, the German club confirmed in a tweet. The reigning Bundesliga champions, one of the pre-tournament favou-rites for this year's European Cup, arrived in Paris determined to prove the early season doubters wrong. But the chastening loss, coupled with Bayern's stuttering start to the domestic campaign, proved to be the final straw for a reportedly furious Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the club's executive chairman.Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann are the overwhelming favorites to take on the biggest job in German football. Both men come with formidable reputations but also significant drawbacks. Former Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel is the bookies' frontrunner, with Sport Bild's Christian Falk claiming talks have already been held between Bayern and the 44-year-old. Hoffenheim's Julian Nagelsmann has been linked with a future role at Bayern ever since his club defeated the Bundesliga champions 1-0 at home last season. He repeated the feat earlier this month with a deserved 2-0 home victory.

Thomas Tuchel Julian Nagelsmann

Inside knowledge:Bayern's only likely alternative to Nagelsmann or Tuchel, with most high-profile coaches tied to contracts, would be keeping the role in-house. Willy Sagnol has been installed as interim coach and has one game to prove himself before the international break. Although a fan favourite, the former fullback's spell as Bordeaux coach was far from a resounding success. Along with the recently appointed sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, Sagnol could form one half of a duo capable of reinstalling Bayern's proud identity, yet it would be a gamble to leave them in charge of on-field exploits. Unless, of course, Bayern's senior players, who reportedly lost confidence in Ancelotti, take on that responsibility themselves.

Issue 1 | Volume 1 | Sportacus 13Malaysian GP: Lewis Hamilton in box seat as Vettel plays catch-up in SepangAfter the high drama of Singapore, Formula One is set for another weekend of turbo-charged emotions at the Malaysian Grand Prix. As F1 bids farewell to the Sepang International Circuit after 19 seasons, Sebastian Vettel could well kiss goodbye to his 2017 title hopes if he doesn't dent Lewis Hamilton's lead soon. For much of the season it has been the Ferrari driver who has had the upper hand. The Ger-man led by 25 points after the Monaco Grand Prix in May and by 14 following victory at July's Hungarian Grand Prix but now it is Hamilton in the ascendancy following a blistering run of form.

Tiger Woods has no timetable for return but set for Presidents Cup roleHe can only hit 60-yard shots as he recovers from his latest back surgery but Tiger Woods will return to a golf course this week as an assistant captain at the Presi-dents Cup. The 14-time major champion has not played since February and un-derwent a fourth back operation in April as he tries to get his competitive career back on track. The 41-year-old, who was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in May, says he is working out six days a week but has no time frame for a return to the sport. Woods, who was out of the game for 15 months following multiple back surgeries in 2015 and 2016, says he is taking his rehabilitation slowly. "I have my six-month back X-rays coming up. Once my surgeon takes a look, he'll give me the parameters of what I can do moving forward," wrote Woods, who pulled out of his last tournament, the Dubai Desert Classic in February, with a re-currence of back spasms.
