More patrollers needed

I believe that communities have the ability to solve their problems with good leadership and people working together. What better illustration of this then the two community patrols, which have been set up in One Tree Point and in the rest of Bream Bay to provide an extra pair of eyes and ears for the police! Since the Bream Bay group started its nightly patrols several months ago there has been a marked drop off in burglary and vandalism in the Waipu area at least. I still need to find out if the same effect has been felt in the other areas this patrol covers – Kepa Rd., the Lakeside Industrial Park and Ruakaka township, the Ruakaka Village and the Ruakaka Beach area. I hope it has. It can be heartbreaking for business people who work extremely hard to provide our community with good services to find their shop front graffitied or their windows broken and goods stolen. Appreciation for their efforts is the least we can offer our trades and service providers. Vandalism of their property is an undermining of their efforts. In the Police Report on page of this edition, there is a very graphic example of just how much difficulty petty burglaries can cause individuals. In a caché of suspected stolen goods found at an address in the Ruakaka Village was a purse containing somebody’s diabetes medication. In the same purse was an ipod with a set of earphones. The ipod, I imagine, contained the music the victim of this crime enjoyed listening to, an aid to help a person in not the best of health have some quality of life. I often wish we could get hold of the people who commit these selfish and thoughtless crimes and sit them in a room with the individuals they have harmed, explaining to them very loudly and clearly all the damage they have caused. Criminals, for the most part, I believe are stupid people,

without the ability to empathise or imagine the effects of their crimes. I was once approached in Whangarei by a Mongrel Mob member in full regalia offering to sell me a book about his life. I told him, I preferred to read about good people and found books written by criminals rather boring. He agreed with me and said this is why he had turned his life around. I had my doubts. Why then did he think the story of his exploits with the Mongrel Mob was worth writing about? The Bream Bay patrol group at present has around 10 fully committed patrol members and another 20 who can offer occasional support. More are needed so this task doesn’t become too burdensome on the volunteers. Patrols are carried out in pairs, in a patrol car with signwriting on its side, so its presence is instantly recognisable. The aim is to have enough volunteers so each is called upon just one night a month. Training is provided and volunteers are not expected to confront anyone directly. If you would like to join this very worthwhile community enterprise phone Constable Martin Geddes – 432 4030 and leave a message.

Police are looking for a man who is alleged to have assaulted a 15-year-old girl in her home on Marsden Point Road in Ruakaka on Wednesday May 22. At around 9.45am the man knocked on the door of the house and spoke to the girl. The girl had turned to walk back into the house and to close the door behind her when the man allegedly forced the door open and entered the house. A struggle ensued between the victim and the man who allegedly tried to sexually assault the girl. A car pulling up the driveway of a neighbouring property disturbed the man who ran off and was last seen, heading towards Marsden Point Road. The victim has described the man as: a light skinned Maori, aged in his 30s, of medium build with bushy eyebrows. He was wearing a black beanie, a black long sleeved T-shirt and black pants and boots.Police would like to hear from anyone who saw a man fitting this description on Marsden Point Road or in the general vicinity of this area and Princes Road on the morning of Wednesday May 22. Police advise members of the public to be very cautious about opening their doors to strangers who have come on to their properties. If you have spoken to someone who is on your property and you are unsure about their reasons for being there, you should ring 111 immediately.Anyone with information on the 22 May incident should contact Detective Sergeant Shane Pilmer - 430 4589.

The new owners of the Bible Class Camp land at Uretiti are Paul and Maree Glamuzina who operate an earth moving company from Kumeu. Mr. Glamuzina said he bought the land because he likes the area. He has owned property in the Ruakaka Village in the past. He has already engaged a fencing contractor to fence off the 2.6 hectare block north of the Department of Conservation’s Uretiti camping ground and had some of his machinery on site clearing away wild ginger, tobacco weed and pampas. When the Bream Bay News reporter visited on Friday ( 31 May) a glazier was inspecting one of two remaining buildings on the site. Mr. Glamuzina said he didn’t have any definite plans yet as to what he would do on the land. He is considering building a house between the road and the pit left by the sand mine and says he will also build a tractor shed. The weed infested back dune land would provide work for his machinery in the winter when other sites are too boggy.

