COMBINED ARTS

CUTTINGS FROM FLORAL ART AND GARDENING

We were all delighted at the increased number of members ‘having a go’ at the competitions at the Royal Cornwall Show. Congratulations to Pam Selley of Bodmin Gaolbirds WI for winning the Pat Ward Novice Cup. Other members who attended the previous Beginners’ Flower Arranging sessions did well too and we are hoping that following the recent classes, more of you will feel more confident!

Our very own Edna Trudgeon, joint winner of the Kitson Cup at Boconnoc, awarded for most points gained in Floral Art Section, will run a workshop in March sharing hints and tips and giving practical advice. She will have with her the schedules for the various shows round the County, so you can ‘have a go’ and get some practice. Further details later.

More congratulations to Janet Pugh, of Lanreath WI who won the Margaret Shepherd Cup also at Boconnoc.

We are a fun team and have much enjoyed planning our various events. Thank you for all your feedback and suggestions.

All we need now is someone from the east of the County to join us and share her local knowledge. Do get in touch with me if you might be interested.

Abigail Kirby-Harris.

CHRISTMAS WREATHS Friday 25th November10.30 -3.30

Watch one of the Nursery team create a Christmas wreath, using predominantly natural materials. Choose your own materials to make your own garland, with supervision from the Nursery instructor, hopefully picking up helpful hints and tips. Of course, you will be able to take home your creation. Additional items will be on sale for you to make others at home.

The morning session will start

with coffee at 9.30am and conclude with lunch which is included in the price. The afternoon session will commence with coffee at 2pm before the workshop starts at 2.30pm.

All participants are eligible for a 10% discount on other purchases. Bring own gloves, if required and secateurs if possible.

Cost £25 to include lunch and all materials

Closing Date: Thursday 13th October

JERSEY FEDERATION HOLIDAY 2017

‘SPRINGTIME IN JERSEY’

What could be nicer than Springtime in Jersey? Our holiday runs from Saturday May 6th until Saturday May 13th and will include the emotional and uplifting Liberation Day commemoration and celebration on the 9th May. Friends and family are welcome to join this holiday.

This lovely island has so much to offer, so come and enjoy our beautiful beaches, wonderful countryside and excellent cuisine. Marvel at our award winning orchids and visit our unique ‘Glass Church’, just two of the many delights in store for you.

Revel in an atmosphere which is truly relaxing as Jersey is an island where the historical and the modern exist in harmony. In addition, for a number of years the island has hosted an International Liberation Music Festival featuring everything from the classics to jazz.

Guests will stay at the Hotel Ambassadeur on our lovely south coast.

The cost is £470.00 p.p. half board and will include all listed, escorted tours over several days and also airport/hotel transfers. The cost does not cover travel expenses to and from the island.

This is a very busy and interesting holiday with a varied programme, which includes a considerable amount of walking and standing. Sensible shoes are a must.

All the above comes with the hands on hospitality of the WI.

For more details and information, please telephone Anne Pasturel.

CAN YOU HELP?

As a volunteer at Helston Museum, the curator showed me the 1972 WI pattern for a Guernsey. As a result, I decided to knit it and as it was in 5ply on size 13 needles, knitted in the round. It took rather a long time and is now on display in the museum, with orders for more.

I am really interested in knowing

the history of Guernseys and would like to contact others who also knit these, or Ganseys or those who knit frocks. Also, anyone interested in the history of their local harbour’s patterns.

It would be lovely if you could contact Jill Blunn. Thank you.

A SPECIAL BIRTHDAY FORPENPOL AND POINT WI

We celebrated our 40th birthday on 9th May. Four of our founder members, as well as Federation Chairman, Barbara Corbett and our link delegate, Mary Dunstan, joined us to enjoy the fun and food. President Esther, started the party with some facts and figures about 1976.

Members had supplied photos of themselves in 1976 and we each tried to match the

young things in the photos with the more mature ladies whom we now all know! Then we all tucked into a delicious traditional English tea complete with beautiful cake which Barbara and Esther cut accompanied by a resounding rendition of Happy Birthday.

The photo shows Barbara and Esther cutting the cake and the second one shows founder members Jan Reid, Bridget Kingston, Ida Parkin and Iris Crocker.

Madron WI do not normally hold a meeting in August, but when the committee were discussing how to raise some money for Denman, it was decided to hold an afternoon tea party with stalls inviting neighbouring WIs and the public in Madron. This would give us an opportunity to repay any outstanding hospitality, to meet any new people in the village and have a little social time.

We have recently invested in a banner and members used

their hanging braskets to real effect. (This is the WI Sustainable Gardening Competition 2016.)

The entrance to the hall welcomed many friends and neighbours. Inside, the well-stocked raffle raised money for Denman College. The stalls sold lots of cakes, produce, crafts and gifts. There was a talk by visiting historian Barbara Santi about the nearby Trengwainton Gardens and a cream tea was enjoyed by all.

AN AUGUST DAY WITH A DIFFERENCE

When it was suggested at Trevena-Tintagel WI last November to run a Christmas Shop in August, we thought it was a good idea, but running a Christmas Shop on what must have been two of the hottest days of the year was not. Getting Turkey in August was difficult to say the least and when we were putting up Christmas trees and decorations it all seemed a silly idea.

However, we had decorations, trees, reindeer, a roast turkey lunch with Christmas Pudding to follow, mince pies and Christmas cake as well as cakes to sell and Christmas gifts. I mustn’t forget to mention two of Father Christmas’ elves. All in all, it was a very successful venture which everybody enjoyed, with many comments of ‘What a lovely idea’, ‘We do one in July’ and ‘Happy Christmas’.(Photo courtesy of David Flower)
