Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we enter the second half the school term, time seems to be passing quickly. I have been fortunate enough to have a number of students demonstrate their learning to me – particularly writing. It has been excellent to see the robust conversation at the beginning of the writing session and finally the finished product – good job 5C! Well done to all of those students who have shown me their work. Keep up the good work.
Sydney/Canberra Trip
We wish all of the Yr 6 campers travelling to Sydney and Canberra all the best and hope that this trip provides an excellent learning experience. We look forward to hearing all of your travel stories when you return.
Bike Education
Bike Education for our Year 3 students starts this week at the PCYC. I will be interested in discussing the rules and regulations of bike riding with our Year 3 students when they complete the course.
Mackay Orchestras and Bands
Mackay Orchestras and Bands was held on the weekend. I would like to extend a big congratulations to both our Senior and Junior Bands. The Senior Band came away with a Bronze, missing Silver by 1 point! Our Junior Band won Silver. Thank you to Miss Brett and Miss Hueber for their hard work and dedication in relation to teaching our students.
NAPLAN
Last week our Year 3 & 5 students who engaged in the tests in May this year, received their NAPLAN reports. The reports provide students and parents a point in time look at student performance in the areas of Reading Comprehension, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy.
Safety Risk:
We have received a number of reports of dangerous driving practices that could endanger children during peak traffic periods before and after school. Parents who collect children from near the back gate of the school are reminded that students are unpredictable and that we need to vigilant when leaving this area. I’m aware that parking is at a premium, however, at this time the school has no control over this shortage. The back gate will continued to be locked as this is a designated teacher parking zone. We had a couple of near misses through this zone last week and our priority is the safety of all of our students. Options for parents include: STOP DROP GO Parking at the front of the school and behind the hall. Possibly waiting 10 mins and coming a little later to pick up your children. Carpooling

We have asked our local Police officers to regularly visit our school to help enforce safe traffic expectations in these areas before and after school.
Grandparents Day
Grandparents Day will be held on the 28th October 2016 – lock this date in your calendar! We will give more information through newsletters and notes as the date draws near. Yours in Learning,

From the Year 4’s
On Wednesday the 10th of August the year 4 students went
on an excursion to the Mackay Botanic Gardens.
While we were there, Maya, our tour guide showed us
around the Botanic Gardens and explained how lifecycles
work as well as how plants and animals rely on each other.
She taught us that the Zodiac caterpillar and moth feed on
an endangered tree, the Omphalea tree, which is only
found in three areas in the Mackay region and nowhere
else in the world. She also showed us the eggs of a small
grass yellow butterfly she had recently discovered.
When we went on a self-guided tour we were directed to go
to the lagoon where we found turtles, ducks and other
water birds. When we were finishing our self-guided tour
we discovered a tropical shade garden where we found a
hawkmoth caterpillar which Maya Harrison (our tour guide),
Carolyn Atkinson and Kate Brunner have written a book,
called The Bungee Jumping Caterpillars. Maya also taught
us that the hawkmoth caterpillar feeds on a wide range of
native and introduced plants.
When we went to the meeting room we discovered more
about lifecycles and saw pinned creatures such as moths,
butterflies, grasshoppers, bugs and beetles. We also saw
some live creatures in breathable containers for us to
observe closely.
The year 4’s had a very exciting and educational day!

Sporting News
The Athletics Carnival and Trials have been run
and won. We had a number of athletes represent
Pioneer Valley at the Mackay trials with a few students
progressing to the Capricornia trials.
For the Mackay trials we had Ryan, Harry, Connor, Toby,
Thomas, Connor, Joel, Ben, Max, Thaison, Quade, Cole,
Jake, Calvin, Noah, Nelson, Imogen, Tamea, Ella, Taylah,
Cleo McLeod, Sara, Sara, Jaydah and Baileigh-Maree
selected from the Pioneer Valley trials. That’s 25 athletes
from a squad of 69. Great effort to all concerned.
Lachlan, Ryan, Connor and Jake were all Age Champions at
the Pioneer Valley trials. Well done, People. Joel broke the
High jump record at Pioneer Valley by 2cm. Great job, Joel.
At Mackay, Connor turned the tables on Max in the 800m,
edging him out by 0.15 sec, with both of them running faster
than the Marian SS record set by Max. Connor will be going
to Cap trials along with Harry, Thomas, Ella, Imogen, Joel,
Ryan and Jake. Jake, unfortunately, is going to be kicking
around in the snow around that time, so won’t be able to
participate. We also had two or three others who came a
close fourth and just missed their chance to advance. Well
done to all athletes.
Inter–school sport will be starting this week. We’ll have four
teams, Girls and Boys in both Soccer and Touch to play St
John’s at Walkerston and Nebo here at Marian. The students
will have teams organised by now. Next week is the big trip
so there won’t be any sport and we’ll continue on 2/9/16 and
9/9/16.
Swimming this year looks like being a two week block in
weeks 6 and 7 of Term Four. This’ll give us some warmer
water. More on that as we get closer.
PLAYER PROFILE:- Cleo has been playing school Hockey
since she was 5, and has been playing Mackay School
Hockey ever since she moved to Marian in 2012. Since then
she has represented (Rep) Mackay Hockey every year.
This year Cleo was selected for girls U11 Division 1 team
again, and last weekend (6 & 7th) played against Townsville,
Rockhampton, and Gladstone. Their team was undefeated -

