HAZARDS OF SOLDER AND CHEMICAL FUMES:

Fume Extraction for a Healthy Work Environment (Some Background): Concerned by the acrid

odour given off by lead-free fluxes, solder wire and solder pastes?Rework professionals

are increasingly calling for better health and safety measures and better fume extraction. Lead-free

reworking processes require higher temperatures and greater use of more active fluxes, which could

account for the stronger smell of the gases released during lead-free rework. The often unpleasant

odour is a matter of concern for many electronics manufacturing operators, who are worried that it

may signal an increased health hazard. Even though the smell of a gas is not necessarily an indicatorof its impact on health, the UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) concurs that rework professionals

are right to be concerned. This is partly thanks to the fact that, after years of no-clean solder fluxes,

lead-free soldering has triggered a return to the electronics workbench of rosin-based fluxes. In

its booklet "Solder Fumes and You" (www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/ingd248.pdf), the H&S underlines the

possible health hazards that can arise from the use of rosin-containing flux materials. When they

are heated to the higher lead-free processing temperatures, they form fumes, or colophony, that

can irritate the skin, respiratory tract and eyes. It warns that "Rosin-based solder flux fume is now

regarded as one of the most important causes of occupational asthma in Britain", and adds that if

ventilation is poor, the effects may also be felt by others in the work area, even if they are not involved

in the soldering process.

FILTRATION THE RIGHTCHOICE:

Enter the Chemtools CVX Fume Extraction System

Filtration is the onlycost effective way to approach fume and chemical extraction in an area from

which the contaminated air is to be removed, especially if it is not located conveniently for the use

of external extraction.

Several stages of filtration take place before the filtered air is returned in to the workplace:

Initial cleaning of the air takes place by way of a pre-filter; these filters stop molecules down to 5microns. The open structure of the first stage discourages surface loading and promotes depth

filtration, ensuring a high dust holding capacity and reducing resistance to airflow. The denser

backing filter and final scrim material provides finer filtration to 5 micron.

The next particulate filtration that is normally used is HEPA filters, which remove particles to 0.3

micron. This type of filter is preferred for general soldering however HEPA filters cannot be used

with chemicals

The next stage of filter is provided by carbon filters. Carbon impregnated fibre filters give additional

filtration alongside the initial intake filters, the filtered air is then re circulated back into the workplace.

This type of filter (although optional) is that which is recommended for chemical filtration.

Ionisation smoke alarms may detect visible fire particles

associated with fast flaming fires sooner than photoelectric

smoke alarms. Conversely, photoelectric smoke alarms may

detect visible fire particles associated with slow smouldering
