Welcome ContentsHello and welcome to Issue 79And we start with some important but sad news.

It is a with regret that the branch has decided to not hold a beer festival this year. That is correct, there will be no Wakefield Beer Festival in 2019.Unfortunately falling attendances have meant that the event is no longer financially viable for us to hold.CAMRA beer festivals need your support to survive so make sure you attend the Doncaster and Leeds festivals in June this year, details are on page 15. Both were great events last year.We are going to take the time decide what to do next but we would like to hear from you as to what we should do,Do you want us to hold a beer festival? What do you want from a beer festival? Please get in touch with us and let know as we would like to continue to run a beer festival for Wakefield. We are hoping to run something in November this year at the Red Shed so keep a look out for this on our Twitter, Facebook or in OtoK.Enjoy the issue!

Ackworth from David OatesExcitement is growing in the village with the third beer festival, with a major focus on real ale, set for the beginning of June. It will be the third beer festival in Ackworth since the first one held at the Parish Rooms in March 2018 to raise funds for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). A second festival was run by the Masons Arms in July 2018 to raise funds to help send local toddler Ivy Louise who suffered from Neuroblastoma to America for a vaccination to reduce the risk of it returning. The up and coming festival will be held at ‘Rory’s Return’, Fothergill Avenue, Ackworth.WF7 7PF which is again to raise funds for CRY to heart screen up to a hundred 14 to 35 year olds and other local charities. I can confirm there will be up to 20 different handpumps serving a range of Yorkshire Real Ales, a number of Real Ciders and a wide selection of gins. Two further charity events are running at the Brown Cow and Masons Arms are planned for the next few months. After a lovely Easter period weather wise, and hopefully plenty more of it to come in the spring and summer months, it is worth noting and having a visit or two or three or more to any of the outdoor drinking areas at the Ackworth pubs. Ackworth is also a good place to get a good meal with four of the real ale establishments serving food and the Brown Cow due to start up food again early in May. All seven of the pubs and clubs serving real ale have beer gardens and/or outdoor tables to the front of them.

Ackworth Cricket Club: Brian continues to liaise with Ian Brown from Outgang Brewery in Kinsley, to put on one of the brewery’s real ales at a chosen cricket match or community event in

the summer months. 5 different real ales in a bottle(‘bottle conditioned’), ranging from blondes, pale ales, bitters and stronger dark ales are always available and still only £2.50 each. Part-time opening times are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6:30 and when there is a home match on at the weekends in the summer. The cricket club has the biggest beer garden of all the Ackworth pubs and clubs…….the cricket field itself.Angel: Black Sheep Bitter remains the very popular permanent real ale. The rotating guest

real ale changes on a two to three week basis and is sourced nationally and regionally. Prior booking is always advisable at any time afternoon or evening with the pub, for example, serving 150 plus meals regularly on sundays. The walled beer garden at the front of the Angel is a popular spot for locals to drink and watch the world go by.Boot and Shoe: White Rat from the Rat Brewery and Sharp’s Atlantic Pale Ale are now established permanent real ales. A rotating guest from the third handpump has had a range of nationally sourced real ales on in recent months. The food side of the pub is going from strength, with the Sunday carvery proving particularly popular. An artificial grassed walled beer garden is well frequented on warm days and evenings. (See our Good Meal and Decent Pint feature for more more information).

Brown Cow: The new tenant at the Brown Cow, following Kirsty and Adam’s moving on in mid March after five years plus at the pub, has just appointed her third manager in less than seven weeks. There are two ‘permanent’ real ales, Black Sheep Bitter and

Ossett Silver King and an occasional guest ale. The Cherry Laces Motown Band are performing on Saturday 1st June from 9pm. There is a ‘Big Screen Racing Charity Night’ to raise funds for Alzheimers and Dementia on Saturday 29th June. There are tables to the front of the pub that look out onto the historic village green and sandstone buildings of High Ackworth.

Pub and Club NewsNew start at The Wheel Inn

The Wheel Inn at Wrenthorpe is now open again.New landlord Neil has 40 years experience in the trade and told us that he is here for the long term.A real ale fan it is no surprise the Old Brewery Bitter is spot on here.