Pioneer Valley Netball
Competition, held this
term. They played
teams from Mirani,
Walkerston and St
John’s Catholic Primary
Schools. All those who
played gained valuable
court experience and
enjoyed the annual
competition.
Thank you to coaches, Miss Deb Pruden, Mrs Anne
Cage, and Mrs Tanja Jeffs for their time and effort to
give the opportunity for girls to experience netball,

draw with Townsville.
Earlier this year Cleo also competed with the inner
city classes, again for Mackay Division 1 Rep U13
girls team, and was picked to go to states and
compete in June at Hervey Bay. She was unable to
go to Hervey Bay due to prior commitments (camp)
and she was one of the youngest.
Cleo was also selected for extra pilot training by
Dylan Elliot who is the Regional Coaching Director
(RCD) for hockey, and Dan Mayfield who played for
Australia.
And speaking of player achievements, we also have
Connor going to the Nationals at Darwin in
September as part of the Queensland State team for
swimming and Ella competed for Capricornia in Golf
at the State Titles at Yeppoon in July. Fantastic effort
by both athletes and the best of luck to Connor at the
top level.
Ciao for now.

READING – Our School Focus:
This newsletter: Is sounding out my only way to
decode a word I don’t know?
Children as they read may come across unknown words.
(words they don’t know). Some children will stop reading at
the unknown word. Others will make a word up. As children
pause at the unknown word the usual response is “sound it
out”. As children give the incorrect word the usual
response is to tell them the correct word. In this case it is
the adult who is doing the monitoring for mistakes
(checking) and self-correcting. The aim is for the reader to
do their own monitoring and correcting, so they can
become an effective independent reader.
There are a number of reading strategies that can be, and
should be, applied for decoding unknown words.
Remember, the strategies applied can vary with the
reading development of the child.
Here are some strategies and prompts to help decode the
unknown word or correct that ‘made up’ word. In choosing
the correct prompt for children that misread words you
need to think either-
A. The mistake did not make sense, so use prompts for
meaning.
B. The mistake did make sense, so use prompts for visual
information. (look at what’s written)
1. Think about the MEANING:– What is happening in
the sentence or story?
Say for the unknown word if child pausing:
Look at the picture. (This is for beginning
readers)
Reread the sentence.
Reread the sentence, come out with the first
sound of the word (the unknown word) and read
on to the end of the sentence. Once done, say
Now reread the sentence.
What would make sense in that sentence?
Say if child has given an incorrect word that doesn’t
make sense in the sentence:
Did that make sense?
You read ______. Did that make sense? (to help
out if they don’t know to the ‘Did that make
sense?’ prompt)
2. Look for the VISUAL CLUES:
Say for the unknown word –
Look at the first letter/s. What is the first sound
of the word?
Do you see a part of the word you know?
(Chunking – reader might know the beginning/
middle/end)
Cover part of the word. ( eg. Cover the word
ending. Have reader place their finger over the
‘ed’ in the word looked.)
You’ve seen that word before in the book. (or
the word could be a sight word the reader
knows.)
Sound it out. (Only if the reader has word and
sound knowledge)
Say for the incorrectly given word if the new word
makes sense –
You said _____. Did that word look right?
You said _____. What would you expect to see
in that word?
Did that word look right?
You made a mistake in that sentence. Can you
find it? (Not for beginner readers)
Remember – If your child is finding many unknown
words or makes too many errors, then the text is
too difficult for independent reading and they may
become frustrated.
Also remember, we want the reader to understand
what they are reading, so try not to go through
more than one or two prompts for the unknown
word. If they don’t ‘get it’, give them the word and
allow the reader to continue so they don’t lose the
meaning of the story.

Latest report from Pioneer Valley Junior Golf
The Pioneer Valley Junior Golf Club would like to congratulate Marian State School students Ashton & Lily, Talen & Caden and Ella who participated in the recent Mackay Sugar Circuit held during the recent school holiday period.
The Mackay Sugar Circuit is a 4 day tournament and is played at 4 different courses within the Mackay district. I am happy to say that students Ashton and Lily played exceptionally well considering that this was not only their first competition event but they played at each of the 4 courses which is a big achievement on its own to do.
State Trials
During week 2 of this term, Ella was successful in being selected to play for the Capricorn Golf Team at the recent State Trials held at Capricorn resort golf club over a 4 day tournament in the 10-12years girls division. This was a huge tournament for Ella and she played very well despite the conditions. Day 1 was cancelled due to all the rain the region received over the weekend. On days 2 & 3 Ella had to play 18 holes instead of the 9 holes she is use to but despite that she still played well and kept a positive attitude. Day 4 (last day) Ella only had to play 9 holes and she improved her score considerably, maybe because the course was only starting to dry out by then!
Ella has told me that this was a great experience for her and she is going to try extra hard to get into the team again next year.
Keep Active, Ben
