singles over the past two years to look for predictive correla-tions between streaming behavior and airplay in a single’s second chart week. Bottom line: They do appear to exist. (Ed. Note: Study based on Nielsen Music/BDS and Country Air-check/Mediabase data.) For the first time, it can be submitted that second-week “streams-per-spin” activity (let’s call it “SPS”) is correlated to Country airplay chart outcomes. From August 2015 through last week, singles reaching No. 1 averaged 721 SPS in chart week 2. Those peaking from 2-15 aver-aged far fewer – 486. Singles topping out from 16-30 came in even lower at 458, and those finishing between 31-50 averaged 411. Meanwhile, the average peak of Country singles generating more than 700 SPS in chart week 2 was 12.1, with 57% reaching No. 1. Those producing 301-699 SPS peaked at 15.4 (45% made No. 1), still outperforming charting singles overall (which peak, on average, at No. 18, with 38% going all the way). Singles with 300 or fewer SPS in chart week 2 peaked at 23.8 (22% reaching the top). While a single with low SPS early on can reach No. 1 (and many do), the high or low level of streams-per-spin is also related to the average airplay pace to No. 1. Of the 71 No. 1s from Au-gust 2015 through last week, those delivering 700 or more SPS in their second chart week reached No. 1 in 22.1 weeks. Future No. 1s with 200-699 SPS took 23.5 weeks, and those with fewer than 200 SPS needed 28.5 weeks. And while songs atop the CA/MB airplay chart aren’t always the most-streamed Country singles, there’s a clear pattern here, too: Since August, songs ranking from 1-10 in Country airplay have averaged 3 million streams per week; those from 11-20 averaged 2 million; it’s 935,000 for those from 21-30; about 943,000 for singles between 31-40; and 621,000 for those from 41-50 on the chart. If you think of these as benchmark figures, that new release with three million streams per week is actually already behaving like a top 10 airplay hit. Streaming activity itself shouldn’t be regarded as an infalli-ble statistic, especially when streams-per-spin ratios are low. But Country singles with heavy streaming activity in relation to very early airplay are showing evidence of having the most positive outcomes. They are worth a close look.

Tori Kelly, featured on Chris Lane’s new Big Loud single “Take Back Home Girl,” discusses her most influential music:1. P!nk’s The Truth About Love Tour: This woman was singing live while flying across an arena, doing original choreography, and stripping it down to just her and a piano. Every tour, she makes herself learn a new instrument. She played her most popular songs, even if it was a part of a medley. I left

feeling so inspired and stoked about my next show.2. Crystal Lewis’ Fearless: I grew up listening to a lot of gospel music. I tried to hit every single note and run that Crystal did. I sang “Satisfied” multiple times at singing competitions when I was six. I sang “My Friend” at my fourth grade graduation. 3. Where The Light Is: John Mayer Live In Los Angeles: I studied this album front to back when I was first starting to perform. I love the guitar solos and where the stories are placed. The whole flow of the set list feels amazing.4. India Arie’s Acoustic Soul: This was one of the first artists I listened to when I learned how to play guitar. I loved seeing a female songwriter with a guitar. I had never heard such a soulful spin on acoustic-driven music.5. J Moss: Definitely one of my favorite voices when it comes to tone and doing tricks. I also just love gospel music; how it’s all about Jesus, and has so much hope, and you can also express yourself with your voice and go crazy!• Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I still haven’t gotten around to listening to Adele’s 25 all the way through. I’ve only heard the singles, which are great!• “Important” music you just don’t get: I have a hard time listening to “scream-o.” I appreciate when there’s melody in the song.• An album you listened to incessantly: The J Moss Project by J Moss. I studied every ad-lib on this album. Once I mastered each one, I tried to harmonize with them. It became a fun challenge for me, and still is!• An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Wolf” by Skott is one of the coolest, most unique songs, with beautiful melodies and production.• Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I listen to classical music. Mostly on planes, or when I just want to clear my mind. Current favs are the Lord Of The Rings soundtracks.

After about a year I got drafted, went ahead and enlisted and ended up doing some radio and television in the Panama Canal Zone. When I got out of the service, I worked tem-porarily at an AC station in St. Louis and then went to Little Rock. How did you get to Cincinnati? I was at Country Radio Seminar when it was still out at the Nashville airport and met [then-WUBE PD] Bob English. He and I hit it off famously. I was the PD in Little Rock, so later when things started to go south, I called him. He said, “It’s kind of funny you called. My midday guy is leaving in a couple weeks and I have an opening.” He brought me up here in ’77, just by a chance meeting at CRS. Musically, you’ve seen a lot. The Outlaw movement was just starting to happen when I got to Little Rock. Then you get into the Urban Cowboy era, the late ‘80s and early ‘90s were so explosive and we’re in one of those times now. The music isn’t the same now as when I started, but I feel a sense of pride at having played new material from Merle Haggard and Conway Twitty, and still riding the waves and

exposing new talent. People argue whether things are country or not, but there’s good music out now and you have to adapt. Your on-air delivery has to mature and develop along with the music. That’s been fulfilling. What are your favor-ite memories around the music? The year after I started here Charlie Daniels had “Devil Went Down To Geor-