Renovation work is taking place on the outside of the pub with new windows being the first priority and expect improvements to be made inside and out over the coming months.

O-to-K is available free on CD as a talking magazine for blind and

partially sighted ale and pub enthusiasts,

anywhere in the UK. This audio version is kindly

sponsored by Brown Cow Brewery.

Ego at the Beverley Arms: Primarily a food serving establishment that serves Yorkshire Blonde and/or a rotating guest from the Ossett Brewery or one of its associated breweries. Outdoor seating is available to the front and a very pleasant, enclosed and shaded beer garden is

also available at the rear of the ‘Bevs’.Masons Arms: Continues with Bradfield Blonde and Brown Cow as its permanent real ales and a guest pump, and occasionally two, which often but not exclusively serves beers from the local Chin Chin, South Kirkby) and the Outgang, Kinsley breweries. Other

guests are both nationally and regionally and sourced. A full day event to raise funds for Breast Cancer takes place from 12 noon on wards on Sunday 14th July. The marquee will be up with live bands, a bouncy castle and BBQs. The Masons has a large enclosed grassed beer garden is to the rear of the pub.

Rustic Arms: Through the regular customers ‘positive response’, the three tried and tested semi- regulars real ales have now become established permanent ones : Timothy Taylors Landlord, Black Sheep Bitter and Ossett Yorkshire Blonde. The Sunday carvery remains

very popular. The idyllic lake side setting of the enclosed beer garden makes the Rustics popular with families and is venue much in demand for wedding receptions.

Focus On - NorthgateContinuing our look around Wakefield City Centre we move to Northgate, not aware there was ever a “Northgate Run” but there are three pubs selling real ale.

Calder & Hops

Formerly The Gate and now refurbished. This is a large venue with plenty of seating and food available. Three cask beers from Marston’s are available and you can see the casks in the glass cellar behind the bar.

Jolly Boys Real Ale Cafe

The newest real ale bar in Wakefield comes courtesy of Barnsley’s Jolly Boys Brewery. A modern cafe style bar with six real ales and also real cider. The line up of cask beers is always changing but Jolly Boys is always available. A great addition to Wakefield, we need more of this type of bar.

College

An excellent proper pub with 2 or 3 beers on from the Marston’s range. Always good quality and reasonably priced too. Food is also available.Like Kirkgate featured last issue there aren’t many pubs but there is a decent selection of beers to be had so give Northgate a try.The Talbot & Falcon does have real ale also but on recent visits when compiling this article I found the handpulls with nothing on them. If this situation changes I will of course provide an update in the next issue, if readers would like to check it out also that would be great.

Next Issue we will cover Glasshoughton.

Beer Styles - Let’s Hear it for MildEvery May CAMRA branches across the country celebrate ‘Mild May’, an initiative to celebrate and highlight the beer style Mild, which was recently under threat of extinction due to a drop in popularity.Mild dates back to the 18th and 19th century and by the mid 20th century was the leading beer in the country.Early milds were quite often much stronger than today, as high as 7.5% in some cases. Today they tend to be under 4% although stronger versions do exist.Mild is usually dark red or brown in colour, partly down to roasted malts or barley although a lot contain only pale malts and get their colour from the addition of caramel. You will get a rich malty aroma and flavour, with hints of dark fruit, chocolate, coffee and caramel, with a gentle underpinning of hop bitterness. Not all Mild is dark however, the Light Mild will be amber in colour with more hop bitterness. At odds with todays hop forward beers it is good when you see Mild on a bar. The best recent example I have tried was Cloudwater Mild in cask. It is fantastic to see such a brewer making this sort of beer and great to see Cloudwater making cask beer again. 3.5% and deep red in colour the beer has a good malt base with subtle hops. They hit the style perfectly. Reading some comments on Untappd about the beer it is clear some are confused by such a beer from this brewer.

