ATK Audiotek has selected JBL Professional’s VTX A12 and A8 line array speakers to deliver premium live sound reinforcement for upcoming primetime events, including the Super Bowl Halftime Show, the Grammy Music Awards Ceremony and the Screen Actors Guild Award Show. ATK Audiotek specializes in providing audio systems for live television shows and major events like The Voice, Jimmy Kimmy Live!, the Super Bowl, the Grammy Awards and more. They also have a thriving integration business, and install audio systems for some of the world’s leading tech and retail companies. In order to raise the bar from previous successful Super Bowl and Grammy Awards shows, ATK plans to deliver premium audio quality at these upcoming major events with

ATK is currently installing and fine-tuning every aspect of the sound systems to be used at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the Super Bowl, one of the most ubiquitous entertainment events in the world. The VTX A12’s ease of deployment plays a huge role in enabling the ATK team to quickly deploy the speakers on and off the field for the highly anticipated Halftime Show featuring Maroon 5, Big Boi and Travis Scott.

In addition to the Super Bowl Halftime Show, ATK Audiotek will also rely exclusively on VTX A12 speakers to provide premium full-range sound reinforcement for the Grammy Awards on February 10 at the Staples Center. ATK also supplied a VTX A8-based sound reinforcement system for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which took place on January 29 at the intimate Shrine Auditorium.

industry-leading JBL VTX Series A12 and A8 line array speakers. “The VTX A12 is the best speaker JBL has ever made, and it plays a significant role in our current inventory,” said Michael MacDonald, President, ATK Audiotek. “Two of the most important aspects of a speaker’s performance are coverage and a flat response. The A12 is consistently excellent both of these areas. We’ve added 192 A12 speakers to our inventory since the 2018 Grammy Awards, and they’ve been warmly welcomed by our engineers and technical staff.”

‘t Spant was built in 1969 and was established as the first theatre in Bussum, a small town 30km from Amsterdam. It was refurbished and renamed simply Spant in the 2000s, before being bought by its managing director Paul Haighton and financial director Bert Dijkstra. It is unusual amongst theatres in the Netherlands as being a solely commercially-operated venue and prides itself on its CO2 neutral footprint. Spant has two theatres, the 780-seat Podium 1 and 275-seat Podium 2. It hosts around 100 theatre performances and 200 conferences and other events each year. These include many well-known Dutch productions and corporate events for local, national and international businesses. Most productions use Spant’s own technical inventory. For many years, the sound in Podium 1 was mixed on a Yamaha M7CL digital mixing console and on an 01V96 in Podium 2. Both were always very reliable so, when upgrading the audio system was planned for the end of 2018, Spant technical manager Marcel Scheewe and head of sound Jan-Willem van Vorst had no hesitation in choosing Yamaha again. Marcel, Jan and sound engineer Frans Grollé looked at a number of

Dutch Yamaha dealer Sales-All supplied and helped to install the Yamaha equipment and Dante cabling through the building to the centrally-located switches, which makes it very easy to connect the desired console(s) and I/O at any location throughout the building. “We were also very impressed with the Dan Dugan auto mixer, which makes mixing live speech very easy at congress events,” adds Jan-Willem. “As we host so many different events, having three desks from the same series makes it a very flexible system, allowing us to quickly and easily set up the sound for any situation.”

options, choosing a system of two Yamaha QL5s and a QL1, two Rio1608-D2 and one Rio3224-D2 I/O units and two SWP1-16MMF switches. The consoles and I/O units are used interchangeably throughout the Spant complex on a fully redundant Dante network. This provides the flexibility for the mixing system in any space to be as simple or as complex as each event demands. “Choosing the QL series was easy, because the previous Yamaha consoles were so reliable and the workflow of all Yamaha mixers is familiar to sound engineers worldwide, meaning our own staff and visiting engineers would be equally at home on them,” says Jan-Willem.

