Issue 25 April 2013 HEADITORIAL Dear Parents and Students, A new book by Alison Wolf -’The XX Factor: How Working Women Are Creating a New Society’ - published this week, sets out to explore the impact on society of female achievement in the work place. Professor Wolf argues that, although being female is no longer a block to achievement, and although some women are now building a career as successful as that of their male counterparts, the profile of working women in the twenty first century comprises two very separate groups: one of around 15-20 per cent for whom work is a major source of their identity, self-esteem and pleasure, the other 85 per cent may find camaraderie and satisfaction in work but principally it is a means to pay the bills and family remains the centre of their lives. Her research is very interesting and it certainly throws down a gauntlet for those whose role it is to prepare young women for adult life. Yet equally complex is the notion of ‘work’ itself. Wolf’s study focuses on paid employment but at the East Sussex Women of the Year lunch this week I was privileged to meet many women who work long hours – often at the expense of their own family life - in the voluntary and charity sectors and whose contribution to society is immeasurable. If we consider, too, the work done by women who raise children and sustain homes or who care for elderly parents or for sick family members, then the task of preparing girls for ‘the world of work,’ now and in the future, is clearly very challenging indeed. We need to move beyond careers lessons and information-giving to encouraging the development of a wide range of skills, chief of which must surely be flexibility and resilience. As ever, I would be keen to receive any suggestions from girls or parents about how we can improve our ‘work related learning’ curriculum at BHHS. I would also be delighted to hear from any parent who would be willing to talk to girls about their own experiences of the world of work. Have a good weekend. HEADITORIALDear Parents and Students,

A new book by Alison Wolf -’The XX Factor: How Working Women Are Creating a New Society’ - published this week, sets out to explore the impact on society of female achievement in the work place. Her research is very interesting and it certainly throws down a gauntlet for those whose

role it is to prepare young women for adult life. I would also be delighted to hear from any parent who would be willing to talk to girls about their own experiences of the world of work.Have a good weekend.

UNIFORM NEWSJust a reminder that from September, all girls will be expected to wear the new uniform only. There will be further collections of old uniform at the end of term and during the holidays, so we can send another shipment off to Bungwanyi primary School in Uganda, where it has really been appreciated. The old uniform, such as green skirts, tunics and old style blouses, may no longer be worn.

Culture Vultures There was a very pleasing turnout for the latest meeting of Culture Vultures. Mr Sherwood talked about ‘Representations of Joan of Arc’, demonstrating how Joan of Arc can be made to stand for many opposing things, such as being monarchist or revolutionary, or religious - there is even a film from Nazi Germany which likens her to Hitler. The next Culture Vultures will be the last of the academic year, and will be on Tuesday 18th June. “Cookery Showdown”

Y5 TASTER DAYY5 had an exciting taster day at the senior school on Tuesday. Each class did Drama with Mrs Schilt and Chemistry with Mr Marsh. The Chemistry involved Y5 heating three tubes of different coloured powders. One changed colour permanently, one could be forced into reverse and the third one reversed all on its own! Then, they all did flame tests and found out that copper substances gave a green flame, lithium gave a scarlet flame and sodium a yellow one. Mr Marsh then proceeded to show a “bigger” version of them, using his flame thrower bottles. The bench caught fire several times! Finally, the Queen was given a makeover by reacting copper coins that had her face on them with concentrated acid. The colours we got were glorious and Her Royal Highness did look good!In Drama, the girls did “mystery boxes” and were enthusiastically showcasing their acting abilities, with a wide variety of expressive performances evident. We hope all of the girls enjoyed themselves!

Mrs Schilt & Mr Marsh

Music NewsI would like to offer congratulations to Yassi Vaziri in year 13 who has made it through to the area finals of a brand new nationwide singing competition for teens and pre-teens called Teenstar. Yassi made it through the regional finals of the competition during Easter and will now be performing at the Portsmouth guild hall for the area finals on 18th May where she will be singing another original song. If she is successful in this next stage she will be through to the grand final within London’s O2 arena! If you would like to support her in this competition, email her on [email protected] for tickets.

Louissa Denney also demonstrated her outstanding vocal skills and was the ‘star of the show’ in a concert, organised by the local ‘Springboard’ festival, that took place last Sunday at St Luke’s Church in Brighton. She was asked to perform as a result of her outstanding performances in the vocal section of last month’s Springboard Festival where she was awarded the Adjudicators Prize for best singer in the whole festival. Our ‘Instrumental Concert’ will take place in the school hall at 19:30 on Thursday 9th May. This will feature performances from all of our instrumental ensembles as well as the school orchestra who will be performing Mozart’s Symphony No 40. The girls will very much appreciate your support and tickets priced £6 and £4 will be available on the door. If you are involved in orchestra, flute group, clarinet group, jazz band or any of our rock bands you will be involved so it is very important that you attend all rehearsals prior to the concert.