Whose idea was this? A mud run in tartan is set to be one of the highlights of this year’s Tartan week in Waipu at the beginning of July. Contestants all dressed in tartan will run around a 4km course on a farm in South Road, over jumps, through water, across ditches, up hills and cargo nets, through tyres and lots of mud. “Are you rough enough?” is the challenge on the Mud Run poster. A limit on the number of participants is set at 100, with the person who drew up the poster at least confident the event will “sell out.” Entry costs $30 and there are spot prizes to be won and

a prize for the best tartan outfit. The mud run will be held on Saturday 6 July, start time 10am. Entry forms can be picked up from Waipu Four Square or from Smart Fitness. There will be no gate sales.

The market for the Outdoor Experience is huge as shown in all Destination Northland’s surveys.Locals will benefit from Cycle/Walkways and there will be economic growth for your community, with in-creased visitor numbers. On its own the post war baby boomer market is huge and they are looking for the outdoor experience. Many of them travel in their Motor Homes, looking for Cycle/Walk friendly towns to visit. For the locals there is also the health added benefits as well as great for family outings. Thank you Bream Bay. We are thirty years old and it’s all because of you!Thirty years ago in June 1983 the Waipu Anglican Opportunity opened its doors. The little shop has grown from strength to strength over the years. Trading has only been maintained because of the generosity of so many people in Bream Bay who have donated quality goods to sell. Without you the shop would be unable to carry on.The shop is a charitable trust and donates hugely to local organisations, overseas poverty stricken countries and also helps with funding for the Anglican churches in Bream Bay.

For many years the shop has had streams of volunteers helping to run the business. They have worked so tirelessly and are to be recognised in a special birthday celebration in June. However we are always looking for help and would appreciate anyone interested in this very rewarding position to get in touchThank you volunteers for all you do.A committee meeting, held bi monthly and Chaired by Rev. Des Olney is where the decisions are made as to what organisation will receive donations. Until just recently Shirley Olney, Des’ wife also worked in the shop for many yearsLong may your donations to sell keep coming and long may we be able to give generously to charityIf you would like to be involved please phone; Lois Teague PH: 4328066

It was wacky hair and wheels day at Ruakaka Primary School on Friday 24 May. Children were invited to come to school with the most imaginative hair styles they could come up with and to bring along their bikes, scooters, skateboards and roller blades. At lunch time there was a parade with all the hairstyles on display. This was followed by free sausages for everyone.

Community Patrol effective crime deterent

The new Bream Bay Community Patrol seems to already be having an effect. Senior Constable Martin Geddes said there have been no reports of burglaries in Waipu since the patrol began several months ago. The volunteers carry out regular patrols around the Ruakaka Village, Kepa Road the Lakeside Industrial Park, Waipu and Langs Beach. The group has recently acquired a sign written patrol car, with the idea that its highly visible presence will act as a deterrent. Members patrol in pairs and are trained to be non - confrontational, acting as extra pairs of eyes and ears for the Police. Constable Geddes said more patrollers are still needed and the job is not necessarily a demanding one. “If you can commit to patrolling just once a month, that is fine.”Anyone interested in joining can phone 432 4030 to talk to Constable Geddes or leave a message.

The Whangarei District Council is proposing to change the designation on two pieces of Council owned land adjacent to the Waipu Museum. The 6,900m2 block of land alongside the Waihoihoi River, known as ‘The Glebe’ was purchased by the Council from the Presbyterian Church last year for the sum of $240,000. The funds for this purchase came from the Council’s Reserve Contributions Fund, built up from reserve contribution levies charged when land is subdivided. The glebe land has been leased to the Waipu Centennial Trust Board for “Centennial Museum and historic heritage preservation” until 2047. The museum board pays a peppercorn rental of $1per annum for this lease. The Old Manse, the 1871 building, which was restored by volunteers last year with the aid of a $37,000 Lotteries Board grant and $20,000 raised by the Waipu Music Hall sits on this land and is to be rented out privately until a public entrance to the building is upgraded. The Council has notified its intention to change the status of the Glebe land, which is at present zoned as business and residential to Local purpose site for centennial museum.A smaller 444m2 area of Council land behind the museum,

which is currently designated as local purpose reserve for off street parking will also become local purpose reserve for centennial museum”.This land is also leased to the museum board for $1 a year. Mike Hibbert, the Council’s property officer, said the parking purpose designation didn’t make sense on this land lot, as it is located behind the museum and has a house on it. This house is also rented out by the museum board. The reason given for these changes in the public notices is “This reserve will provide for future preservation of the site for centennial purposes.”Anyone who doesn’t agree with this rezoning has until July 3 to send a written objection to the Council’s Chief Executive Officer. Details of the proposed changes showing maps of the two blocks of land the change involves, can be viewed at the Council front desk at Forum North and at the Council Service Centre in Takutai Place, Ruakaka during office hours and on the Whangarei District Council website.Mr. Hibbert said last week, he would also try to arrange for the information to be available at the Waipu Museum.

