My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life

Arista/Nashville Dir./Nat’l Promotion Lesly Tyson discusses her most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. Rolling Stones, Steel Wheels Tour, Birmingham’s Legion Field: I was in high school and this was my first Stones show. My eyes were opened in a whole new way. 2. Coldplay, Rush of Blood To The Head: This is one of my all-time favorite albums,

my first album launch in promotion, and one of the best tours I have worked. It was very tough working these songs at pop radio because so many people didn’t “get” them. Seeing their success now is incredible. 3. George Strait, Alamodome, 1997: I had never before or have since heard a sound like when the lights went down and the crowd started screaming. It was my first George show, and I could actually feel the crowd from the side of the stage. I will never forget it. 4. Brad Paisley/Mud On The Tires: My first No. 1 record in Country. All No. 1 records are special, but your first is unforgettable. 5. Frank Sinatra/Please Be Kind: It was the first song Ben and I danced to at our wedding reception. It truly was the most wonderful night of my life. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Lil Wayne, The Carter III. •An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Phish!•An album you played or listened to incessantly: I had the vinyl of Michael Jackson’s Thriller and listened to it on my turntable (front and back) every day after school. I listened to Tim McGraw’s Everywhere on repeat for a year. That tour was the beginning of my career and a turning point in my life. One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Djobi, Djoba” by the Gipsy Kings. You cannot help but be put in an instant good mood by this band. When you need to feel like you are on vacation, play this one.

Lesly Tyson

worldwide.” And she adds, “Charlie Cook’s creativity and passion for Country radio and Country music have helped to generate success for many radio stations and organizations in our industry, such as the CRB, CMA and the ACM.” That evening, Bill Bailey, Laurie DeYoung and Rudy Fernandez will be inducted into the Country Music DJ Hall of Fame, in addition to Dan Halyburton, Michael Hammond and the late Cy Blumenthal entering the Country Music Radio Hall of Fame. Purchase tickets for $90 with CRS registration and $100 for all others at www.crb.org or by calling 615-327-4487.

Radio News• KCYY/San Antonio morning teamers Kris Winston and Alyce Ian aired their last show Dec. 31 after a decade with the station. Parttimer Jay Quintero is covering the airshift. A replacement is expected to be named later this week. • Former KSWF/Springfield, MO AM driver AJ Maguire joined WBTU/Ft. Wayne, IN for PM drive last Tuesday (12/29/09). He replaces Kenny Bosselman, who exited last Monday (12/28/09). • KEZE/Spokane swapped frequencies and call letters with sister AAA KXLY last week (1/1). Coyote Country KXLY can now be heard on 99.9. The station’s contacts and mailing address remain the same. • Kaleidoscope Media’s Shelly Mullins has been named Marketing Dir. for Cumulus/Nashville’s five-stations cluster, which includes Country WSM-FM. Concurrently, Jane Crossman transitions into a fulltime Webmaster post. Mullins can be reached at 615-312-3529 or at [email protected].• Connoisseur Media’s Classic Rock KRKX/Billings, MT flipped to Country Jan. 1. The new K-Sky kicked off with 10,000 songs in a row, as the airstaff is still being put in place. Jack Seymour is the station’s PD and will most likely cover afternoons. He is also accepting airchecks and resumes at [email protected] or via snail mail at 2075 Central Ave., Billings, MT 59102. • Country KJCS/Lufkin-Nacogdoches, TX has been off the air since Dec. 7, when owner Bill Vance applied to the FCC to go dark, apparently following a dispute with former LMA operator and local cluster owner Yates Media.

Ratings Reminder Stations participating in the Winter ‘10 Arbitron need to complete and return their Station Name Preview packet to ensure their own station names are being recorded properly and to review information of other stations to identify those which may not be using their identifier according to guidelines. Although name changes will be accepted through March 31, information only becomes effective when Arbitron receives it.

What’s Up, Doc? When WWKA/Orlando morning co-host Doc (l) spotted former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie in the next box at the Capitol One Bowl New Year’s Day, he was determined to get an autograph. Doc got past security by flashing his business card and Flutie, who is actually a Doc & Grace show listener, graciously posed for his only pic from the evening.

It’s been tough going the past four days. But when I get down, I just think about the kids at Monroe Harding, and all the kids like them around the country who may really be facing homelessness once they