We're spotlighting one inductee each week, leading up to the Oct. 23 NSHoF Gala. Alabama native Gosdin wrote many of his hits, including "Today My World Slipped Away" (later covered by George Strait) and 1989 CMA Song of the Year "Chiseled In Stone." Gosdin died in 2009 at age 74. His longtime friend and co-writer Buddy Cannon ("Set 'Em Up Joe" and "I'm Still

Crazy") remembers Gosdin, who was known as "The Voice." I became a fan of Vern's the first time I heard his records. I was living in Kingston Springs, TN and one of my neighbors told me he had just moved into a little duplex about a quarter mile up on my street. So the next day, I knocked on his door. I told him I was a songwriter and asked if he'd mind if I brought him some songs. He said, "Bring 'em on!" I had eight songs on this cassette, and a song I'd written with Raleigh Squires and Jimmy Darrell called "Dream Of Me" was the last one on it. Vern listened to about half of all of the songs and then he'd skip to the next one. He got to "Dream Of Me" and just lit up. He played it three or four times. He said, "Son, I've gotta cut that." We got to know each other and decided to try writing together. Vern had been on a couple of independent labels by then. Hank Cochran, who wrote for Tree Publishing, took Vern in to sing for Bob Montgomery, and they got him a record deal on Columbia, with Bob producing. The plan was to have Vern, Hank and Max D. Barnes write the album. Vern pulled me in and said, "I want Buddy to be part of this. We write good together." Vern pretty much exploded with that first Columbia record, Chiseled In Stone. It had "Set 'Em Up Joe" and "Do You Believe Me Now" on it. "Set 'Em Up Joe" was written by me, Vern, Hank Cochran and Dean Dillon at Hank's cabin in Gatlinburg, TN. Hank had this picnic table in his kitchen and we were all sitting there, playing guitars and kicking ideas around. That song just kind of fell out of the sky. I don't remember who said what lines, but 45 minutes later, we had it written. (continued on page 8)

gia.” The original was the “son of a bitch” version and we didn’t play it. One day we get a visit from not just [CBS Records head] Joe Casey but Charlie himself. They came to see why weren’t playing the record. I guess they got the same story from several other stations because it wasn’t long after that visit we got the edited version. George Strait came to the station for his promo tour back in 1980 with no hat. Reba came not long after that. Faith Hill came in barefoot, but she carried her shoes with her. What changes have you seen? We played vinyl when I got here and didn’t switch to cart until two years later. We went to CDs that we dubbed back to carts and announced it as “from compact disc.” (laughs) We went to straight CDs in ‘86 and production was reel to reel with good ol’ splicing

tape. I thought I’d never master digital systems, and now look back wondering how we did it the old way. (laughs) This is the third facility we’ve been in, and I’ve been through nine or 10 companies, but not as many PDs. Tim Closson was here for 14 years, and I was PD at one time. A new GM came in and really wanted an off-air PD. He gave me the choice and I chose to stay on the air. My talent is on air and not program-ming so much, that was in ‘85. I started in middays, went to afternoons and then back, and did mornings for a while. I’ve been in middays for the last 12 years. How long will you keep going? As long as they’ll keep me, I can drive myself and still talk. The thing is, I still really enjoy it. I feel sorry for people that get up in the morning and dread going to work. This has always been a dream and all I ever wanted to do. It’s like the line in the Old Dominion song: “Chase after the dream, don’t chase after the money.” I didn’t care about being paid. Of course that changed when I got married. Had to have some money then. (laughs) People ask me what I’ll do when the time comes to walk away. I don’t know if I’ll be able to completely. I’d like to be able to send it in from home or do some kind of podcast. And I’ve got plenty of stuff on the farm to keep me busy. But I like radio so much. Hubbard is such a great people-oriented company. We have such a great crew here and the station is doing so well. [PD] Grover [Collins] is a great guy to work for. I’d be foolish to walk away from it right now. It’s been a good ride. Reach Hamilton here. –Paul Williams

I was in the studio with Vern a lot while he was recording. I never did play on any of the stuff, but for some reason he always wanted me to be there, hanging out. He took his time in the studio, but he would go over it so much before he got there. Vern was really good on guitar. He had a feel with his guitar playing that fit the feel of his singing. Vern was a genius at arranging

harmony parts. That was exciting to him. He'd change the parts and say, "Try this note in that spot." He understood harmony. I think it was a combination of his background and love for bluegrass and gospel music. He loved to write. A lot of people, when they see an artist's name on a song with other writers, assume the artist really didn't have much to do with it, other than being in the room. But Vern wasn't like that. Every time I wrote with him, he was in the middle of the song as it was being written. He was good. He talked in song titles and hooks. He was always trying to find a clever hook or an idea. He would be excited [about the induction] if he were here. I wish he were here. I miss the old guy. We had a lot of fun. And the music speaks for itself.
