Buddy Miles1947-2008

IllinoisBlues.comIllinoisBlues.com is saddened by the

passing of drum legend Buddy Miles. He will be missed!

Buddy Miles 9/5/1947 – 2/26/2008Legendary Drummer Buddy Miles

passed away this Tuesday, peaceful-ly at his home in Austin, TX. He was (60) sixty years old. He suffered from congestive heart failure but the offi-cial cause of death is not known.Buddy performed with some of the

greatest names in music including Stevie Wonder, Muddy Waters, Mi-chael Bloomfield, Wilson Pickett, Ste-phen Stills, Neil Young, David Cros-by, Jack Bruce, Eric Burden, Peter Torque, Billy Gibbons, Prince, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimmy Vaughan, Rick James, Kool and the Gang, Jr. Brown, Ike Turner, Pinetop Perkins, Jr. Wells, Koko Taylor, Johnny Taylor, Barry White, Aretha Franklin, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Carlos San-tana, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Billy Cox, David Bowie and others. Buddy Miles recorded over 70 al-

bums and performed in numerous world tours, television commercials and videos. He is best known for his work with Jimi Hendrix and bass player Billy Cox in Band of Gypsys. Band of Gypsys recorded one album

appropriately titled “Band of Gypsys” in 1970 at Fillmore East in New York. Two of the songs on the album were written by Miles. (“We Gotta Live To-gether” and “Changes”).In lieu of flowers; the family has

asked to please make donations to the Jazz Foundation of America spe-cifically in Buddy Miles’ name to as-sist with funeral, and other expens-es at jazzfoundation.org ; The Jazz Foundation of America, at 322 West 48th Street, New York, NY, 10036, Attn.: Amy Cusma.

Legendary Toronto blues guitar-ist and old-style jazz aficionado Jeff Healey died Sunday in Toronto’s St. Joseph’s Hospital after a lifelong bat-tle with a rare form of cancer — reti-noblastoma — that blinded him in his first year. He was 41.“Discovered” in a Toronto club in

1982 by Texas blues guitarist, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, Healey aston-ished music fans with his outrageous technique. Self-taught by age 4, he laid the electric guitar across his lap and played it in much the same way as a pianist manipulates a keyboard.Though he specialized in blues-

based rock and sold more than a mil-lion copies of his Grammy-nominated 1988 debut album See the Light — released after a cameo performance in the Hollywood movie Road House with Patrick Swayze — Healey’s real passion was vintage American jazz.Healey hosted a long-running CBC

Radio series, My Kinda Jazz, before moving the program to Toronto’s Jazz-FM station, relying solely on his personal collection of 35,000 rare and obscure 78 rpm recordings and an encyclopedic knowledge of the music and personalities he featured in the show.Healey also played trumpet and clar-

inet, and in the past decade recorded three albums of vintage jazz with Jeff Healey’s Jazz Wizards, including It’s Tight Like That.Healey was an internationally known

star who shared stages with B.B. King and Vaughan, and recorded with George Harrison, Mark Knopfler and blues legend Jimmy Rogers. At the time of his death Healey was

planning to release his first rock/blues album in eight years, Mess of Blues, recorded in studios in Toronto, in concert in London, England, and at the popular Entertainment District club that bore his name, Jeff Healey’s Roadhouse.

Mike Morgan and The Crawl Stronger Every Day - Ruf Re-cordsRelease Date – March 18, 2008

It Crawls

You may remember Mike Morgan as the Texas guitar player with the leather eye patch (and dyed hair). He’s been around since the early ‘90’s working with different vo-calists over the years and finally picking up his own singing around 2000. That’s not the beef I have with this album. Everyone’s sing-ing is fine. The CD is boring. I kept waiting for the tunes to go somewhere and they never did. The lyrics had so many cliché’s that I thought of blues tunes I wasn’t hearing instead of the one I was hearing. The guitar playing was competent, but uninspiring. It was all just kind of flat, banal and trite. It’s a nice package from Ruf Records and the production is fine. But this CD never gets up to its feet and Mike Morgan’s reputation.—John Heim (A.K.A. “Big Mo”)

2008 Challenge raisesBlues ‘N’ Buffett Chili Challenge a HUGE Success!

Jamie and Sue Gorecki

The Linn County Blues So-ciety (LCBS) and the Isle of Iowa Parrot Head Club

(IIPHC) raised $5800.00 for char-ity at their eighth annual Blues ‘n’ Buffett Chili Challenge. The event was held on Sunday, February 24, at the Best Western Longbranch Hotel and Convention Center. The Blues ‘n’ Buffett Chili Challenge is a friendly competition between the two clubs to raise money for charity. Proceeds from the event were presented to H.D. Youth Cen-ter and The Boys and Girls Club of Cedar Rapids. This year’s pro-ceeds pushed the 8 year event over the $25,000 mark in raising money for local charities.

Since 2001, members of the two clubs have challenged one another with their finest chili recipes and colorful decorations and costumes. This year, twenty six members pre-pared their favorite chili recipes to share with the public. In addition to raising money for charity, the challengers competed for various prizes awarded to the clubs and to individuals. A panel of local ce-lebrity judges and people attending the event voted the following as winners:

Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn. They teach you there’s a bound-ary line to music. But, man, there’s no boundary line to art.
