Bridge works begin at GCRNAfter three years of planning andfundraising, work has officially startedon a new bridge in Loughborough tocarry the tracks of the Great CentralRailway (GCR) over the Midland MainLine. The new bridge is part of a chain ofinfrastructure which will ultimatelyallow the two halves of the GreatCentral Railway (GCR in Leicester andGCRN in Nottingham) to reconnect, creating an 18 mile heritage linebetween Leicester and Ruddington.

The project to rebuild the missing linkbetween the two halves of the GreatCentral Railway has become known as'bridging the gap'. The ‘gap’ came aboutwhen the original Great Central lineclosed in the 1960s and structures wereremoved by British Railways.

The new bridge is just over 30m longand will carry a single track of the GCRover four tracks of the main linebetween Derby and London St Pancras. The first phase of works on site willinvolve clearing vegetation andconstructing a site compound. Planningpermission for the bridge, which willcross the railway below in a 'singlespan,' was obtained in 2014.

‘This moment marks the first page of awhole new chapter in the story of boththe GCR & GCRN and for everyone whohas been involved in reunificationproject over the years,’ said PhilStanway, Director at GCRN. ‘To finallysee something that for years was

nothing more than a vision, finallybecoming a reality is testament toeveryone who has helped in any way, however large or small by donatingmoney, time or expertise to get us towhere we are today.’

Our Football ChampionsThis football season a lot of mediaattention has been focused on a certainPremier League football team just downThe Fosse Way.

But you need look no further than ourown village for an amazing story ofsoccer success. Ruddington Village FCare the Notts Senior Premier DivisionChampions! And The Black and Yellows, like The Blues, clinched the title evenbefore the last games were played…

Midfielder Leigh Sissons told us: “Thisseason has been unbelievable. We werecompeting against teams who werepaying players and also had a lot offinancial support from sponsors. Lastseason we finished mid table andstruggled to find any real form.

This season we signed new playersincluding goal keeper Luke Edge, attacker Danny Cocks and defenderKieran Josef. We started the season witha belief that not only did we have astrong squad, but we also had thequality where it was needed.”

Manager David Rimmington said "I tookover Ruddington FC when they had justbeen relegated from the PremierDivision and, on the first attempt; wewon the league and were back in the topdivision.

Over the past 6 years we have grown instrength and attracted new players aswell as keeping the core of the squadwho have been with us for many years. This season showed how far we have

come over the years. We werecompeting against some big clubs but,for the first time in the club’s history, wewon the Notts Senior League PremierDivision. A huge thank you to myassistants Michael Leslie and AidyOsbourne, as well as Steve Wilson whohas continued to support the club andwork wonders behind the scenes."

Anybody wishing to discuss sponsorshipdeals for next season is asked to get intouch by [email protected].

It’s also been a good year forRuddington Reserves who finished 2nd inNSL Division 1 – with a record breaking66 goals in one season from strikerSamuel Dunstan! The EMPAL side wererunners-up in Division 2. WhilstRuddington Ladies’ FC were therunners-up in Division 1 North of theEast Midlands Women’s RegionalFootball League.

Meantime the only disappointment forour title winners is that they will still beplaying in the same division next seasonbecause the current football grounddoes not have all the facilities requiredto play in the next division up.

Welcome to Ruddington. When Snowden Healthcare relocatedto larger premises at the LentonIndustrial Estate earlier this year, andMartindale House on the Green cameup for sale.Steve Ennis, the Founder of Wigwag, leapt at the chance to take over thisbuilding attracted by its history, location and attractive workingenvironment. The company – ‘born’ in 2002 through adesire to create clear, lasting brandswith a keen eye for detail – specialisesin Website Design, Branding, DigitalMarketing, Print Media and SearchEngine optimisation. When I met Steve I just had to ask “WhyWigWag?”

He explained that “WigWag was notoriginally just a wig on a wag”. Althoughthe company is fronted by amischievous dog wearing a pink wig,“the term ‘WigWag’ actually refers to amethod of communication viasemaphore” – a quite fitting metaphorfor a branding agency!

After moving to the Green, WigWag’sdesign team worked to create abusiness card that makes it very clearwhere the Company is based within theheart of our community and wewelcome them to our village.

Shakespeare in Rudd

To commemorate the 400th anniversaryof Shakespeare’s death members ofNottingham Shakespeare Society havebeen invited to the Framework KnittersMuseum.

They will perform short pieces fromnine of his plays interspersed with theoccasional sonnet and interesting factsabout the Bard himself, and “fair play”to them – they are very entertaining.

Some people may think thatShakespeare's “all Greek to me” butthey will enjoy this, and if “they've atongue in their head” they can comeand heckle at Mark Antony and helpraise funds for the Museum'sdevelopment and expansion fund.

(Sayings in quotes originate in the worksof Shakespeare.)