The item that impressed them the most was the E-IPA IP interface card. “With this newly released card, we can install an IP transceiver at any time and in any location within a network-accessible area. Show da Virada is Brazil’s greatest end-of-year event, and Event Audio Systems, directed by Kleiton Carlos, was contracted to design and supply a sound system that could rise to the technical challenge that a show of this magnitude implies. With the help of Fernando Nanao, DAS Audio Technical Manager for Latin America –on-site to provide support during the four-day system set up and five-and-a-half hour show– the team curated a sound system using DAS Audio’s proprietary software and an extensive amount of gear from the manufacturer’s product catalog. The setup designed by Event Audio Systems included a combination of 40 AERO-40A powered and 24 AERO-20A high-performance line arrays, flown in clusters for the main PA. These systems include the manufacturer’s proprietary DASaim™ software to optimize the complex acoustic interaction between loudspeakers and

Bring Me The Horizon kicked off their First Love World Tour with performances in Germany, before ending the European leg in the UK with two gigs at London’s Alexandra Palace. Miles Hillyard from SSE Audio Group oversaw the implementation of the KSL and GSL Systems for the tour, specifying it to complement SSE Audio’s d&b GSL package. “We rigged the KSL as side hangs, to complement the larger GSL main hangs. The cardioid characteristics of the KSL and GSL were most notable, and the modern drivers make the System sound really transparent.”

The Korean K-Pop phenomenon celebrates itself every year at the Golden Disc Awards, staged in Seoul. Audio production provider for seven years, Way Audio has found the means to tame the huge space that is the Gocheok Sky Dome, using a large modular PA system, the STM Series from NEXO. Designed to evoke the shape and movement dynamic of a baseball, the Sky Dome’s structure presents huge acoustic challenges for sound reinforcement. However, local production rental house Way Audio has serviced many large concert events at Gocheok, with Yun Cheol Lee tailoring his system designs to perform perfectly in the huge stadium. “The reverberation time and reflections created inside the venue, with its high roof, causes problems for audio

The Rainforest World Music Festival in Kuching, Malaysia, has been attracting large audiences from all around Southeast Asia and beyond. The main performances hit the two stages erected by Kuching-based rental company Projection House which has deployed the d&b V-Series at the festival. “Let’s say one band is performing on the Jungle Stage,” Kevin Phua at Projection House explains, “so this is when we’ll get everything ready for the next band on the Tree Stage before the turnaround. Each band performance is estimated at forty five minutes, so that’s the time we have to line things up and keep the music flowing.” Both stages used twelve elements of the V8 3-way, passive line array loudspeaker, supported by four V12s; one stage had twelve V-SUBs and the other used eight J-SUBS – flyable

Technical Director of the festival Niall Macaulay is very clear in his mission. “My job as a sound engineer is about bringing happiness to people,” he says. “d&b provides the main PA for the two stages addressing an arena of around 7,000-8,000 people, and we use the V-Series for the tops and subs except for one stage which has J-Series subs. I find that d&b’s product range has a consistent sound across the range, and the flexibility to be able to mix and match products from throughout the catalogue and still achieve an even result.” Projection House first bought a V System in 2015, adding another the following year specifically to cater for the Rainforest Festival. “I believe we were the first company in Borneo to invest in d&b,”

adds Phua, “and we’re still the only company using d&b in Sarawak. The organizers of the Rainforest Festival are very happy with the quality of the d&b V System; it really is ideally suited for this event, so we’re glad we made the right choice by investing in ‘V’ for the rainforest. We also look forward to developing our understanding of the System further in partnership with the d&b Asia-Pacific team in Singapore.”