Marsden Cove Fishing Club held their 4th annual Ladies fishing competition, Chics @ The Chicks in April. The competition was well supported with 110 ladies setting off from Marsden Cove Marina on the Friday morning, many as early as 04:00hrs, all looking for the heaviest snapper and kingfish and, along with the club’s objective of marine conservation, they were also after the longest tagged snapper and kingfish. When caught the fish were measured, photographed and with-out delay released back into the sea. While the ladies concentrated on fishing for the win-ning fish, the males on board, motored the ladies to their (male) secret fishing spots, cut up the bait, handed out food and hot drinks and no doubt, plenty of fishing advice. In addition to the six trophies the ladies were compet-ing for there were many spot prizes; donated by local and Whangarei businesses; to be won. However, the ultimate prize, which all the ladies had a chance to win, was a $3000 cheque for travel, this was l generously donated by the Dave & Hope Baker of the Waterline Restaurant & Bar, and this year’s winner was Bev McCracken of One Tree Point.Runner-up was Glenda Fife of Waipu, who received a voucher for a weekend at the Copthorne Hokianga donated by Hilary Construction Ltd

Could this be the start of a new city?Almost 10 years after developer Oliver Scott purchased the block of land along One Tree Point Rd., which he persuaded the Whangarei District Council to rezone as the future Marsden City, the first building is under construction there. The building belongs to Louis Berkers, a panel-beater specializing in the restoration of classic cars. Mr. Berkers formerly owned a panel beating company in Whangarei, which still bears his name. The name of his new business

SeniorNet Bream Bay I-Pads and Android TabletsIn response to requests, we will be commencing lessons on these devices early in June. We recently received funding grants from Pub Charity and Oxford Sports Trust to purchase both an i-Pad and an Android tablet for teaching purposes. The popularity of i-Pads and tablets is changing the way the world communicates, and older people are finding them surprisingly easy to understand and operate. ‘Bite Size Learning’Modules or ‘bite size learning’ is another new concept we can of-fer. Busy lifestyles and family commitments often make it difficult for people to commit to 4 week courses. We have new module options available consisting of ‘one off’ two hour lessons devoted to a specific subject or function. These modules do not replace our introductory courses. However, they are ideal for those who are al-ready familiar with all the concepts covered in introductory courses Parts 1 and 2.

Does anyone in the Bream Bay district have memorabilia from World War1?In 2014, 100 years on from the assassination of the Arch Duke Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie by a Serbian terrorist in Sarajevo – the event which triggered World War 1, New Zealand will be remembering the role its citizens played in what was known as “the war to end all wars.”In order to be part of this nationwide centenary, the Waipu Museum will be creating a small exhibition and is looking for letters, diaries, medals, weapons, photographs and other objects from this time. “We would only be wanting to borrow objects for the duration of the exhibition, so no one needs to contemplate parting with precious family heirlooms”, said museum manager Patsy Montgomery. Please phone the museum 432 0746 and ask for Patsy or leave a message with your phone number.

She said there are many thousands of truck artists in Karachi and she is helping them to earn a better living by encouraging them to paint their flamboyant designs on objects such as tables, suitcases, watering cans and wheel barrows etc., which she markets internationally. “It gives them an alternative form of income and some-thing to do if it has been raining for days and they can’t work outside.” Younus was apprenticed to his uncle, also a truck artist, when he was just eight years old, starting off by clean-ing the brushes and the painting rags.He lives with his extended family of four brothers, their children and their wives, totalling 24 people, in a single house in Karachi. Ruakaka South Sewer Extension

