UPDATE

Warner Bros./WMN’s RaeLynn discusses her most influential music:1. Dolly Parton: She’s more than just an artist. She’s somebody who changed and brought some light to this world. That’s who I aspire to be – an artist who does more than just sing on a stage. I want to make a difference.2. Miranda Lambert’s Kerosene: It was the first record I ever bought with my

own money. 3. Ray Charles at the Houston Rodeo: It was my first concert. I remember my dad telling me I was seeing a legend. I didn’t know what he meant at the time, but I do remember thinking it was such an incredible experience. I got goosebumps so many times. I was so young, but I’ll never forget that moment.4. Taylor Swift’s Speak Now: It was so cool that she wrote every song on that record by herself. That just doesn’t happen a lot, where an artist is so vulnerable.5. Dixie Chicks: I’ve always been a big fan of them and their sound, especially growing up in Texas. I just loved all of their songs and they influenced me a lot.• Highly regarded music you’ve never heard: Everybody knows who she is now, but I remember when Adele won New Artist of the Year at the Grammys. I was so upset because she won over the Jonas Brothers. Little did I know, she was this incredible singer. And then I listened to her songs, like “Chasing Pavements,” and thought, “I’m really glad she won.” (laughs)• “Important” music you just don’t get: Hard rock/metal. I respect it, but I don’t really understand it. • An album you played incessantly: Dierks Bentley’s Riser. I couldn’t get enough of that album. • Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Hailee Steinfeld’s “Starving.” It is such a cool pop song. The concept is unique and I wish I’d written it. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I love musicals. I have the Sweeney Todd, Beauty and the Beast and Mamma Mia! musicals on my phone.

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE

took the winning call. “Dave said, ‘You’re the 103rd caller – you win! Who’s this?’” Rush recalls, along with a brief silence. “Then we heard, ‘Um, Bob Cole.’” Cole, now a Country Radio Hall of Famer, was the morning man at the competition and supposedly was only wondering if he could get through. Cole famously got his car, though he had to sign a release allowing KEYI to use his name and likeness for promotional purposes. “We never made him do anything for us,” Rush says, explaining the affair had already sparked a torrent of publicity for the station. They did, however, have an ad agency contact Cole telling him to report to an Austin tailor so he could be fitted for a tuxedo for a starring role in the station’s new television commercial. “We were just jerking his chain,” Rush chuckles. Radio was supposed to be fun. Programming Top 40 in Galveston, Rush was invited by promotion vet “Bubba” Wayne McManners to sit fifth-row for The Who’s 1975 North American tour open in Houston. Rush was also present for the now-infamous after-party, which McManners had organized for 2,000 at the Houston Oaks Hotel themed after the band’s new single “Squeeze Box.” “As the night went on, some articles of clothing came off, the cops showed up and [The Who bassist] John Entwistle got hauled to jail for punching a Houston police officer,” Rush muses. “A legendary, unforgettable party.”

Working Stiffs: MCA’s Ken Rush (l) and “Bubba” Wayne McManners show off their Biassed Programmers Award, circa 1977. “About the only record of Wayne’s I never would play was ‘Depot Street’ by Mudcrutch,” Rush says. “He always joked it was just biased programmers that kept it from being a hit.”

over and the good stuff to start around 4pm. As I walked around the hall of fame I thought, my God, there’s everybody I listened to as a kid and I’m here with them. So you spent some time in the hall itself. What was that like? It’s grand ... a wonderful place. They didn’t have much of a building for a long time, but I recommend it to anyone who has anything at all to do with radio and finds themself in Chicago. Now you’ll be immortalized there, too. I’ll have to go back and see that. I did see Blair Garner’s picture. I don’t know whether I should admit this or not, but when I was at Full Service KFI/Los Angeles the station took a billboard saying I was the new Country guy. Sometimes I would drive down Sunset to see it. I’d stop and point it out to people walking by. Only one time did someone look and say, “Is that you?” From marveling at your name in lights to seeing it in the Hall of Fame... A dream come true.

Rush again found himself at the center of music history almost 20 years later when in 1993 he left KPLX/Dallas for his second job in record promotion (he’d worked for MCA in the late ‘70s). PD Bobby Kraig had just left for Arista and tapped Rush as a Dallas-based regional. “I’ve never seen anything like what was going on there,” Rush says of the label’s early days. “Alan Jackson’s Here In The Real World had exploded, and in pretty quick order came Diamond Rio, Pam Tillis, Brooks & Dunn, Radney Foster – just one right after the other. The batting average was unheard of.” There were No. 1s and favorite No. 1s. “Lee Roy Parnell’s ‘Tender Moments’ was special,” Rush says. “[Arista President] Tim DuBois was just committed to the idea that his music needed to be on the radio and it didn’t matter if we made a dime. He just loved that guy. We all did.” Other fruitful stops included Equity, where in the mid-2000s he helped secure Little Big Town’s first hits, and Thirty Tigers, from which he just retired. “I was fortunate to work with some great people,” Rush summarizes. “And four of the best VPs ever in Bobby Kraig, David Haley, Bill Macky and Pam Newman.” The business was changing, however, and so was Rush. “I remember being in radio in Galveston in my mid-20s and these two older record guys, Al Mathias and Norris Green, telling me how they’d carried around their own record player when they’d started because some of the stations they called on didn’t have one outside the control room,” he says. “And I thought, ‘Man, these dudes have been doing this a long time; how can they relate to me?’ I finally started thinking that some of these young programmers must think the same thing about me.” And, Rush laughs, “I just don’t give a shit anymore about all those numbers.” Reach him here. –Russ Penuell

Chart Chat Congrats to Jason Aldean, Carson James, Lee Adams, Jim Malito and the Broken Bow promotion staff on the No. 1 ascension of “A Little More Summertime.” The song is the second consecutive chart-topper from his They Don’t Know album. And kudos to Damon Moberly and the Mercury staff for securing 36 adds on Billy Currington’s “Do I Make You Wanna,” topping this week’s board.

Blair and the Opry’s Pete Fisher did your induction. What is your connection with them? Blair is one of America’s great broadcasters. After MidNite was something that had never been done before. I watched that come to fruition and have always had great regard for him. On top of it he’s truly a nice man. With Pete, here’s the man in charge of the country music institution and he’s up there talking about me? If there’s ever any doubt that you’ve arrived, that cements it. I really got to know him a couple of years ago when they did the Living Legend event. He was coming, so I asked if he would mind saying a couple of words and he said a lot of words. So you had no idea what he and Blair would be saying? None. I was hopeful it would be positive. (laughs)

We’ve covered your acceptance already (CAT 11/18), but now that you’ve had a few days to reflect, what stands out? I was so hopeful to get through it without having any sort of breakdown, but I was not successful. I wanted to make my point, say thank you and cover everybody I’ve worked with all these 40 years, particularly my wife Nan. That’s the one that got me. At least I didn’t lose my place. My parents never had a whole lot of faith in my chosen endeavor – “Bobby, you should be giving some thought to a real job,” they said, and this was after the 15th time I was fired. When I got to the podium I stood there and stared out at the room for a few moments. I thought, this is where I would say to my folks, “This is what perseverance brings.” God in heaven, it really is true. Here I am. –Chuck Aly
