FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Welcome to Week 9! It was wonderful for our school and teachers to be recognised in a recent letter from Brad Russell, Director Public Schools NSW, congratulating the school community “…and above all, the teachers on an outstanding professional imperative to improve results.” Holbrook Public School was one of five local schools identified “…for overreaching targets, goals and improvement measures for reading and comprehension.” Representatives from School Services will soon visit the school to observe and analyse outstanding leadership and teaching practice, in order to support other schools to perform in the same way in these priority areas. Harmony Day – Last Wednesday, students came to school dressed in orange, red or pink to celebrate Harmony Day. The motto of the day was ‘everyone belongs’ and a positive and supportive feel was evident across the school. Students raised money for Burundi and placed silver coins on a map. Fruit tubes were sold and $460 was raised which is a terrific effort. Peer Support Camp – It was great to drop in and see our Year 6 students at the Great Aussie Resort for the Peer Support Camp on Thursday afternoon. Two unnamed students had plenty of excitement in their canoe as they sat in the middle of the weir. When they discovered a large spider had joined them for the journey, all thoughts of supporting their peers were discarded. Mrs Wedgwood and Miss Lavis were in stitches as the girls stood screaming, taking swipes at the spider with their oars. Needless to say, their wild attempts to save themselves from the spider caused the canoe to capsize. Where were the cameras?! FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Welcome to Week 9! – It was wonderful for our school and teachers to be recognised in a recent letter from Brad Russell, Director Public Schools NSW, congratulating the school community “…and above all, the teachers on an outstanding professional imperative to improve results.” Holbrook Public School was one of five local schools identified “…for overreaching targets, goals and improvement measures for reading and comprehension.” Representatives from School Services will soon visit the school to observe and analyse outstanding leadership and teaching practice, in order to support other schools to perform in the same way in these priority areas.

PSSA Cricket – Recently, we hosted Howlong Public School for Round 2 of the PSSA State Cricket Knockout. Mr Wedgwood prepared a terrific pitch for the match, but unfortunately Howlong were too strong, passing our score of 104 with seven overs and five wickets in hand. Our team batted well and improved in the field as the match continued. Water Polo – Audrey Lieschke and Maddie Wheeler recently trialled for the Riverina Water Polo Team in Albury. Audrey played well in her first attempt at the game and Maddie was successful in making the Riverina team. She will now go on to the state carnival in Sydney. Representative AFL – On Thursday, Angus, Sam and Jim travelled to Coolamon for the Eastern Riverina AFL Carnival. By all accounts, all of the boys played well, with Sam and Angus being chosen to represent Eastern Riverina. Congratulations Boys, and I’m positive Jim will push at least one step further next year. Dance Instructor – On Tuesday a specialist dance teacher from James Fallon High School is visiting to provide guidance for our dance group in their preparations for the Riverina Dance Festival. The group recently auditioned for the Schools Spectacular as well. Many thanks to Rosie Saywell for all of her efforts in coaching and coordinating the dance group! Tell Them From Me Student Survey – Students in Years 4 to 6 will complete the Tell Them From Me Student Survey. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 12 March and 13 April. Participating in the survey is voluntary. Cross Country – The school cross country carnival is on this Thursday 29 March at the school oval. Thanks to all those parents who offered to help out with checkpoints. There were more helpers than checkpoints, which was fantastic. Parent helper notes went home last week. I will speak to the parent helpers just before 10:00 am on Thursday morning. The students are to come dressed in their house colours (Paterson - red, Lawson - blue, Mackellar - green). Please ensure that the students have sleeves and a hat, as they will be out in the sun most of the day. The day will be followed by a barbecue run by the school P&C, Easter activities and the much-anticipated Easter raffle. Parents are most welcome to attend any or all of the day. The plan for the day is: 9.20 am - rolls marked, get organised for the carnival 9.45 am - students walk the course, parent helper meeting 10:00 am - races begin, all students to watch from the middle of the oval 12 noon (approx.) - P&C barbecue 1:00 pm - 2.40 pm - Easter activities 2:40 pm - Pack up and into hall 2:50 pm- Easter Raffle in the hall Easter – Easter afternoon activities will be held on Thursday 29 March 2018, from 1:00 pm to 2:40 pm. Students will be participating in many fun activities in the afternoon. The activities will be:

• Egg and Spoon Races • Parachute Games • Easter Bunny hop • Bunny Nose Relay

Then at 2:50 pm, students will go the hall for the Easter Raffle. Carpark Safety – After a couple of ‘close calls’ in the school carpark last week, it is important to note that parents and carers must come in to the school to get their children. If being picked up from the front carpark, students have been asked to wait with Mr Fisher near the office. Please support us in reminding your children not to run into the carpark in order to keep everyone safe. Have a safe and enjoyable Easter break. Students will return on Tuesday. RIVERINA SWIMMING CARNIVAL Congratulations to our 14 students for their fantastic behaviour and sportsmanship at the Riverina Swimming Carnival on Wednesday 14 March. The students all competed to the best of their ability and represented our school and the Southern Riverina proudly. A big thank you to Margot Pitzen, for organising some training for the students. Thanks also to the many parents who attended the carnival and supported their children. Once again, well done to all students for their fantastic efforts. Chrissy Lavis Swimming Co-ordinator

ALBURY/RIVERINA BASKETBALL It was wonderful to see so many students interested and trying out for the PSSA basketball. Thank you to everyone who tried out. I would like to congratulate Jack Pitzen, Harrison Shea, Isabella Weaven and Tara Jepson for being selected to represent Holbrook Public School and participating in the PSSA basketball trials. A massive congratulations to Issy and Tara for being selected to next level of the PSSA basketball trials. On 5 March Issy and Tara played basketball at the Lauren Jackson centre, they competed to the best of their ability and represented our school amazingly, however they were not successful in being selected for the Riverina team. Well done to Issy and Tara. Jade Lucas PEER SUPPORT CAMP What a fantastic time the Year 6 students, Mrs Wedgwood and Miss Lavis had last Thursday and Friday at the Peer Support Camp. We travelled out to the Wymah Valley Holiday Park on Thursday morning. After settling in, the students made the trek up to the flying fox and thoroughly enjoyed the exhilarating experience. Then, we all ventured to the banks of Lake Hume for a canoeing adventure to develop their teamwork and resilience. A couple of students provided much entertainment for all when their canoe was taken over by a spider and both canoeists ended up rather wet! The afternoon was spent learning about running a Peer Support group, communication and resilience. The students were then rewarded with some free time at the water park, swimming pool and jumping pillow, as well as a visit from Mr Fisher. On Friday morning, the Peer Support lessons continued and then the students were challenged with some logical thinking team building challenges. A huge thanks must go to the team at the Wymah Valley Holiday Park, the parents who transported the students to and from the camp, and Mrs Wedgwood and Miss Lavis. Well done to the students on their excellent behaviour and willingness to participate in discussions and challenges.

CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR TERM 2

Do you have some free time in your calendar during Term 2? If so, we would really value your time to help with lunch orders on Monday and/or Friday mornings. Not only is the process simple, it only takes around 45 minutes out

of your day and your child loves to see you there. Please email Georgie Millard on [email protected] to volunteer or if you have any questions.

LOST PROPERTY As Term 1 rapidly comes to an end, we urge all students and parents to have a look through the lost property box, located in the office. Any unclaimed items will be donated either to the Op Shop or to our second hand uniform shop on Friday afternoon.