The $9.4 million Ruakaka South Sewer Scheme Extension project has finally been completed, subject to minor reinstatement work. The sewerage scheme will provide a long-term wastewater solution for the Ruakaka South community, protecting the environment and public health in the area. The system pumps wastewater from 470 individual properties to the Ruakaka Waste Water Treatment Plant which has been upgraded to handle the increased volume of wastewater. The project is now 100% complete with all of the 470 properties connected to the new sewerage scheme. Only one property owner refused to engage with the project team. Four properties resolved to have connections at their boundary only. The remaining 470 properties agreed to have full connections, which is a 99% connection rate. The high uptake to join the scheme is a real credit to the Ruakaka Community that recognised the need for the scheme and do something constructive about the well-being of their environment. The Ruakaka Community have whole-heartedly embraced the project and already recognise the public health benefits that such a community asset has brought. The Ruakaka Sewer Project has been a resounding success with compliments far outweighing complaints during the 12 month construction period. We know that construction can be disruptive to normal daily patterns and we have endeavoured to minimise any potential disruption. We hope, once the grass has grown, that there will soon be little evidence that we had ever been here.We acknowledge the support of the local Iwi, Patuharekeke, who provided advice on cultural matters and assisted in identifying areas of historical significance.Fulton Hogan would like to thank the greater Ruakaka Community for bearing with our work crews as we briefly interrupted their normally peaceful lifestyle.GENERAL INFORMATIONPump Faults and AlarmsIn the event that the alarm goes off or you notice any irregularity with your new system please ring the Whangarei District Council directly on 430-4200. Whangarei District Council will ensure the correct response is directed to you.Fulton Hogan are still responsible to attend to any faults that may occur for the next 12 months. However, if you have any query please contact Whangarei District Council in the first instance.

Pumice, which has been washing up on the beach of Bream Bay recently is very likely to have come from a major undersea volcanic eruption of the Havre Seamount, near the Kermadec Islands on 19 July 2012. Glenis Rickey, of the Bream Bay Motel, said she has been picking up pumice on Ruakaka Beach for the past two months and was wondering why it had suddenly appeared. She read an article in the Northern Advocate on Wednesday May 29, which explained that lumps of pumice people have been picking up on Bay of Island beaches are almost certainly from a pumice raft produced by the Kermadec eruption. . The pumice Glenis has found is rough and angular, an indication that it has not been in the sea long enough for its edges to have been worn smooth, which suggests that it is likely to have come from the Havre Seamount eruption. Scientists were not aware that the eruption had occurred until a huge floating pumice raft was spotted and photographed by a passenger on a commercial flight between Samoa and Auckland on 22 July 2012. At that time the raft was positioned approximately 1,000 north of Auckland. On 9 August members of the New Zealand Defence Force from an Orion Aircraft sited the raft and it was then approached by thestrategic sealift ship HMNZS Canterbury and samples of low-density pumice were taken. The NIWA research ship Tangaroa then spent 23 days mapping the volcano. The eruption was strong enough to breach the ocean surface from a depth of 1100 metres. It produced clouds of ash visible by satellite. The floating pumice raft it formed measured 480 km in length and 48 km in width, so bits of porous, cream coloured, irregular shaped, light - weight rock could be washing up on our beaches for some time to come.

. The Ruakaka Parish Residents and Ratepayers Association meeting of Tuesday 14 May failed to attract enough people for a quorum of 12, so a date has been set for a second attempt. This time the meeting will be held on Tuesday 11 June. Start time is 7.30pm and the venue is upstairs at the Ruakaka Recreation Centre. Guest speaker will be Paul Dell the Whangarei District Council’s Group Manager District Living (I think this means head of the planning department), who will speak about new developments in the Whangarei District, including the planned upgrade of the town basin and CBD. Warren Daniel, RPRRA secretary, urges Ruakaka and One Tree Point residents to attend. He suggests, “People might like to come along and offer their opinions on the Hundertwasser Centre, the removal of mangroves, the removal of rubbish bins etc.”

Come and offer your opinion on: mangroves, rubbish bins, the Hundertwasser Centre etc.

On Wednesday 22nd May 25 ladies set off on their trip to Okaihau everyone looking forward to playing a nine hole course. Alas it was not to be, a full round was thwarted by Thor the thunderman and Lightning his partner in crime. We managed to slot in six out of the nine but with the weather fast deteriorating we scrambled back into

the clubhouse, where a scrump-tious lunch had been prepared by our Okaihau hosts. This small country club has only ten ladies playing golf but their warm welcome and their hospital-ity was outstanding. Not to men-tion there were also two men who were very efficient in one doing the draw and the other on the bar.Dulcie our tour organizer was great as always, and had us stop-ping off in Paihia on the way home to be given little prizes amid lots of laughter at what we received.A great day out and we look for-ward to the next one next year.

