Standards DVSA requirementsA secure load is attached to the vehicle so that it will not fall off or affect vehicle stability and pose a risk of danger or injury to other road users.

The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 state that ‘…the weight, distribution, packing and adjustment of the load of such vehicle or trailer shall at all times be such, that no danger is caused or is likely to be caused to any person in or on the vehicle or trailer or on a road.’

DVSA’S ENFORCEMENTWe will issue a prohibition and fixed penalty of £100 for any load found to be insecure.

Understanding the laws of Load Control• The Road Traffic Act says that anyone who

causes or permits a vehicle to be loaded, may be held responsible if the load is dangerous

• If a load is properly restrained, on a stationary tipping truck or trailer, it will not dislodge, even when the deck is fully tilted

• A ‘curtain-side’ cannot restrain a load properly unless it is part of a certified load restraint system

• If a load falls off a vehicle travelling at 100 km/h and is hit by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction at 100 km/h, it has the same impact as the load travelling at 200 km/h and hitting the vehicle when it is stationary

• Low friction is high risk!

1 2 3 4 5CARRYING OUT A LOAD RISK ASSESSMENTA plan showing how a vehicle is loaded is very useful, and can help a driver prove in the event of a road side spot check that the driver has been responsible in loading correctly.

Employees and the self employed have a legal duty under health and safety legislation to assess the risk of what they do.

Risk assessment is not a difficult process, all you need to do is think about what you do, what could go wrong and what would happen, or would anyone be injured if it did.

You only need to record the assessment if you have 5 or more employees, but even owner drivers will find it beneficial to write it down as it helps you to identify risks, and what measures you can take to prevent the risk occurring.

THE BLUE LABEL

We use a heavy duty embossed vinyl which resists tear out. This in turn increases the legal longevity of CargoStraps.

A two part Ratchet Strap must have an individual label sewn into each part to conform with the UK and European standard. This secures all the critical identification in case of an incident. Ratchet Straps do not comply with EN12195-2:2001 without a visible intact data label securely sewn to all detachable sections.

One-way lashing

Tensioning device MUL-375Textile strappingFor use on strapping up to 40mm and includes cutting device.

Woven StrappingIn contrast to polyester textile strapping, the polyester yarns are not glued but instead crosswoven. This results in the strapping being less easily severed by sharp-edged goods, and so is often used for strapping of split wood for example. Following the weaving process, our woven strapping is further refined with cold glue. Thus it becomes stiffer and enables greater system strengths when used in conjunction with metal buckles. Due to the resultant smoother surface in comparison with HotMelt polyester strapping, the use of phosphated buckles in place of galvanized buckles is recommended.

Composite StrappingWith composite strapping the polyester yarns are additionally sheathed with a plastic coating and is therefore optimally protected against sharp edges and weathering. Please note if you want to switch from HotMelt or woven strapping to composite strapping, the core diameter is 200 mm instead of 76 mm and you may therefore require different strap dispensing carts.