I can’t mention Mild without mentioning Tetley. It is the Mild I used to drink, typically in the Black Rock many years ago, and the Cloudwater Mild reminded me a little of it. It is a rare find these days and if you do spot it please let me know. It is a personal

favourite and such a shame that Carlsberg have sidelined it.Another excellent Mild is Banks’s, Mild was popular in the West Midlands and Banks’s was a leading example. Still popular now and in common with Mild from this area it is lighter than

most darker milds being a reddish amber colour. The malt and smoothness is there and if you find it on form, you’ll find yourself having more than one.Greene King can be much maligned, but their XX Mild is a fantastic Dark Mild example. There were some grumbles when it won Champion Mild last year from CAMRA but people really need to get passed the brewer and get to the beer. The Mild is easily Greene King’s best beer, working at the GBBF last year I went straight to the bar it was on to sample it, like so many Milds it is hard to find in these parts. On the Light Mild front, Timothy Taylor’s Golden Best is the most common one you will see. Personally I can’t resist Samuel Smith’s Light Mild, ok so only 2.8% (and yes Keg) but the Duncan in Leeds does a great pint of it at a ridiculously low price. I’d take a photo of it to show you but, well you know, doing that is banned in Humphrey’s pubs now.We have been well represented by our local brewers recently on the mild front. Fernandes do an excellent Light Mild call 60 Shilling and I hope they produce more. Chin Chin gave us the excellent Mild Thing and the new Henry Smith brewery via Revolutions is launching their new 4% Mild which should come out during April.

So there you have it, Mild. Get past your preconceptions about the beer and give it a try. I just hope Cloudwater stay in the cask business and keep producing that Mild. It is easily the best new beer I have tried all year.As the advert used to say “Ready when you are Bob”.

When I moved to Ackworth in the mid 70s I would never have imagined myself writing about good ale in the village. Of the 5 pubs in the village, 4 were John Smith’s keg and the Beverley Arms had keg Webster’s. Both were grim but for me the latter was marginally preferable. (I wonder if

any readers remember the badges with a Courage cockerel And the legend “John Smiths. It’s Fowl”.) The whole village was therefore a beer desert and, even more frustratingly, the Boot and Shoe and the Masons had been tied to the legendary Barnsley Brewery, closed by John Smiths in 1976. It is hard to believe nowadays, but the news in the early 80s that John Smiths were to reintroduce cask was positively thrilling for Ackworth residents. Regular readers of O to K will know that Ackworth is now awash with real ale and that there is quite a varied choice.

In the 70s the Boot and Shoe was certainly not the grandest pub in the village but over the years it has become much smarter, retaining its inviting open fires and its interestingly shaped windows. Much use is made of the “boot and shoe” signage. There are still 2 separate rooms and a central bar and Ackworth’s rather splendid cricket ground is right next door. A customer pointed out to me that things have altered somewhat over the years, as can be seen from the stone fireplace behind the bar. However, no character has been lost. The pub is situated on the main A638 through the village. Buses 485 from Wakefield and 28 from Pontefract stop more or less outside the front door but it is worth pointing out that Ackworth is woefully served by public transport for a village of its size with no service to or from Wakefield in the evenings. For the intrepid, Metro’s Journey Planner might find you a way there via Pontefract or Fitzwiliam.I called in on a Thursday afternoon to find quite a good crowd in. 4 real ales are normally available and White Rat, Old Speckled Hen, Sharps Atlantic and John Smiths Cask were on offer. The White Rat at £3 a pint was in very good order.

A Good Meal And A Decent PintBoot & Shoe, Ackworth.

One of the two rooms has a good public bar feel to it and the other room, on the left as you enter, was laid out with placemats. There is a small stage and there are musical “turns” on Tuesday evenings. The menu is not extensive but there is a decent selection of traditional pub food.

There is a selection of “small plates” at 3 for £15 of £5.25 each, including baked camembert and goat’s cheese tart. Main courses include lasagne, homemade burger and sticky sesame chicken at £9.95. Specials are sometimes available and these are publicised on the Facebook page. There is a Sunday carvery, a “kids’ menu” at £4.95 and there are hot sandwiches at £7.95. I decided to go for the hot roast beef sandwich.

There was a very generous serving of tasty roast beef served in a ciabatta with coleslaw, horseradish sauce and what I would describe as “real proper chips”. It was nicely presented and made a very pleasant early evening meal.

Ackworth now has a good and varied eating and drinking scene and the Boot and Shoe is well worth a look.

