Dear Parents/Caregivers Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been a very strange feeling at school. Student numbers are dwindling day by day as parents make the choice to transition to home schooling in an attempt to keep their family safe and reduce the spread of the virus amongst the community. Teachers have been working tirelessly to prepare work packages to assist families with home education. Work is also being uploaded to Connect and I would encourage you to log in regularly to check for updates. Thank you to all the families who demonstrated social distancing when picking up your childs pack from school last Thursday. As new information is received from the Department of Education in regards to what teaching and learning will look like in Term 2, I will update the website. Please check this space regularly to keep informed. hp://www.warriapendips.wa.edu.au/ Home Learning The transition to home learning will take time for everyone to get use to. VISION: "Developing the whole child.” MISSION: Academic and Civic excellence built on a strong foundation of quality teaching, inspired by rich cultural diversity.

Wellbeing

As you navigate your way through the home learning experience, remember to take time out to do fun stuff as a family and be kind to yourself. Being confined to home for an extended period of time can cause stress and conflict. Tips for looking after your children during isolation include;

Talking to your whole family about what is happening. Understanding the situation will reduce anxiety.

Help your children to think about how they have coped with difficult situations in the past and reassure them that they will cope with this situation too. Remind them that the isolation won't last for long.

Exercise regularly. Options could include exercise DVDs, dancing, floor exercises, yoga, walking around the backyard or using home exercise equipment, such as a stationary bicycle, if you have it. Exercise is a proven treatment for stress and depression.

Encourage your children to keep in touch with family and friends via telephone, email or social media (where appropriate). Wishing you and your family a Happy Easter and Safe Holiday. I look forward to catching up with you all in the virtual world. Natasha Doyle Principal

In week 5 and 6 as the season changed from Summer to Autumn, Year 3 - 6 were learning about Autumn leaves during Art. We talked about what the colour of the leaves were in summer and how they start to change as the season changes to Autumn. The students painted the background a warm autumn colour. They then used brown paint to paint their tree and the branches with stems. The next step was to paint a paper bag with water colours so that we could then cut leaves out. Once is was dry it gave the leaves a crinkly effect. They used brown and black crayons to draw veins on the leaves to create more detail. Take a look at our wonderful work in the library and the Senior Wet Areas, we are all very proud of them and think they look amazing!

Hi everyone! I thought it would be helpful to include here some details around support services that are being provided by the City of Stirling for people during these challenging times. City of Stirling Hotline: 1800 729 655. The following link will take you straight to the government website outlining all of the initiatives and services available: https://www.stirling.wa.gov.au/services-and-support/health-and-safety/coronavirus-update/support-for-vulnerable-people Here’s some information as a start: “The City has implemented a number of support services to help vulnerable and elderly members of the community in response to the current Coronavirus (COVID -19) situation. The City is designating several of its community centres and buildings to be used by the State Government or the community service sector in providing assistance to people experiencing homelessness. The City is also working with community organisations to provide access to commercial kitchens, allowing for meals to be provided to members of the community in need. Additional community services now in place include:

A support hotline for seniors and vulnerable community members

Welfare checks on vulnerable groups and individuals including Stirling Community Care clients, Men’s Shed members and Senior Citizens Club members

Increased Meals on Wheels production and supply, with the potential to increase capacity from 500 to 1,000 meals per day

Waiving fees for identified home and community care services

Distribution of emergency packs containing toiletry and sanitary items to vulnerable members of the community

Increased customer service responses.”

Finally, remember that the chaplain services will continue to be available at Warriapendi moving forward. If you would like to be in contact with me, please speak to Natasha Doyle (Principal). All the very best, Penny Eddison

Kindy – Yr 2 Gymnastics This term we have been lucky enough to have a coach come to our school from the Northern Districts Gymnastics Club. Gabe is a very talented qualified coach and gymnast. He has been coaching our early years students on Wednesdays in the assembly area. The students have loved doing his fun warm ups and activities during their lessons. Our school has been able to give this opportunity to our students, thanks to the Sporting Schools grant that Mr Pyvis worked to receive.

MEET THE STAFF Jennifer Chan Hi, my name is Jennifer Chan and I am the Manager Corporate Services, formerly titled School Registrar. I’ve been working at Warriapendi in this position since 1989 and have seen a lot of changes over 31 years. I’ve worked with 10 different Principals, a large number of different staff members and have seen many students go from Kindy through to Year 7, with some of those students now sending their children to our wonderful school. I was born in Bunbury and am a proud descendent of my great-great grandfather who came out from Ireland on the convict ship, the Phoebe Dunbar in 1853. I enjoy pastel painting, spending time with our 3 granddaughters and travelling with my husband of 42 years. I think it’s important to have something to look forward to each day and at the moment for me, it is coming to work each day at Warriapendi.. We are all going through a very unusual time in our lives right now but it will eventually get back to some degree of normality. I wish you all well over the coming months and look forward to seeing our school community back to the way it was very soon. Stay well and take care everyone! Lisa Catchlove My name is Lisa Catchlove and I work in the office as the School officer. I have been at Warriapendi since 2015. I am married and have two gorgeous daughters, my eldest is 21 this year and my younger daughter is 18. I have a funny little schnauzer called Rosie who makes me laugh every day. I enjoy reading, music, sports and socialising. I hope to do more travelling in the future now that my children are older. I strive to always be friendly and helpful in my position as School Officer of Warriapendi. I love being part of the Warriapendi team and community. Please come and say hi to me in the office.

MATHS AT HOME

Do you have a dice handy? Play these Maths games at home to help your child continue to practice their calculate skills.

Community footpath games You may have noticed there has been a bit of colour added to our footpaths. Mrs Hartfield and a team of helpers, spent some time on Wednesday last week, making some obstacle courses for our students and the community. Feel free to come and give them a go. You can also practise some sight words on the footpath by jumping on them and spelling them as you go. Let's keep our kids moving and active.

Kindy & Pre-primary Year 1 and Year 2 Year 3 & Year 4 Year 5 & Year 6

More or Less 1. Roll two dice together 2. Ask your child to tell you the number represented on each dice and to decide which has more, and which has less.

First to 20

1. Ask your child to roll the dice, this becomes their starting number. 2. Continue to roll the dice and add this number to the previous total. 3. The first to get to 20 wins! Extension: First to 100 (add to 100), or First to 0 (start at 100, 50 or 20 and subtract until you reach zero).

Fast Facts

1. Roll two dice and then multiply these to find the answer (for example if you roll a 3 & 4; 3 x 4 = 12). 2. The first person to call out the answer wins this round and gets a point. 3. The first player to get 10 points wins the game.

Roll and Round that Number

1.Roll a dice three times and create a number from 100 – 999 (eg rolling a 3, 7, 2 could make a 372). 2. Round this number to the nearest 10 (372 rounds to 370). Extension: Create decimal numbers eg. 3.72 and round to the nearest tenth; 3.7
