CANAL & RIVER TRUST OLDKNOW ’S LEGACYSamuel Oldknow was a remarkable man – starting life as a draper’s apprentice he created an industrial empire which changed the landscape around Marple and Mellor forever.

Canal & River Trust released a competitive tender for a company to help with revealing this extraordinary landscape and interpreting it for the visitors. Landmark were delighted to be awarded the tender and worked with Canal & River Trust and other stakeholders to bring the whole project to life.

Tasks involved included researching images of factory workers of the time to create some ‘weathering steel’ sculptures. This steel alloy has molybdenum added to make it corrode quickly

and produce an attractive maintenance-free patina which gradually darkens over time. The brass hat on the limekiln worker makes an attractive contrast.

Lecterns carrying ‘HardRok’ panels with a 10-year anti-fade guarantee present the interpretation attractively, with oak fingerpost and waymarker signage forming the wayfinding. The addition of etched zinc rubbing roundels to the waymarker posts adds an engaging feature for young visitors! There are further phases to the project including more lecterns and we will add photos as this most fascinating of places gradually unfolds.

GASCOYNE CECIL ESTATES HATFIELD HOUSEHatfield House is an amazing destination. It has been in ownership of the Cecil family for over 400 years and is steeped in history – ancient and modern. The daughter of Henry VIII was living in the Old Palace in 1558 when she learnt of the death of her sister, thus becoming the monarch better known as Queen Elizabeth I. The current house dates back to 1611 and is a beautiful example of Jacobean architecture.

Attractions include the House with its stunning interiors, the gardens, a children’s play area, Hatfield Park Farm and a selection of fascinating shops. With excellent road and rail access it really is a must-visit family destination.

Landmark is very privileged to have worked at this extraordinary location and have just completed phase two of the signage programme. The first phase was the external signage, digitally printed aluminium trays mounted between oak posts. This involved a lane closure on the busy A414 while the signs were being craned into position and were successfully completed.

The second phase was the internal signage which followed a similar style, although somewhat smaller and without lane closures!

A critical requirement was to match the Hatfield House corporate blue which was achieved and the end result looks great. This has been a very satisfying project and we look forward to working with the team again.

HOVETON GRE AT BROADWe couldn’t improve on their own description on the website ‘Hoveton Great Broad is one of the largest yet most secret lakes in The Broads.’

This wonderful gem in the heart of The Broads is undergoing a transformation overseen by Natural England, who we were privileged to work with on this special project. No less than £4.5 million is being spent on restoring the 37 hectare lake and upgrading the Nature Trail.

The brief was to design a suite of wayfinding signage which is waterproof (in fact might be underwater some of the time), weatherproof, sympathetic with the surroundings and informative. A minor point was that the Nature Trail can only be reached by boat!

We are proud to have been chosen by Natural England to work with them, and we partnered with The Way Design who produced some amazing content and a complete ‘family’ of complementary signage. If you like what they produced, just drop an email to Howard Swift [email protected] find out more!

Fabrication took place off site and the signs were shipped together with the installation team across the Broad. Conditions were perfect for installation (and photography as the pictures show) and the first stage of the project was successfully completed in June 2017.

RSPB SHERWOOD FORESTThis legendary place needs no introduction, in fact the motto is ‘Where legends grow’. Sherwood Forest is managed by the RSPB in a partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council, Sherwood Forest Trust, Thoresby Estate and The Woodland Trust.

Cafeteria Design rebranded this very iconic site, with Landmark producing the entrance and car park signage timed to coincide with the launch of the new visitor centre. Simple yet striking branding ensure these signs stand out and as the timber gradually weathers down will provide a perfect introduction to this remarkable place.

Following this, we manufactured and installed the wayfinding and it looks equally eye-catching. No power tools were used in the installation to minimise the disturbance to surrounding wildlife, and SSSI-quality installation ensured zero contamination of the ground.

Robin Hood is undoubtedly the most famous resident of the Forest, however the Major Oak was here before him (apparently it ’s around 1000 years old). Other residents who enjoy living here included the lesser spotted woodpecker and the tree pipit.

We look forward to continuing the work with RSPB and their partners at Sherwood!


WOODL AND TRUST COED FFOS L ASCoed Ffos Las is an extremely special place. The former colliery land and farmland is 120 acres of rolling landscape with panoramic views towards the South Wales coast.

In 2014 it was purchased by the Woodland Trust to create a Centenary Wood in honour of the part played by Wales in the First World War. No less than 90,000 trees have been planted including flower-rich glades, ponds and meadows.

The centrepiece of this moving place is a War Horse Sculpture with benches and interpretative signage around it, to provide a peaceful space to reflect on the enormous impact the war

had on the lives of the soldiers, and the community and countryside in which they lived.

Oak boards with a striking barbed wire pattern hold a series of plaques telling the story of how this area changed forever due to the huge demand for timber, and the resultant Forest Act introduced to rebuild and maintain timber reserves for the future.

The curved benches fit the sculpture and signage perfectly and provide a welcome opportunity to take in the fresh air and views, as well as the educational impact of Coed Ffos Las.