Belgium 2019Easter 2019, and it is Thursday 18th April at 9pm. Wakefield CAMRA and friends are once again setting off from the Red Shed to catch the 4.20am Ferry to Calais and then on to Belgium. This year we are based in Mechelen, which is in central Belgium between Antwerp and Brussels. It is a beautiful town, the major feature being St Rumbold’s Cathedral which dominates the Grote Markt (the market square in the centre of town). It is seen below in a photo lit up at night.Europe is experiencing a heat wave over Easter and our weekend is hot sun and temperatures in the high 20’s throughout. We are staying at Het Anker Brewery, they have a hotel within the brewery which is convenient for a group of beer drinkers. The tour of the brewery is excellent, it is good brewery to explore and the view of Mechelen from the roof is excellent. A crisis at work means this writer has to bail out half way through (why at this time I ask!) and following the tour most people can be found in the best bar in town which is Makadam.Het Anker has an excellent bar in which you can get all their beers, many of draught.Saturday is a visit to Het Nest in Oud Turnhout. All the beers have a card playing theme and as we find out Turnhout is the worlds leading manufacturer of playing cards.Founded by a group of hobby brewers, one of which Filip is our guide today, they took up commercially brewing in 2015 and built what is an impressively sized brewery. It features a cellar stacked with wooden casks maturing beer and there are expansion plans. The beer range is impressive and excellent, these are a modern craft brewer with big plans. The afternoon is spent in Tilburg in the Netherlands, mostly in the Cafe Kandinsky which has, and maybe it was just for us, British beer on draught. But no one drinks that, and I make sure all the beers are from the Netherlands.Sunday is a visit to Remise 56 in Beringen. This is a brew pub in a converted tram shed, Patrick is an engaging host with a long history in the trade. He submitted plans to convert the tramshed to the local council and in a competition of plans

won out and in 2016 opened his brewery and brassiere. The food here is excellent, there are just 4 beers but all are excellent. The Superpils is very good, but the dry hopped (with local hops)version is even better. It was really nice to get the following message from Patrick “What an honour to welcome and host the Wakefield branch of the Campaign for Real Ale association, straight from the UK! Always nice to get recognition from very knowledgeable beer lovers”. CAMRA’s Belgium Beer Guide is correct “they know what they are about”, it is an excellent place.Remise 56 also takes the honour of being the 100th Belgian brewery that Wakefield CAMRA has visited. On Monday we take quite a trip to Abbaye de Brogne in Saint-Gérard. This small Brassiere with Microbrewery is in the former Abbey. All the beers are organic and there is a Blonde, Brune, Christmas beer and Session IPA to try. It is a wonderful place and well worth checking out.The afternoon is spent in Namur, mostly in Barnabeer which features over 20 draught beers and countless bottled beer.

Bradbury's Beermat ColumnThe mat featured this time is from Wakefield Branch’s newest brewery. Luddite Brewery which is based at the Calder Vale Hotel in Horbury Junction which recently re-opened after an extensive refurbishment by the owner, Michael Portman.

The mat is double sided with “The Calder Vale Est. 1874” on the reverse. The brewery was launched on the 9th of April and the three core beers, 1812 Bitter, Smashing Saaz and Smashing EKG were on sale alongside two Guest Beers. The 1812 was my favourite as it is a traditional brown beer which is to my taste. The pub has retained its multi-roomed layout unlike a lot of other pubs which have been opened out subsequently losing all the character they once had. One room houses the bar servery, another has a serving hatch and the third is situated at the rear of the pub and is ideal for meetings. There are stone flagged floors throughout with and the decorations are simple but effective. We will be having our August Branch Meeting there, all are welcome.

All of us at Wakefield Branch wish Michael, his family and staff all the best for the future and I, personally look forward to many more visits to the “Calder”.

Cheers, Albert.

On The Handpull No. 66 - The Mallet The Mallet is fantastic piece of equipment any cellar person can use. Basically because you get to hit things with it.Here is mine “Mark’s Tickling Stick”. It is big, wooden and is very good at whacking in taps.

Gifted to me by my friends at the GBBF it sees use at beer festivals. The mallet is a type of hammer, with nearly always a wooden handle (but not always), some will have a rubber heads also.