New school boards to be announced this week The new boards of trustees for Bream Bay’s three primary schools and Bream Bay College are due to take office this week. Only two of the four schools held elections. One Tree Point Primary School has exactly five nominations to the five positions of parent representatives on its board, so returning officer Val Klink has declared these people duly elected. The five are: Sandra Currie, Meagan Pascoe, Denis Garner, Grant McCullum and Manu Tuhoro. All of these with the exception of Mr. McCullum served on the previous board. Ruakaka Primary School received just three nominations and these three: Marlene Greene, Aaron Therkelson and James McCullough have been declared elected. The three are all first time board members. The new board will need to co-opt two more parents into its ranks. School boards can have between three and seven parent representatives but the number of parent places on the board must be set before nominations are called. Bream Bay College had seven nominations to the six parent representative places on its board, so conducted an election by postal vote. The seven nominees were: Diane Crocker, Denis Garner, Derek Heiwarei, Graham Hargreaves, Jane McQueen, Mike Swords and Peter Van Cingel. Mr. Hargreaves is the current chairman and Mr. Swords and Mr. Heiwarei are serving trustees, both appointed to fill vacancies last term. Voting papers were due in last Thursday, 30 May, and counting of votes was expected to be completed yesterday, Wednesday 5 June. There were seven nominations to five positions at Waipu Primary School so an election has also been held there. Nominees include current trustees - Rick Stolwerk and Anthony Uphof and five others – Ali McKay, Walter Yeoman, Jason Clement, Sharon Carroll and Russell Plank. Parent representatives on school boards of trustees are elected to a three - Year term. The school principal as well as a staff representative also sit on each school board. Secondary schools (schools with students at year 9 and over) have, in addition, a student representative. Kelly Gillingham was elected at the beginning of this year to this position on the Bream Bay College board.Sitting member Pam Weir was elected unopposed as staff representative at One Tree Point Primary and Glenice Andrews (also unopposed) will continue as staff representative at Waipu Primary. Bream Bay College and Ruakaka Primary have not yet chosen their staff representatives.

the next project. This building once served a dual function as Waipu’s library and hall. It was moved to its present site by a bullock team in 1946. For 60 years it was the Masonic Lodge, until the Waipu chapter was disbanded in 2005. In 2006 the building was sold for a nominal figure to the Museum. One idea is that this building could become a temporary home for a Men’s Shed. A long term plan at the museum is for a purpose - built shed, which could be used for projects such as traditional boat building. However, before restoration can begin. some affordable storage space is needed for many of the articles currently stored in the building.

Jackie Snookes has purchased the Big Tomato fruit and vegetable business from founder and former owner, Wayne Henare. Jackie previously worked in the shop and the decision to buy the business was a spur of the moment one. “We had just sold our house in Paradise Shores. I came to work and told Wayne. He said’ ‘Do you want to buy this business?’ and I said ‘Okay’. She discussed the proposal with her husband and he thought it was a great idea. Jackie plans to continue with Wayne’s policy of buying as much produce as possible from local sources. She will be getting produce in fresh each day, using a purchasing agent and has two helpers – Lisa Mathews, who is new to the store, and Denise Ngakuru, who worked there previously.

The Waipu Art’ n Tartan Wearable Art Awards will be held next on June 27 and 28, 2014.The entry form for the 2014 show will be launched at the Celtic Ball on Saturday 6 July. Patsy Montgomery of the Waipu Museum (the organizers of the show) said, “Our plan for the next Wearable Arts show is to establish a longer time frame by an earlier release of the entry form. This way prospective entrants can have more time to lie awake in the wee small hours puzzling out their next artwork!”A new category will be added to the list entitled The Engine Room. “For the blokes and blokettes amongst us”, said Patsy. “Just to add a wee bit more temptation to anyone still feeling ‘burnt out’ from their last endeavour, we are increasing the size of the prize pool for the 2014 show.”To help boost the prize money the museum is seeking sponsorship and inviting people to become “Friends of Art’ n Tartan.” “Help support this ongoing local endeavour to keep Waipu in the spotlight!”, urges Patsy.
