DIARY Principal’s Message

We welcome our new Assistant Principal to GK It is with pleasure that I announce that Karen ter Haar will be joining Glen Katherine PS as my

Assistant Principal in 2016. After a rigorous recruitment process, Karen was accepting of the role

and is ready join the leadership team with a heavy curriculum and assessment focus. Karen is

currently at Epping Views PS where she has been leading many programs and initiatives. We feel

very fortunate to gain the expertise and passion Karen exudes and I feel very confident that 2016

will be enriched by her presence. I look forward to formally introducing Karen to you when we

begin in 2016.

2016 Planning and Structures Last night School Council met for what was our second last meeting for 2015. Our agenda was

primarily focused on staffing, class structures and booklist/curriculum contributions for 2016.

There is much still to plan and confirm, all of which will be shared with you in early December.

What I can say at the moment is we seem to be growing in student numbers at a rapid pace. Our

current 2015 enrolment is 552 students. We are looking at having 567 students next year, 84 of

which are Prep, increasing to four prep classes in 2016 and 24 classrooms in total. While this

exciting for our community, it does bring a raft of planning needs to sort through. Keep an eye out

in future Linkletters for an update in whole school planning and staffing.

Fern Gully Lodge fun for our Grade 2’s

Monday our Grade 2 students were treated to a fun packed

adventure day at the Fern Gully Lodge in Healesville. As part

of our whole school camping program, the Grade 2 students

attend a day camp to show them what they can expect when

they head away for their first camping adventure in Grade 3.

Helen Cleary and the rest of the Grade 2 teachers organised

a very successful day that challenged our students physical

and mental strength. Many personal goals were achieved with

some students overcoming fear and anxiety about certain

tasks. The giant swing, flying fox and the obstacle course

were favourites. I had to test every muscle in my body to stay

balanced on the rope course—something our young students

of course managed very well.

Days like Monday take many hours to organise and I wish to thank the Grade 2 staff for their time

and effort. I particularly would like to thank the mum and dads who volunteered their time and

worked very hard in supervising and coordinating the many tasks throughout the day. A camp day

like this just would not be manageable without the assistance of our parents and it was terrific to

see the teamwork at play for the day. Take a look at some of the photos on the next page which

highlight the fun and energy of the day of the Grade 2 Camp Day and our ECO Day.

Grade 1 Adventure Day As I write today, our energetic Grade 1 students are participating in a full day of adventure, crafts

and animal experience within our school grounds. Our Grade 1 teachers and parent volunteers

are providing a fun day which complements our camp program throughout the school. As well as

the activities, a BBQ lunch makes the day even more special. I’m sure there will be some great

feedback from our little people when they head home tonight.

Have a great week everyone. Leanne TingwellLeanne TingwellLeanne TingwellLeanne Tingwell

PUT A SMILE ON YOUR CHILD’S FACE ….

And on ours’ as well! One way to put a smile on your child’s face is to become one of our valued volunteers in the Canteen! The excitement

is written all over their faces as they come up to see you helping us in such an important role. All we ask is for a small

commitment of a few hours of your time (9am to 11.45am) once a month.

Being on our Emergency List is also a great way to assist us as quite often we know we will be short the day before

and can give you early notice.

Feel free to pop in and chat to us Tuesdays to Thursdays between 9.30am and 1.30pm to find out all about how the

canteen works and how you can help.

NB: Unfortunately, no younger children are allowed to come with parents who work in our Canteen as it is a Occupa-

tional Health and Safety issue. Also government regulations require all persons working and volunteering with chil-

dren to have a Working With Children card. This is free to Volunteers (there is a small fee if you don’t have a current

passport size photo) and forms can be downloaded & lodged at your local Post Office.

Thanks for your time,

Suzi Cunningham (Canteen Manager)

The Salvation Army Christmas Food Appeal Begins

The Salvation Army annual Christmas Food Appeal is beginning! There are so many families in our community who de-

pend on extra help at Christmas time and without your help The Salvation Army would be limited in what they could do

for them.

It is a GK tradition to try and fill the barrels in the office each festive season and this year the Junior School Council will

be promoting this. We usually have the tubs brimming with goodies that are collected just before Christmas, ready to

sort and disperse to many needy families.

If you are able to donate any of the goods it would be greatly appreciated – every little bit helps! All donations can be

delivered to the office and placed in the barrel provided. Our Junior School Council will be reminding us at assembly

each week about bringing in goods and updating us with how the donations are growing.

The donations will be collected by a Salvation Army Leader after Friday DECEMBER 4th so get into the GK spirit and give

what you can to a very worthwhile cause.

Thanks in advance for your kindness,

Leanne Tingwell