STOCKPORT COUNCIL BR AMALL HALL & PARKBramall Hall in Stockport is a superb example of a Tudor Manor House with origins dating back to the Middle Ages.

It is described as ‘one of the most beautiful treasures of England and it of national importance’. The hall’s restoration is now complete thanks to a £1.6million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Hall, with its 60 acres of landscaped parkland is a wonderful place to visit and you can find out more on the Stockport Council website.

Landmark tendered successfully for the design, manufacture & installation of the new wayfinding signage based on experience and attention to customer satisfaction.

The key consideration in the project was the fact that Bramall Hall is a heritage site and that the employer was keen to use materials with minimal environmental impact.

A wayfinding study was carried out and the scheme developed using two core products. Aluminium (a combination of solid and composite) was used for the main Entrance/Exit signs and lamp post flags, while recycled plastic was selected for the fingerpost and ladder signs. The design incorporated elements from the architecture and history of the Hall to complement this amazing property.

The contract was completed in 3 months during 2016 and the customer’s comment at the point of installation: ‘The guys are doing a great job, very pleased with everything so far.’

Oughtonhead Common

Welcome to Oughtonhead Common Local Nature Reserve…

HITCHIN

… a diverse mosaic of increasingly rare habitats, including wet and dry grassland, chalk stream, reed and sedge beds, scrub and woodland.

A network of paths allow you to explore Oughtonhead Common and the rich variety of wildlife found here. As you walk along the riverside path, look out for brown trout in the clear waters of the River Oughton, or if you’re lucky, the flash of a kingfisher flying past. In spring and summer, butterflies float across the grassland, while bees buzz amongst the wildflowers.

The main grassland area is an ancient medieval grazing common. Centuries of cattle grazing ensured a rich diversity of plant life thrived here, with over 200 species of plant recorded. However, when grazing stopped in the early 20th century, scrub and trees soon grew up, threatening the grassland and the wildlife which depends on it. Grazing was re-introduced in the 1990s, restoring the historic management of the common.

Oughtonhead Common is owned by North Hertfordshire District Council, who manage the site for the benefit of wildlife and the enjoyment of visitors. For more information contact us on 01462 474000.

Reedbed In Southern Country ParkReedbed surrounding the fishing lake attracts migratory summer and winter birds and provides shelter for aquatic and terrestrial wildlife. Reedbeds also protect wetlands from water pollutants and bank erosion. This habitat is declining across the country so creating new reedbed, such as here in a Southern Country Park, is important for conservation.

Reedbed Wildlife Characteristic species of reedbeds are often shy and are likely to be heard before they are seen. In the summer, listen out for the energetic songs of nesting birds such as sedge, reed and willow warbler as they flit though the reedbed hunting insects. Animals sheltering in or rustling through the reeds may include water shrew, water rail, and grass snake. Bolder wildlife which can be spotted in the reedbed includes grey heron, common tern, moorhen, dragonflies and damselflies. Winter can be the best time to spot wildlife in the reedbed as colourful visitors arrive to overwinter including bearded tit, snipe, goldeneye, teal, and tufted duck.

Reedbed Management Reedbeds are a transitional habitat spanning water and land to create a dynamic wetland environment. As reedbeds mature, dead vegetation builds-up on the ground causing the reedbed to become drier and allowing trees and scrub to establish. To prevent succession to woodland, reedbeds are traditionally cut or grazed on rotation allowing for continual habitat renewal. Reedbeds were once harvested for roof thatch although this is now less common.

In Southern Country Park, reed is cut on a 5-year rotation creating a mosaic of young and mature reedbed. Cut reed is raked into habitat piles away from the reedbed. Whilst common reed is the dominant plant you may also spot the tall flowering spires of purple loosestrife and other wetland plants such as sedge. The lakeside edge is protected from erosion by living willow revetments. At reedbed margins, willow and birch is cut on a 3-year rotation to prevent encroachment into the reedbed and to maintain perching spots for bird life. Much of the reedbed management is carried out by volunteers from the Friends of Southern Country Park.

An important role of the reedbed at Southern Country Park is to improve water quality of the fishing lake. Excess surface water from the St Michael’s Mead development is collected and stored in the lake to reduce flooding risk for surrounding homes. The reedbed provides a natural filtration system which removes contaminants from the surface run-off before water reaches the lake. The water quality in the lake is monitored regularly to ensure conditions are suitable for aquatic wildlife, and fish stocks are carefully managed to ensure a good mix of species and ages are maintained.

Unless otherwise stated, Plaswood Bollards require a minimum below ground depth of 450mm to 500mm and 400mm square. Setting in concrete to a strength of 23kN is preferred. Positioning pegs are available for keying into the concrete where bollards are supplied with a pre-drilled hole located approximately 200mm up from the base. All bollards are black unless stated otherwise.

Plaswood round based bollards are available in a range of diameters. A choice of round or square tops are available, together with options for banding. All round based bollards are black and 1500mm in length.
