Beaumaris Primary School is committed to developing the Information Communication Technologies (ICT) for all students. The ICT School Improvement Team plays a key role in integrating ICT in all learning environments. The team is made up of teachers across all areas of the school which enables them to assist with the implementation of ICT in their level.

This year, our specific aim will be to develop staff to become supportive and active contributors, integrating best practice use of eLearning in their programs. Some of the goals the team are working towards include:

· Continue to update hardware resources within each classroom and computer laboratory.

· Complete the whole school eSmart accreditation process.

· The ICT team continue to lead ICT professional learning for all staff.

· Completion of the ePotential Capabilities survey by all staff who then will be working on areas for development.

· Continue to implement the Whole School ICT Planner.

School Improvement Team: English Leader: Sarah Bracey In 2014 we are continuing with a whole school focus on the CAFE Reading Program. All staff have already worked this year with Julie Shepherd-Literacy Consultant on effective classroom implementation of the CAFE framework . CAFE is: - tools used for explicit teaching of the four main reading areas (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, Expanding vocabulary) - supports a high level of interaction between student and teacher - supports targeted skill development - includes a menu of reading skills and strategies to support reading development The formal reading assessment tools used to inform our explicit teaching focuses during a CAFE reading block include the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmarking system Prep-6, Comprehension Assessment of Reading Strategies (CARS)3-6 and Ondemand online Department Assessment. Throughout Term 1 teachers have been working collaboratively to identify students current spelling skill level in order to plan for spelling clinic groups. It is a key priority for our teachers to address immediate student needs. On Friday the 28 January and Saturday 1 March Sarah Bracey, Pip Maddern, Sheryl Skewes and Julie Shepherd attended a spelling professional learning program hosted by international experts Pete Bowers and Lyn Anderson focusing on Structured Word Inquiry. Dogs at school We would like to remind parents about the rules governing dogs entering school grounds. At no time are dogs allowed inside the school grounds—i.e. within the black fence which surrounds the school. Dogs must not be left tied up and unattended outside the school at pick up time. The dog must be within effective sight and voice control of the owner AT ALL TIMES. If your dog accompanies you to school at pick up time, please arrange for your child to meet you outside the school gates, so you are able to stay with your pet. Unattended dogs (even the best behaved ones) are a potential risk to other students, siblings and parents.

Group Management Working with different ability groups This session will include information about how you can help during literacy and investigation sessions as a classroom helper in the junior classrooms. Thank you, Sarah Bracey and Anna Redlich. Street parking around the school We respectfully ask parents to consider our school neighbours when parking cars in local streets at the start and end of each day. We had an incident this week when one of our parents parked and completely blocked the driveway of one of our neighbours on Dalgetty Road. This prevented the mum living there from picking her own children up from their school. The car remained blocking the drive until nearly 4pm when our school family returned to the car to leave for home. We remind parents that parking across driveways is illegal and is liable to a fine. Premier’s Reading Challenge 2014 Reading is an essential life skill for everyone and the Challenge encourages families to be actively involved in supporting children to read. Today we have sent home a 2014 Participation and Privacy Consent Form to enable your child to take part in the Challenge, could you please complete these ASAP and return them to your classroom teacher. To find out more about the Challenge and access the booklist visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc Ignite Bollywood

LEVEL LOW DOWN Prep

Last Friday we had a terrific Teddy Bears Picnic! We celebrated our learning of letter T by making toast, had a picnic with our year 6 buddies and cuddled our teddies. We shared picture story books with our buddies. The Preps are enjoying their year 3 reading buddies who join us every Friday afternoon to share stories. Please remember your child is welcome to bring their favourite book from home to read at school. Please return the ‘Privacy Permission and Authority Form 2014’ which is a pale yellow notice. Check your child’s seagull notice pocket daily for any communication and notices. We hope you have a restful long weekend and we look forward to the Preps starting full time from Tuesday 11th March (9am-3.30pm).

Year One This week in year 1…….

