Gulf Stations Fight Spill & Perception The Deepwater Horizon tragedy and ongoing oil spill continues to dominate national news, and it’s certainly the center of conversation in communities on the sandy front lines. Country Aircheck surveyed stations across the Gulf Coast, where even the specter of fouled beaches is a potential catastrophe.

“It’s all anybody’s talking about,” says WYCT/Pensacola PD Kevin King. “The feeling is akin to waiting on the world’s slowest hurricane to get here. There’s a feeling of dread and nobody knows what to do about it. Everybody is ready to do something, we just don’t know what. The oil hasn’t reached us yet.” King says the weather has been very

favorable, but that when the winds turn, the scent is in the air. “It smells like opening a new plastic shower curtain,” he says. “It’s a really bad burnt rubber smell.” WKSJ/Mobile PD Bill Black paints a bleak picture: “The fear of oil on our pristine beaches has cost our hotel, condo and restaurant owners millions of dollars already. Charter fishing fleets sit in marinas, unable to book charters for their busiest time of the year.” The station hasn’t felt a direct impact ... yet. “It’s only a matter of time before the loss of revenue on our coastline will effect some advertising dollars,” Black says.

Assessing Throwdown’s Stumbles Two weeks ago, these pages offered a radio-eye view of the just-launched Country Throwdown Tour. On Friday, tour organizers cancelled four major market shows as ticket sales lagged. Country Aircheck asked programmers in those cities (Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, San Diego) for their view of what went wrong, then reached out to tour founder Kevin Lyman. Facing a frank assessment from our programmers, Lyman doesn’t hesitate: “They’re probably pretty correct, to be honest,” he says.

KKBQ/Houston OM/PD Johnny Chiang reports being “disappointed, but not surprised” about the cancellation. “Certainly competition for the country concert dollar in Houston had something to do with slow ticket sales,” he says, citing a strong performance slate. The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo has hosted Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts and Brooks & Dunn. Taylor Swift held two shows last week. Clay Walker and Brad Paisley have announced upcoming stops. And then there’s the station’s own A Day in the Country with Miranda Lambert, Joe Nichols, Steel Magnolia, Sarah Buxton, The Band Perry and Trailer Choir. “Throwdown was priced way too expensive,” Chiang says. “It costs as little as $16 to get into any of the rodeo concerts, $10 for A Day in the Country (which is very similar to Throwdown and held at the exact same venue) and the most expensive seats at Taylor Swift were around $70. The venue even announced A Day In The Country and Throwdown in the exact same press release. One event was for $10, the other $80.” KMLE/Phoenix APD/MD Drew Bland says the competition issues also apply in his town. “We just had Brooks & Dunn’s Last Rodeo and this week it’s Tim McGraw and Lady A. I’m not sure where the disconnect was with Throwdown. We are a Country Thunder market, so the novelty of a country music festival may have been lost on our crowd.” Same story in Dallas as KPLX (The Wolf) PD Mark Phillips reports the market is coming off an attendance mark-setting Brooks & Dunn date and looking at a June 12 McGraw stop. “Those are two ‘must see’ shows if you’re a country fan,” Phillips says. “I love the idea of the Country Throwdown Tour, but having it scheduled on a Thursday night (6/10) and sandwiched between these other two major concerts made it a very tough sell.” “This didn’t feel like a good fit from the beginning,” says one PD, who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s an all-day festival show on a weekday. That might work for the alternative crowd, but for a country audience – they have jobs. Had it been scheduled on a Saturday, I’m not sure we’d have been in this situation.” Another PD, who asked not to be named, says, “I think they needed a slam-dunk headliner to get people to the event the first

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life

WPCV/Lakeland OM Mike James discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. The Beatles/A Hard Day’s Night: As a kid growing up in the ‘60s, I listened to Top 40 and the Beatles ruled the airwaves! When the movie A Hard Day’s Night came out, we all rushed over to the theater to see it. Lots of great memories and great music from the Fab Four.

2. Aerosmith/Walk This Way: I was in a fraternity in college (I’m pretty sure they based the movie Animal House on our frat house) and we played “Walk This Way” at full volume almost every night. Every song on the Toys In The Attic album is fantastic.3. Hank Williams, Jr./Family Tradition: My introduction to country music came with my first radio job in 1980, at a small AM Country daytimer in South Daytona, FL. This was one of the first songs I ever played as a radio jock and I’ve been a Hank, Jr. fan ever since.4. George Strait/Amarillo By Morning: Nobody does it better than King George, and this song is a true country masterpiece. George’s vocals are impeccable as always, and lyrically, the song is powerful. I’m glad George is still makin’ No. 1 hits, and I’m also glad that I’m still working in Country radio!5. Garth Brooks at the Orlando Arena: In the early ‘90s, Garth did a three-night concert run and I was lucky enough to see each show. Garth is a genius when it comes to entertaining a live audience, and he found a way to combine a full-blown rock concert with a very intimate country music experience.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Alice In Chains. I know they got started during the grunge rock era, but I don’t think I’ve ever listened to any of their music. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: I have a pretty eclectic music collection, but free-form jazz is a little too random for me.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Who’s Next by the Who. From start to finish, one of the best albums ever created in the rock genre.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Ice Cream” by Sarah McLachlan. It’s one of the coolest songs ever.