Back in 2001, leading theatre sound design and rental company Orbital was one of the first to invest in Yamaha’s groundbreaking PM1D digital mixing console, building up a large inventory that powered major musicals across the globe. With the firmware of the RIVAGE PM10 system recently updated to include Theatre Mode, the company has again invested in Yamaha, with an initial two PM10 systems put straight to work on the festive pantomime season. “For the market we work in, it’s incredibly important that you should be able to turn the console on, know it’s going to work and be able to completely trust it every day,” says Olly Steel, Orbital’s head of sound design. “We used PM1D and other Yamaha digital consoles for many years and, recently, had been looking at a new system to support our design projects. However, while the reliability and many other features were in place in the early firmware versions of RIVAGE PM10, it wasn’t quite there with the theatre facilities that we needed. Now that has all changed, and in brilliant ways.” “It made a lot of sense to invest in RIVAGE PM10 at this time of year,” says Olly. “Because of the volume of work over the panto season,

Capital Sound completed one of their more unusual mini-tours when they provided sound reinforcement, including Martin Audio’s MLA, for three shows by Japanese ‘android diva’ Hatsune Miku. Since the London date was the densely populated Kensington Olympia, a hugely noise sensitive site, it was obvious that only MLA would offer the level of containment necessary while reaching the considerable levels required by the Japanese production. In addition to Olympia, Capital supported the tour at La Seine Musicale, Paris, and Cologne’s Lanxess Arena. The main PA comprised 11 MLA elements and an MLD Downfill each side, with 12 MLX subs along the front. Side hangs consisted of 8 MLA Compact per side and 4 DD12s perched on the subs provided front fills, while 2 Martin Audio XD12s on stands were used for talkback. At Olympia, where no side hangs were

Sweden’s professional ice hockey team, Luleå HF, is enjoying new excitement at its home games, following the implementation of an impressive €4 million audio-visual experience at the Coop Norrbotten Arena. A key part of this state-of-the-art package, installed by the Bright Group Sweden AB, is a high SPL NEXO GEO line array system. “It has been a huge success,” says Bright Group Sweden’s Director of Installation John Wettersten. “The sound was one of the most appreciated parts of the projec. Over a five-month period, Bright’s audio installation specialist Drew Black worked closely with NEXO’s Carole Marsaud to perfect the system design, from initial modelling on NEXO’s proprietary NS-1 software suite, to final installation. “The main system uses 12 hangs, each with 4x GEO S12 cabinets,” says Black. “These have been placed in the roof at varying heights around the rink, so we didn’t compromise sight lines, and throw to about 22 metres at the furthest point. Also in the Loop are four clusters of 4x RS18 18” subwoofers, which run in cardioid mode. These are hung in the centre to achieve the most even coverage.” Bright created custom-made flying frames and rigging which enabled the engineers to pan and tilt the arrays

For every two arrays, a NXAMP4x2Mk2 was used, all of which were located on an old camera platform high under the ceiling. The moment Garth Brooks made his appearance in front of 84,000 fans at the sold-out, first ever concert at Notre Dame stadium, there was no doubt something historic was in the air – that and a whole lot of cold rain, wind and even a little snow! Dan Heins, FOH engineer for

The Notre Dame concert used a total of 96 i218 array cabinets and 48 i212 cabinets in the main array hangs, all eight hangs with identical equipment. The layout for the stadium effectively utilized two different array hang configurations depending on whether the array was facing the sideline or the end zone. Josh Sadd, sound designer for the tour, said, “The Notre Dame stadium, while obviously great for football, has a bright future for concerts. The rake of the seating is very amphitheater-like which is acoustically very musical sounding – a great feature!”

Garth since 1989, described it, “By four o’clock in the afternoon, just hours before the show, we still didn’t know if the concert would go on. We ended up doing soundcheck with the PA on the ground! The wind finally let up, so we were able to raise the speakers. Part of

the show’s magic was the star-shaped stage with a 360-degree rotating centerstage – a theater-in-the-round concept where Garth moves freestyle around the periphery playing to each side of the stadium.

An IP-based Lawo mc²96 console has been installed in Bregenz, Austria, to support sound reinforcement and directional listening systems for a sold-out run of “Carmen” at the annual summer Bregenz Festival. Sound designer Alwin Bösch and sound engineer Gernot Gögele shifted from the Lawo mc²66 production console to a Lawo mc²96 grand production console. Despite the differences between the two consoles, many settings of the mc²66 could be directly transferred to the mc²96.