GERMAN EXCHANGEThis year there are over 50 German girls who would like to take part in the exchange. I am currently looking for families who would be willing to accommodate a German girl aged 14-15 as a paying guest from 30th June to 8th July. There would of course be no obligation to visit Germany on the return leg of the exchange. Please contact me as soon as possible for further details if you might be able to help.

Greener Way to school month is almost here!May is our annual “Greener Way to school month”. Starting on 1st May we hope as many families as possible will come to school in a “greener” way. So please walk, cycle, scooter, roller-blade, car-share or get pubic transport to school if you can! Those who take part will earn points for their class. Who will be the champions this year??!

HEADITORIAL

Dear ParentsWe are busy getting ready for our Open Event on Saturday and hopefully we will have a positive response to our “crafty” event. We are very flexible on numbers so if you do know of anybody who might be interested but have not replied they are very welcome just to turn up on Saturday and join in the fun! We also hope to see many of you on the route of the Children’s Parade next Saturday (4th May). We are number 56 in the parade but hopefully you will hear us coming as our samba band plays with great gusto!Best Wishes

Eco NewsA huge thank you to everyone who brought their ‘Phil’ the bags in, we had a fantastic response. I am waiting to find out the total weight of all the clothes brought in, I will keep you posted. These textiles will be sold on and distributed to people who can use and enjoy them in developing countries, which at the same time saves our environment from the burden of further resources going to landfill. This in turn creates jobs for people in those countries who sell the clothes at markets, therefore also supporting the economy.

Are you looking to sell used “new” uniform? We are trying to establish how many people will be hoping to sell the new uniform at the end of the Summer Term. We will then try and come up with a solution with the PA. If you would like to sell uniform please make yourself known to the office so that we can establish whether a sale will be viable.

Head Lice Checks Nits have been reported in school again in two different year groups. Could we please remind and encourage parents to check their daughter’s hair for nits and lice EVERY week.

GDST Short Film Competition

Huge congratulations to all the students who took part in this demanding but exciting competition. Our BHHS winners were invited up to London for a special red carpet screening of the fabulous films from across the Trust. In spite of this tough competition every one of our three teams came away with an award – we are so proud. Their creativity and brilliance was singled out by Helen Fraser, Chief Executive Office of the GDST

Mrs Ashdown & Mr Whiteside

I just wanted to say that Brighton and Hove really dominated the event this afternoon with two highly commended and one winner in three different categories. The films themselves were stunning, and gave an absolute sense of your school as a creative powerhouse. We all thought 'wow!'. A love of Pie, A normal day on the bus, and It's the Doorbell - all fantastic. Please congratulate your girls from the chairman and from me.

Helen Fraser

Congratulations to Isobel Parr and Iona Scott, who with their video “A love of pie” came second in their category with a highly commended. Their piece was described by Helen Fraser at Trust as “Stunning, and gave an absolute sense of your school as a creative powerhouse.” Well done girls for your fantastic work and a great video!

Congratulations

On Wednesday at an exclusive screening in Soho, London; A group of year 8 girls from Brighton and Hove High School were the winners of the year 7-9 category in the Girls’ Day School Trust’s short film competition, with their film A Normal Day on the Bus which was inspired by the films of Charlie Chaplin. Groups from the junior school and year 10 were also highly commended in their categories.

The competition is one of a series of activities to mark the GDST’s 140th Anniversary this year.

Jen Smith, Head of BHHS, said: “Many congratulations to all of the girls ! I am thrilled that they did so well in this competition. The event has really helped to encourage our pupils to learn new skills and stimulate their creative thinking!

“It’s a sad fact that women make up only 19% of writers of British films released in the UK, and only 15% of directors. This competition has also helped to open our girls’ eyes to exciting new career paths and introduced them to seven new inspiring role models”

We were inspired by Charlie Chaplin, The kid and the dictator and the Oscar winning, The Artist. It was real group effort but Molly and Madsie especially came up with the love story and Rosanna came up with the Black and White silent movie idea.

The filming was a very tedious 2 hours on the bus as it was very hard to film on a moving bus. Plus one of our team had just came out of hospital so was a bit ill. After Sheena Morjaria announced that we won!!! Rosanna punched the air and we all screamed very loudly whilst Madsie and Jessye just cried.

We are so proud to have represented our school in this amazing event which Brighton and Hove High School took a prize for every single category!!

I had the biggest butterflies I’ve ever had and when I found out we had won, I was overcome with joy!(then was plain embarrassment about my moustache) Madsie“I really enjoyed this experience as I have a love for acting and films. This is a great start for a career!” RosannaWhen they announced our names, it was a big shock for everyone, and I can’t wait for the next competition! (Hopefully there is another one coming soon!)” Holly

And a special thank you to Ms Boyes and Mrs Manning for giving up their time for us!And thanks to Brighton and Hove Buses for the wonderful landscapes!!!!
