MAYOR’S REPORT & COUNCIL NEWS
FROM THE MAYOR National Veteran’s Rally During the period 4 May to 9 May 2014, 90 veteran cars and bikes made Robe their base for the 2014 national 1 and 2 cylinder Veterans Rally. Approximately 230 owners, drivers, officials, family members and support crew had the opportunity to enjoy Robe and the region. Judging by the feedback, the event was a great success and was enjoyed by all. This extends to the local community with the local traders receiving the additional boost of 230 extra visitors in what is traditionally a very quiet period. Many locals took the opportunity to carry out a close up inspection at the school ground prior to the run up the main street, where many of the vehicles operated their kerosene side lights and carbide driving lights. Many of the main street shops stayed open to add to the festive atmosphere, which was really appreciated.
Youth Engagement One of the great challenges for any council is meaningful youth engagement. A considerable number of Robe’s young people take up apprentice positions in the building trade, become fishers or farm hands or take up roles in tourism. Many marry and stay permanent residents. As a result, the decisions made by Council have a greater long term influence or effect on their lives. Could parents talk with children and discuss what ways could be used to engage with the youth. Does Council need to utilize social media? Should there be an annual youth forum? Could student representative bodies meet periodically with local council to present issues and views for youth? I would appreciate comments please.
Pathway Surface Finish
Council often receives correspondence regarding the colour of paths with a preference for light coloured material. Hot mix has been used because of its superior quality and durability; it does however fail on the colour requirement. Council has identified that utilizing a 2 coat hot spray using light stone would be an option that provides durability, lasting quality and the desired light colour appearance that has been asked for.
Draft Annual Business Plan & Budget 2014/2015 Council has now released its Draft Annual Business Plan and Budget for the 2014/15 financial year for the purpose of community consultation. Printed copies are available from Council’s Office and the VIC/Public Library or alternatively it can be viewed and downloaded from Council’s website at www.council.robe.sa.gov.au Members of the public wishing to make comment are invited to forward written submissions to the Chief Executive to be received by Council by 5pm on Friday 9 June 2014. Submissions can be forwarded to PO Box 1, Robe SA 5276 or via email; [email protected]

Baby bounce is more than just a story time aimed at children in the first year of life. It is a language enrichment program which we hope will be a lively, interactive & stimulating way for parents & caregivers to share songs, rhymes, reading aloud, lap-riding, exercises, action rhymes & lullabies with their children. Big brothers & sisters along with parent’s, grandparents & caregivers are also very welcome. Please bring a blanket or mat.
Any enquiries to Cassie or Wendy 8768 2465
The staff members at CCOWS are meeting individually with the CCOWS Director to talk about their roles as educators and carers in the service. It helps everyone clarify and confirm their commitment, purpose and focus at the child care service. During the meetings we will be looking at the values, skills, and interest which each staff member brings to create a happy and engaging environment, in which each child can thrive and develop. These professional appraisal meetings facilitate ways and ideas about how staff can improve their performance as educators and carers, how they can improve their interactions with children, with other staff and with families. We know that our “body language” can convey as much as the words we speak, and are conscious of the part we play as “role models”. Children are such astounding mimics and imitators, which is useful when we are encouraging them in their independence in eating, dressing, sharing, and respecting others. By showing actions and using appropriate words we can encourage children to behave and respond in a friendly manner. That’s a skill much needed in today’s world of increased “screen time” and decreased social experiences. So it’s a requirement for CCOWS staff to have much patience, and an understanding that they will need to repeat words, phrases and actions “over and over”. Even little improvements are celebrated, as we recognise the “hard work” it has been for both staff and children to achieve positive change. Robyn and the CCOWS team.

events below. Please note the following events are in the planning stages and some dates are yet to be confirmed.
We welcome community feedback and participation to make them happen! For more information, or to get involved please

This event will offer lectures on brewing many types of beer,
stout and porters, by acclaimed brewers. It will feature a
home brew competition, judged by experts. We are planning a
“best of the land and sea banquet” with matching beers for
Saturday night and on Sunday a “hair of the dog” beer
tastings and a grazing lunch with matched winning beers
from the competition.
We expect to have a significant sponsor, which will enable us
to promote the event throughout Western Victoria and the
Limestone coast region.
SEPTEMBER EVENT - ‘The blessing of the Fleet’ Seafood Banquet
Dates: Sun 28th September
The “Blessing of the Fleet” is a wonderful ceremony which is
conducted in villages and fishing ports all over the world to
bless the local fishing fleet and pays great respect to the
fishing community. This year, following the ceremony and the
“diving for the cross” we are planning a great seafood banquet
to be served at the harbour side, along with local wines and
music.
OCTOBER EVENT ‘The Robe Aviators Society - Giant Fly In’.
Dates: Fri 17th Sat 18th Sun 19th October
We are inviting aviators from 11 aero clubs in Victoria and
South Australia to fly into Robe for a celebration of aviation. We
expect up to 80 aircrafts included in the event. This will be the
opportunity for visitors to be shown the aircraft by the pilots
who will explain the ins and outs of their machines. The line up
of aircrafts will range from 80 year old Tiger moths and Austers
to Chinese fighter trainers. The event will run over 2 days, with
catering available at the airfield for lunch on Saturday and
breakfast on Sunday. On Saturday night the eateries of Robe
will put on a special aviators dinner including Loop the Loop
soup, Barrel role beef, fluffy cloud puddings, rocket fuel reds
and high octane whites. On the Sunday morning the aircrafts
will take off for their home bases after flying over Robe. Sunday
lunch will be the ground crew picnic conducted in all the town
eateries, for those of us left behind.
AUGUST EVENT - “Robe...Indoors”
A celebration of winter food, wine, art and music’.

winter dishes using local seasonal fish, beef, lamb and game.
They will be supported by local fishermen and farmers, who
will talk about the fish and meat they catch and grow. Learn
filleting techniques and which meat cuts are best for various
dishes. Warming winter menus will feature across Robe
eateries for the weekend. These dining events will also
feature wines from participating wineries. Listen to the wine
makers as they present and match their wines to delicious
local regional winter dishes.
Simultaneously, we will be staging a variety of musical
performances scheduling them throughout the day and
evening across selected (indoor) venues.
Art by acclaimed Robe artists will be on display and available
for sale in all the outlets participating in the event.