The recent Skudefestivalen -one of Norway’s largest coastal culture festivals - marked the first European outing for EM Acoustics’ new HALO-A large-format line array system, where it made

support from EM Acoustics’ Norwegian distributor, Norstage. Livepro’s system engineer, Geir Larsen, has become the first adopter of HALO-A in Europe, and for good reason. “This is a huge improvement over the sound systems we’ve used in previous years,” he said. “I’m really impressed with the way it sounds, even in a tent which is not the friendliest environment for a concert.” Larsen elected to deploy left and right ground stacks of four HALO-A two-way line array elements supported by three MSE-218 subwoofers each side, powered by four DQ20 advanced system amplifiers.

Peripherals remained unchanged, so there was no need to repatch the Bregenz directional listening system (64 inputs to 128 outputs, 800+ loudspeakers) that supports an immersive experience for the audience. On Justin Timberlake’s Man Of The Woods world tour, his two live sound engineers, Andy Meyer and Paul Klimson, rely on DiGiCo consoles supplied by Clair Global, the touring sound reinforcement provider. “The SD7 offers an input count, flexibility, and sonic clarity that is unsurpassed by other platforms,” opens Andy Meyer, whose DiGiCo SD7 console is receiving 200 input paths at FOH, with 138 outputs. “I’ve got snapshots for changes that I want to make, and I fire it all off of time code. I used to do it manually, and I have foot switches to do it, just in case.” The snapshots are starting points, Meyer explains, as throughout the performance he's making slight adjustments: “I don’t EQ the system, I let the system be the system, and I fix it in snapshots. If there’s a frequency bugging you, you find out what it is, and then you put a snapshot in to clean it up - you learn those things over time, so frequency-wise, I’m pretty set; it’s level-wise that I’m doing the work in real-time.” Meyer likes to be hands-on with Timberlake's vocal: “you can't just leave that up,” he insists. “That's because everyone is everywhere, so I have to make changes around that. Almost every word and note performed at the inaugural All Together Now (ATN) festival was heard through a d&b audiotechnik system supplied by Dublin’s Session Hire, who were charged with handling the audio and visual requirements at the event. Session Hire sales director, and Eddie’s son, Adam Ashe Browne explains, “Every stage featured a d&b system, from compact T-Series and Y-Series in smaller venues to the flagship GSL system in the main arena, where we had to deliver coverage 50m wide and 100m deep.” “They were all excited to use the system,” recalls Will Fitzpatrick, system tech throughout ATN, “and everyone left very happy.

of its highlights, particularly when delivering multiple acts over a festival weekend. “The GSL arrived from Wigwam via Session Hire and we had it from truck to flown incredibly quickly. “The workflow is a huge plus for me,” he nods, “d&b’s ArrayCalc simulation and R1 Remote control software is fantastic to use and the ArrayProcessing (AP) algorithms work so well that it really simplified the process of delivering even, consistent coverage throughout the arena. Having your various AP slots, where you can redirect power exactly where you need it, gives amazing control over the system.”

Even at high SPLs the SL-Series never seems under pressure, never loses stability or clarity. And everyone was stunned by the cardioid pattern of the system and how well controlled it is, even in the low frequencies. There’s a fantastic punch and focus to the sound as a result.” Fitzpatrick is quick to point to the workflow of the SL-Series system as another

Norwegian singer-songwriter Sigrid has completed her biggest UK tour – with the last show taking place at the O2 Academy in Brixton, London – supported by an Allen & Heath dLive system. The tour utilises a multi-surface set-up comprising a dLive C3500 on FOH (supplied through BCS Audio) and a dLive C1500 on Monitors (purchased through Benum Norway). A DM32 MixRack fitted with a gigaACE module is located on stage and controls both FOH and MON duties, with the configuration providing 64 channels to both FOH and MON engineers with discrete processing. Additionally, a DX168 expander is used to increase the analogue I/O count onstage. “We originally chose the C1500 surface due to its fly-in possibilities and the fact it carries the same powerful engine that the larger surfaces use. such as Dante and gigaACE – for the multi-surface solution.” Sigrid continues to reach new heights, with multiple sold-out shows and regular major festival appearances. Earlier this year Sigrid was announced as the BBC’s Sound of 2018. Next year will also see her perform alongside acclaimed artists including George Ezra and Maroon 5.