It is used to to vent the beer at the top of the cask by putting a hole into the shive and drive a tap into the cask through the keystone on one side of the cask.

Alternatively, if the cask is upright with the Keystone at the top a Widge is used.

A whodunnit set mostly in a London pub called the Cap & Bells, all happening one night just before Christmas. A race-course bookie turns amateur detective along with the staff and regulars of the pub, to unravel a murder mystery and prove the innocence of the barmaid's fiancé, who is due

for the gallows the next day for allegedly murder-ing an old lady with a spanner. You’ll also see Judy Campbell, who once enchanted Noël Coward and was the mother of the heavy-breathing Jane Birkin. "Saloon Bar" is the real gem of Volume 10. A real slice of British life in 1940, with a crackling performance from Gordon Harker, worth buying for this film alone. Look out for Martin Clunes' dad Alex as Eddie Gray!).The rest of the titles show the range

of movies made at Ealing. Both "Divided Heart" and "His Excellency" stand up in their own right but In the other film "Let’s Be Famous" you can see Betty Driver from Corra when she was young and pretty. You can buy the dvd from around a fiver on t'in-terweb. Britain’s only existing pub with that name is on the Buttershaw Estate in Bradford if it hasn't been demolished, and it was a street location in "Rita, Sue and Bob, Too", although The Beacon was the main pub.

Annabel Smith

©Annabel SmithAnnabel Smith is founder of BeerBelle, a company specialising in delivering beer training, beer events, and a consultancy service to brewers and [email protected] @CaskAnnabel

A few days ago, I re-read George Orwell’s essay ‘The Moon Under Water’. Don’t think I’m getting all high brow here, I had to read it for a training course I was on. For those of you who have never read it, Google it. It takes five minutes to read and, in a nutshell, it’s Orwell’s vision of his perfect pub. At points it’s quite dated (it was written in the 1940’s) but it did get me thinking what ‘The Moon Under Water’ would look like today. So here’s my take on it.When walking into the pub, the bar staff look up as each new customer walks through the door, and acknowledge who’s next in turn, rather than giving priority service to the regulars. Every drinker says please when they order a beer, and the bar staff thank them as they hand over their change. Even better, they say “thanks, love”. (It’s a Yorkshire thing). The beer is served in the right glass, not a Strongbow glass, and as it’s passed across the bar the server holds it round the base, not round the rim. It’s topped up automatically if there is too thick a collar of foam. There are a range of colours, strengths and styles of beers to choose from, not a row of blonde ales which all taste suspiciously similar. If the barrel is near the end, or the beer isn’t quite right, a replacement is offered graciously, without the dreaded confrontation such as “no one else has complained about it” or “it’s meant to be like that”.The boorish customers who click fingers, tap money on the bar, wave notes in the air to attract the attention of the bar person are absent. As is the joker who shouts “Sack the juggler!” whenever a glass is dropped and thinks it’s the most original, hilarious comment ever to be uttered. (It’s not).

Drinkers are talking to each other rather than looking down at their phones, or using an app on their mobile to order their beer from the bar. Strangers are striking up conversations with each other based on the beer they’re drinking, where they’ve been, or the dog sat under the table on a lead.On a cold day, all the fires are lit way before opening time, and on a hot day, the beer garden is an extension of the pub: clean tables, empty ashtrays, and tidy. No abandoned fridges, defunct motorbikes or general junk.

The lighting in the pub changes as the day progresses. Natural light, bright enough to read a newspaper at lunchtime, dimmed as the evening sets in, so faces don’t look like an over exposed photograph. Music is in the background, subtle enough to take the edge off a quiet session, and loud enough to create a great atmosphere without killing the conversation. The menu is designed to complement the beer: no ‘jus’, just sauce; no slates, just plates. It’s fairly priced, with dishes which flex with the seasons (and the salary band). This pub is a walkable distance from home in good weather, or a short bus ride away if it’s raining. It’s not fashionable, or themed, and it doesn’t attract the louts, or the anti-social. It’s my perfect pub, my Moon Under Water. What’s yours?

As a proud Yorkshire brewery, we could not let this opportunity slip by” says Ryan Truswell Brewery Manager.Look out for the work Jack and Old Mill Brewery will be doing over the next year.