MATHS: We have continued to expand our place value understanding through lots of hands-on games/activities, using materials such as icypole sticks & MAB blocks. This week, we also had a great time measuring and comparing the lengths of objects outside and around our classroom – some of us even measured our friends! ENGLISH: We are continuing to learn about transactional writing. We all really enjoyed writing letters to our teachers in class this week. We even tried using question marks too! Our spelling focus is the letter ‘e’ as in step, kept and excellent.

Year Two This week the year 2s continued to focus on RENAMING NUMBERS and COLLECTING DATA. Our favourite maths game is Wipe Out on the calculator and the Nasty Game. During investigations, reporters have surveyed the classes to find out favourite footy teams, animals and books. We have also focused on showing respect to one another by using our manners and speaking in a friendly tone of voice. We have also been using a correct pencil grip when writing. Persuasive texts have been a lot of FUN! This week we explored the structure of persuasive texts and began writing one as a class. Our reading focus has been RETELLING. Thank you to the parents who kindly donated cardboard boxes for the collage areas.

Year Three

Year 3 students took part in Clean-Up Australia Day on our school oval last Friday. The effort students put into this activity and the genuine responsibility shown is a credit to them all. Isabelle from 3E thought that it was great that there was not too much rubbish on the oval because that meant everyone must be placing their rubbish in the bin. Year 3s have been learning to write a narrative including carefully chosen adjectives, (some of us are getting very good at using the Thesaurus section of our dictionaries!). There has been lots of discussion and activities looking at all the parts of a writing piece that make up a narrative. The students are keen to let their imaginations go wild and write away! On Fridays the Year 3s meet with the Preps for Buddy Reading. Lots of excited students sharing a book is lovely to see. We are continuing to work through the steps to solve simple maths problems in preparation Naplan. Mathletics is a great resource for your child to practise these skills. Students are enjoying all the different clinic groups with mixed classes, especially their maths problem solving groups on Fridays.

Year Four

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY Last Friday 28th February year 4 participated in Clean Up Australia Day by visiting the Beaumaris Community Centre and picking up all the rubbish we could find. We did a very thorough job and ended up with 8 full garbage bags! We are very pleased with ourselves and proud of the fact that we have prevented all this litter ending up in our bay. We also sorted it so that recyclables wouldn’t end up in landfill. We would also like to thank Jenna Brown’s dad Ben for coming along and helping.

Year Five

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the District Swimming Sports on Tuesday. Some amazing performances and results for BPS!!! Our Grade 5 students have been writing some fabulous persuasive texts and are working through the writing process to refine their drafts and publish their work. Family discussions around a range of topics are a great way for children to form opinions and develop reasonable arguments for their writing. For maths we are continuing work on place value. This week we have introduced ‘tenths’ and ‘thousandths’ and have been exploring our understanding of decimal fractions through a variety of games and hands on materials. Your child has probably started talking about their Education Research Project in relation to their interests. We have started conferencing with students to assist them with their ERP proposal forms and begun research during our ICT session. It is important to remember your child’s ERP will be on an aspect of Geography with a link to their interest – not a project on their interest. We are looking forward to our special visit from Michael Scott this Friday. He is coming to share his extensive mapping knowledge with our students. We love having parents involved and know many of you have skills and knowledge in a wide range of areas. Please touch base with your child’s teacher anytime throughout the year if you would like to share or discuss an idea. The students have really enjoyed their first 2 rounds of inter- school sport and have been great representatives of Beaumaris Primary. Please remember to be at school by 8.30 on Friday mornings as we need to leave by 8.45am sharp.

Year Six

This week the first round of Japanese Belts (White Belts) were awarded to grade 6 students in assembly. To earn a White Belt the students must:

read and write their name in katakana understand gestures used in Japan sing Happy Birthday in Japanese say self-introduction in Japanese understand gestures used in Japan read and write hiragana a – ko know four different greetings in Japanese

A wall of honour is being prepared in the SALC building to chart each student’s achievement. Will anyone earn their Black Belt? On Friday we will be playing sport against Beaumaris North at home. We know many of our students will be competing in sports carnivals this weekend and we wish them luck and look forward to hearing about their achievements. Enjoy your long weekend!