Halsvik continues, “The ease of dLive is great and I love the opportunities for system expansion. Having the possibility to add analogue inputs easily via the DX ports has proven very valuable too and is one of the main reasons we purchased our dLive C1500! Also, being able to use just one MixRack and still have a full Mon-split is essential for us and then being able to just add a split to a second rack and a mixer without any problem, is incredible!”

EQ´s are also great features! We then acquired the DM32 MixRack because of its I/O slots and easy use with both Dante and digital splits,” comments Jan Thomas Halsvik, FOH engineer. “For Sigrid’s shows, we usually just bring our C1500 and DM32, however for this run we needed an extra C3500 surface due to the size of the tour and I wanted more control at FOH on less layers.” Monitor engineer, Sigri Hovde adds, “The thing I like the most about the dLive (apart from the obvious sound quality) is the flexibility and seamlessness of adding different racks, modules or option cards –

Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee is one of the most prestigious music venues in the world. In partnership with Opry Entertainment Group, JBL, and Yamaha, AV integration firm Clair Solutions recently completed a significant overhaul of the Ryman’s sound reinforcement system. “We installed the previous sound reinforcement system over a dozen years ago,” said Dan Heins, regional vice president at Clair Solutions. JBL’s new VTX Series A12 System was the top choice, but the Ryman engineers wanted to hear the system in-place before fully committing. PRX815 and PRX812 models. If customers desire, they can also choose a preset with neutral EQ settings. In addition, on all PRX800-series loudspeakers, except for subwoofers, the line level input sensitivity has been adjusted to provide a greater range of gain control. Customers can also revert input sensitivity back to the previous default setting. “Through extensive customer research, we’ve learned that the two most common changes that customers make to JBL PRX800 settings are to boost the bass EQ and to turn up the input gain,” said Craig Lambrecht, Director Solutions and Marketing, HARMAN Professional Solutions. “PRX800 are already the loudest portable PA solutions

in their class. With the new V2 update, customers will immediately notice a warmer and fuller tone that shows off the full-range capabilities of the PRX800 without needing to adjust the EQ or touch the gain knob, and they will be particularly impressed when playing bass-heavy music like pop, hip hop or EDM.” Availability The V2 firmware update is easily installed on PRX800 series speakers via the latest versions of the PRX Connect App for Android and iOS, now available through Google Play and Apple App Store respectively. In addition, beginning this month, HARMAN will begin shipping JBL PRX800-series loudspeakers with the new V2 Firmware pre-installed.

Building Information

Modelling With the increasing importance of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the widespread adoption of Revit software, d&b audiotechnik has made available Revit files that allow consultants, architects and system integrators to include d&b loudspeakers in a Revit based BIM process at any stage of a project. d&b Revit files provide photo-realistic detailed 3D data for each loudspeaker, including texture, non-branded renderings to support a neutral tender process, and the option to visualize Special color versions. Where applicable, loudspeakers can be pitched, rotated and panned according to the specified installation. A line array workflow similar to ArrayCalc, supports up to twenty four loudspeakers.

The IEC mains power inlet can be replaced with a gland module and screw terminals for fixed installation, and a DC 12V backup supply is also provided.

Both DT168 and DT164-W offer Allen & Heath’s acclaimed preamps, complete with 96kHz converters for best-in-class sound quality over Dante, plus Primary and Secondary ports for daisy-chain or redundancy through secure EtherCon connectors. Both new products are compatible with Allen & Heath’s DM and CDM MixRack / MainFrames, and with SQ series mixers. Also new are two ‘super’ Dante cards for the Allen & Heath flagship dLive system, offering 64x64 and 128x128 channels respectively of 96kHz Dante audio (switchable to 48kHz). A first at this price point, these powerful options respond to user demand for a high channel count, high sample rate Dante solution in recording, virtual soundcheck and digital split applications.