year and let them see the magnitude of it. Montgomery Gentry is a little soft when you can see Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, Toby Keith or Brad Paisley. Most people translate shows as, ‘the Tim concert,’ ‘the B&D concert,’ etc. The ‘Montgomery Gentry concert’ isn’t as sexy. “Plus, artists like Jack Ingram and Eli Young Band can be seen around here at a much lower price point. So there were multiple factors working against them in this model. On paper it’s a great idea. I hope they’re able to build on this and make it bigger and better next year.” Lyman says that’s exactly the intent, and doesn’t shy from the tough questions. “We talked about other artists doing this,” he admits. “We worked for months on it and tried for some other artists, but it took somebody like Montgomery Gentry to step up and do this with us. And to be honest, I don’t think we could have met a better bunch to work with. As I’ve said repeatedly to the artists on this tour, the guys who stuck with me on the Warped Tour 16 years ago are the ones who will always have a home. It’s a partnership. He acknowledges he should have been much more intimately involved on routing, locations and pricing. “Houston was a poor location; it was an expensive venue. And they were basing price on my heavy metal tour. I just found out last week we were two days before Tim McGraw in Dallas. I don’t know that I would have routed us through Charlotte during NASCAR week. I wouldn’t have started the tour in Florida, which is a market you’d really like to have some momentum going into. But we learn. I’ll be much more cognizant of those things next year.” A growing knowledge base, expanding Rolodex and an experienced fanbase are all pluses as Country Throwdown moves forward. “The last couple of weekends, the crowds have been coming earlier,” Lyman says. “We played Gilford, NH on Memorial Day and it was a sold-out show. Now, it wasn’t the largest venue we’ll play, but it is probably our highest gross. We’re still going to play for about 200,000 people this year. They’ll be able to talk about the tour and we’ll have them as a database for next year. “As for the weekday shows, part of that is us trying to extend the schedule for the artists who may already have weekend dates.

And I still believe it can work. When you have 2,000 people in the door before 3pm and you can expose them to Jonathan Singleton, that’s a good thing. The fan feedback is great and the sponsors we do have are loving it. We’re even getting visits from potential future sponsors. “It’s been the hardest couple of weeks I’ve had in many years, but the artists stepped up and the crew stepped up. Everyone is pulling together and getting it done. We’ve learned a lot and everyone has really been helpful. Even the nay-sayers are asking about next year. Hey, as long as I’m walking, we’ll be doing this again.”

Jimmy Wayne Update Twitter rescued Jimmy Wayne from a sticky situation outside Socorro, NM last week. Less than 400 miles away from his Meet Me Halfway Phoenix destination, Wayne was walking alone along Highway 60 when he was startled by man driving a silent-running hybrid vehicle who asked if he could walk with Wayne. “I asked if I could get a picture with him for our updates before we started walking and he said, ‘No,’” Wayne told us

Stations Fight Spill (continued from page 1) “’KSJ does not depend heavily on a beach trade, but there are a few major sponsors, real estate companies and family amusement parks that could cut back.” “Fortunately, the Alabama beaches have seen no oil,” he continues. “That’s the message we wish to convey. Plans are in the works now for a public service campaign from all Clear Channel stations in the region to promote that, in many areas, ‘the Coast is Clear.’ We want to tell the full story of affected and, most importantly for communities that depend on the economic impact of tourist dollars, unaffected areas along the coast.” To the west, KXKC/Lafayette, LA PD Ray Robicheaux says the impact on local shrimpers and fisherman, as well as the oyster business, are top worries. “But the biggest concern,” he says, “is what happens if a hurricane comes.”

In terms of direct revenue, WZKX/Gulfport-Biloxi, MS OM Bryan Rhodes says, “We’re feeling little effect. In fact, business is up from what it was with all the lawyers that are advertising to protect us from the oil companies and the oil company itself placing ads to let us know they’re doing everything possible.

“Tourism is off the past few weekends with people being scared off about oil on our beaches, which hasn’t happened yet,” Rhodes says. “There’s all kinds of talk on the streets about how this will affect the area when the full impact is realized. The timing could not have been worse. We were starting to see a few rays of light as the recession seems to be coming to an end. Now this. We’re going through uncharted territory and no one knows what to expect.” In Panama City, FL, WPAP PD Todd Berry says the mood is “cautious but hopeful. Luckily, the weather has been on our side. The beaches are open for business. And it’s my understanding that BP has bought a schedule of ads across the Gulf Coast stating their commitment to cleaning this up and getting it under control. “Our number one message is the beaches are clean and the water is clear. Our hearts are with our friends in Louisiana, but the way the news media are portraying it sounds like the entire gulf is suffering ill effects, and that’s simply not true. If the traffic issues we had over the long weekend say anything, tourism is just fine.” Back in Pensacola, King has Cat Country getting hourly updates from News sister WNRP-AM. “BP never spent this much money before, I can tell you that,” he says. “We’re getting law firm business. Florida tourism is running spots to get the word out that our beaches are beautiful and the fishing is fine. “We know lives aren’t threatened, but livelihoods are and that’s still stressful.” If and when the oil does come, King says there won’t be much doubt. “Our sand is totally white, so it will be quite a contrast.” CAC
