FEBRUARY BABIES (continued):

• You might not recognize the name of Daniel Lawrence Whitney, butyou’ve probably heard his work. Betterknownas“Larry theCableGuy,”thisFebruary1963babygothisstartasadiscjockeyataBlueSprings, Missouri, radio stationbefore advancing to the BlueCollar Comedy Tour. He’s often heardsaying,“Git‘erdone,”and“Idon’tcarewhoyaare, that’sfunnyright there.” You’ll usually see“Larry”inhistrademark“redneck”attire — jeans, flannel shirt andcamouflage hat. He named hisdaughter Reagan because in his words, “Ronald Reagan was thegreatestpresidentever.”

• SpeakingofRonaldReagan, canyou name this February baby’s firstscreen role? Itwas the1937film “Love Is on theAir.”Reaganhad actually started his career “on the air” when the Universityof Iowa hired him in 1932 to broadcast the Hawkeyes’ football games at the rate of $10 per game. Reagan appeared in over 50movies,buthismostfamousisprobably 1940’s “Knute Rockne,All American.” He entered activemilitary duty during World War II in 1942, but because of hisnearsightedness was prohibited from going overseas. He became California’s 33rd governor in 1967 andheld theoffice for two terms.Although Reagan ranks high inpopularity as a U.S. President,he was actually defeated for the nominationinboth1968and1976,beforefinallywinningin1980.Hisadministration is remembered for the end of the Cold War. When Reagan died in 2004 at the age of93,hehadbeensufferingfromAlzheimer’s Disease for over tenyears.

• Although we think of GloriaVanderbilt as a jeans designer, she was first a painter, studyingat the Art Students League ofNew York, and known for heroil paintings, watercolors andpastels. She also did artwork for Hallmark cards. She was born an heiress of the famous Vanderbilt railroad family, and,at theageof15months, inheritedahalf-sharein a $5 million trust fund when her father succumbed to cirrhosis. It wasn’t until she was nearing 50 years old that she stepped into the fashion world, starting with alineofscarves.Bythemid-1970s,her famous swan logo could be seenonclothing, perfume, leathergoods and liqueurs.

Page 2 Tidbits® of Fort Wayne, Allen CountyVanderbilt is the mother of CNN newsanchorAndersonCooper, whois the great-great-great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt. Cooper himself was amodel for Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren from age 10 to 13.

• IfChristieBrinkleyhadn’tmovedtoParistostudyartin1973,shemaynever have been the cover girl on three Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue editions and more than 500 other magazine covers. As shestood in a Paris post office shewas “discovered” by anAmericanphotographer, Errol Sawyer, whotook Brinkley’s first modelingpictures.Speakingofherdiscovery,Brinkleyhas said, “Iwasbasicallya surfer girl from California. I never looked like amodel.”You’ve seenher photo on the cover of Vogue,Newsweek, Rolling Stone andEsquire, among others, as wellLife magazine’s best-selling issue ever. She’s been the spokesperson for Chanel, Max Factor, Nissan,Revlon, Halston, Anheuser-Buschandmanyothers. Inher freetime,Brinkley isanavid fanof theNewYork Islanders hockey team.

HAVE A HEART!We all know that hearts are synonymous with Valentine’s Day. This week,Tidbitsstudiesuponthehumanheart, themuscle that “takesa lickin’andkeepsontickin’!”• Just a little larger than the size

of your fist, your heart weighsbetween 7 and 15 ounces (200 to 425 g). The average heart beats about72timesperminute,whichisabout100,000timesaday.Youdothe math —That’s 3.6 million times every year. If you live 70 years, that’s 2.5 billion beats over the course of your lifetime.

• Everydayyourheartpumps2,000gallons (7,570 l) of blood throughyour body’s 60,000 miles (96,560km) of blood vessels. Turn on your kitchen faucet full blast for the next 45 years and that will equal the amount of blood pumped by your heart during your lifetime. That’s about1.5milliongallons(5,678,118l),whichwouldfillabout200tankercars on a train.

• Aboutfourweeksafterconception,a fetus’ heart starts beating. Its heart rate is about 150 beats per minute, twiceasfastasanadult’s.At 12weeks, its heart is pumping60 pints (28 l) of blood every day.

• The heart cavity is made up of four parts, two upper chambers

and two lower chambers. The upper compartments are called the right and left atria, and thelower chambers are the right and left ventricles. The body’s largest artery, the aorta, originates fromthe left ventricle, the largest andstrongest chamber that pumps to all body parts. Its walls are about ½ inch (1.27 cm) thick. Your body contains about 75 trillion cells that receive blood from the heart. Only onebodypart, thecornea, receivesno blood.

• Theword“cardiac”means“relatedtotheheart,”andhasitsoriginsintheGreekwordforheart,kardia.

• There’s a difference between the hearts of men and women. The man’s is typically about 2 ounces (62grams)heavier,butbeatsabouteight fewer times per minute.

• Whenyouhaveagoodbellylaugh,up to 20 percent more blood is pumped throughout your entire body. This can contribute to stress reduction, solaughitup!

• Theworld’sfirstsuccessfulhumanheart transplant was completed in 1967 by South African physicianDr. Christiaan Barnard. Therecipient Louis Washansky lived 18 days. Today, heart recipientsliveanaverageof15years.About3,500 transplants are performed

every year. After two years, about80 percent of recipients are alive,andafterfiveyears,73percentofmales and 67 percent of females still survive. Medical research has shown that same-gender transplants have better results.

• The world’s longest-surviving heart transplant recipient lived 31 years after his surgery. Tony Huesman was 20 years old when viral pneumonia damaged his heart and he received a new one in 1978. He lived until 2009,whenironically,itwascancerthat claimed his life.