DiGiCo is delighted to announce the expansion of the DMI-AMM (Automatic Mic Mixing) card onto DMI enabled SD-Range consoles, the A3232 DMI for S-Series and the initial steps of the planned integration of KLANG: Technologies immersive in-ear mixing into the SD-Range. The DMI-AMM allows up to 64 channels of automatic mic mixing on both DiGiCo’s flagship SD7 Quantum and the SD12 console. Designed in direct response to requests from the corporate market, the DMI-AMM will benefit any production where complex vocal mic setups are in use. Insertable on any input channel, be it local or rack I/O, the DMI-AMM is designed to assist engineers with multiple spoken voices. It is seamlessly incorporated into the console’s user interface, allowing a continuous workflow that does not hinder the operation of the console.

In both the SD7 Quantum and SD12 consoles, the DMI-AMM offers 64 channels of processing which can be used in any console input channel. There are two independent AMMs implemented by the DMI-AMM, known as AMM-A and AMM-B, with channels assigned to either A or B or neither. This means that two separate events can run simultaneously on the same console without one interfering with the other. The A3232 DMI card from the 4REA Range is now incorporated into the S-Series consoles. This I/O expansion allows for the 4REA4 I/O to be directly connected to the S-Series, widening the I/O possibilities. As part of this upgrade a newly launched S21-Stage48 and S31-Stage48 system are being offered with 48 Mic inputs from stage via three 168 Stage racks.

Yamaha's RIVAGE PM series digital mixing systems are receiving another significant upgrade with RIVAGE PM V3.0. This firmware update adds a number of refinements, including the new DaNSe dynamic noise suppressor plug-in, Mix to Input routing and other workflow improvements. Designed to improve speech clarity for theatrical and broadcast applications, DaNSe is an innovative new algorithm which learns the noise characteristics of a source and then automatically removes the noise without altering the sound of the intended voice or instrument. It effectively deals with noise picked up from air conditioning, moving lights and video screens. It will also help with unwanted bleed from cymbals into a live vocal mic, from traffic noise picked up by an outside broadcast and many other situations.

PRO AUDIO INTERNATIONAL

TECHNOLOGY

Mix to Input routing allows more flexible signal flows for sound engineers. For example, a monitor engineer can create a subgroup for drum compression, then route it back to an input and forward it to several IEM mixes. Alternatively, so-called ‘Stem’ mixes can be created for different orchestral instruments and choir mics, before sending them to effects and dynamics processors and creating a final mix. New features of RIVAGE PM V3.0 include port names, where every I/O device, port and module card can be given a name which is visible on the console surface,

following the input patching.

This includes Dante device names and also all I/O ports in the TWINLANe fibre ring. When a RIVAGE PM10 can host over 2,000 mic pre-amps and even more outputs via dual TWINLANe rings and a Dante network, port names will make patching operations much easier. An attenuator has also been added to the EQ section, allowing finer tuning of levels to compensate for EQ gain adjustments. This attenuator is also included in Theatre Mode, allowing the level to be adjusted and saved in the ‘Actor Library’, just in case a new actor is significantly louder or quieter than a previous actor playing the same role. There are around 20 further improvements and shortcuts. Highlights of these include ‘Banks’ for Global Paste shortcuts; Meter Bridge view for Custom Fader Layers and DCA Assign presets in Theatre Mode. Insert Effect editing is also included in the updated RIVAGE PM StageMix iPad app.

It offers an attractive interface and ease-of-use, consequently accessing the systems is faster and more intuitive than using a conventional physical control. For example, from the home screen the user can access the MUTE and SOLO functions of each group without even entering the parameters window. Among many other handy functionalities, DASlink GM can also assist to identify the cabinets being adjusted thanks to a blinking function.
