THANK YOU TO YOU ALL
How wonderful it will be to have all our students back on-site next Tuesday 9th June. We
have missed them and sharing in their perpetual excitement and wonder. The love, laughter,
creativity and imagination of our young charges is like a fountain of vitality and this has been
absent with our students being off-site. They are the soul of our school community. They
galvanise and energise us.
During the last few months we have all experienced considerable changes to our lives and
faced some significant challenges. We have all had to cope with managing a situation for
which we have had no prior experience. It is necessary to reflect on what this time, when
schools were empty and schooling was occurring at home, has meant for us all.
May, 20
No one can argue that our healthcare workers are our “Number One Frontline Workers”.
They are courageous, everyday heroes who are prepared to risk their lives whilst helping
others live and there aren’t enough words to adequately describe the relief we all feel
knowing they are there. We are all filled with awe and gratitude.
I am in awe also of our teachers in our school, who have shown innovation and persistence to
ensure learning does not stop, despite a changed learning environment. They have risen to
the challenge. What our school has achieved during these past months has been absolutely
magnificent. What our parents have achieved at home has been inspirational! Many parents
have been supervising their children, working from home themselves and endeavouring to
maintain a semblance of normality for the family at the same time. Our teachers have
endeavoured to maintain the stability of our communities during this time by “touching base”
regularly with families.
Teachers are now the lynch-pin to Victorian Government and all of Australia moving
forward, reigniting the economy. Teachers are without question now front-line workers in a
landscape where the “shifting-sands” that still exist, bring risks we would never have dreamt
possible and in unpredictable time economically, politically, environmentally and spiritually
for us all.
Our teachers have shown they are people of integrity, people of significance, professional,
decent and capable human beings, generous of heart and spirit, we would all agree. To see
them reunite face-to-face with their charges, two weeks ago was most rewarding, albeit only
our Preps and Junior School students. We can hardly wait to see the rest of the students back
on-site next week.
Each day is unfolding a realization of the importance of a school community to so many
families’ health and well-being and Tuesday 9th June we will commence the path back to
normality or part thereof. We will all continue to do what we do best… students, parents and
teachers – together.
I THANK YOU ALL – PARENT, STUDENTS AND STAFF – WELCOME BACK!
RECONCILIATION WEEK
Last week was National Reconciliation Week. It was the twentieth anniversary of the
reconciliation walks of 2000, when people came together to walk on bridges and roads across
the nation and show their support for a more reconciled Australia.
Today we continue to work together to further the national journey towards a fully reconciled
country. There is greater acknowledgement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights to
land and sea; understanding the impact of government policies and frontier conflicts; and an
embracing of stories of Indigenous success and contribution.
We are all playing our part in building relationships and communities that value the
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures.

VOLUNTEERS’ WEEK
National Volunteer Week was celebrated between 18th and 24th May, the theme of which was
“Changing Communities. Changing Lives”. It is indeed a time for organisations to say
“Thank you” to those many thousands of people who donate their time to the service of
others.
Many organisations would not be able to exist or grow without the support of volunteers,
from sporting clubs to Board representation, political parties, hospitals, Lifesaving and
schools.
Here at Burwood Heights Primary School and Kindergarten we are the same. The parents and
community members create a wonderful tapestry of talent in which we all benefit. Usually
our school would be a hive of activity as our volunteers would have been assisting with
reading, sporting days, performances, excursions, Homecrafts, Outdoor Learning Classroom,
Kindergarten, sale of school uniform, Kids Hope Programme and book covering to name a
few areas where support has been willingly given and gratefully received. We can’t wait
until the time our volunteers are able to enter our school again. You are with us in
spirit.

REMINDER KEY MESSAGES FOR OUR COMMUNITY
To continue to stay apart (1.5metres);
To wash your hands regularly with soap and water; or apply sanitizer;
To not touch your face, including your eyes, nose or mouth
To seek medical advice if you present with any symptoms e.g. runny nose, high
temperature, sore throat or a cough.
Like many across the world, we are taking initial steps to a more familiar world. The path
ahead remains uncertain, but, in considered, sensible manner, needs to be ventured. I again
take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support, as we focus on our
community’s health and wellbeing.
Lemon Sour Cream Cupcakes These cupcakes are tangy and moist and it’s hard to stop at one! They also work really well with oranges as well.
This is a super easy one bowl cake, YUM!
INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup light sour cream
50g unsalted butter, softened
1 tablespoon finely grated lemon rind
3/4 cup caster sugar
2 eggs
1 ½ cups self-raising flour
Finely shredded lemon rind, to decorate
LEMON ICING
2 cups icing sugar mixture, sifted
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon butter (5 g), melted
METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan forced. Line a 12-hole, 1/3 cup capacity
muffin pan with paper cases.
2. Using an electric mixer, beat sour cream, butter, lemon rind, sugar, eggs
and flour on low speed for 1 minute or until ingredients are just combined.
Increase speed to high. Beat for 2 minutes or until thick and creamy.
3. Spoon mixture into muffin holes until three quarters full. Bake for 20 to
25 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre of one cake comes out
clean. Remove from oven. Turn cakes out onto a wire rack to cool.
LEMON ICING:
4. Place icing sugar in a bowl. Add lemon juice and butter. Stir until smooth
and spreadable. Spread icing over cakes. Top with lemon rind. Set aside for
20 minutes to set. Serve.
ENJOY!
