MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR CHARLOTTE BAYNTUN-COWARD THURSDAY 17th NOVEMBER at 2.30 in BATH ABBEY Many of you will have heard the sad news that Charlotte Bayntun-Coward died at her home on September 9th, aged 77 after a short but difficult illness, throughout which she maintained the cheerful, positive attitude she had demonstrated all her life. If Charlotte was not very visible in Dunkerton for many years before her retirement it was because she was so busy doing things for other people. Charlotte qualified as a social worker and was one of the first qualified social workers attached to Combe Down Surgery. While bringing up her own four children, she fostered young babies, and her family were astonished to discover after her death that she had fostered as many as 16. She was a magistrate for many years, chairing the court at North Parade Road, and was an almoner of St John’s Hospital for 25 years before she retired, at the age of 75, in 2014. She was also a trustee of several Bath charities, including the Genesis Trust, for which she held a number of fundraising events in Dunkerton Parish Hall. In recent years, Charlotte could be seen regularly walking the Withyditch triangle to keep herself fit. She attended the church regularly and, for several years, worked hard behind the tea stall at Dunkerton Fair. She will be

much missed, not only by her children and grandchildren, of whom she was immensely proud, but by so many others, in Dunkerton and beyond, whose lives she touched in so many ways. A memorial service for Charlotte will be held in Bath Abbey on Thursday 17th November at 2.30pm. If you wish to attend, you are advised to arrive early - such was Charlotte’s popularity and reach across Bath that her family have been sent more than 900 letters of condolence.

Café and Craft is back! Over the last couple of years our ‘Cafe and Craft’ service has become an integral and very popular part of our pattern of worship in Dunkerton. Three times a year we meet in the Village Hall and in an informal way we share refreshments, and carry our craft activities based on the theme of the day. And now it’s back! On Sunday November 20th at 11.15am we will be meeting to reflect on when the Archangel Gabriel came to visit Mary to tell her that she was going to have a very important baby. It’s an important part of the Christmas story but sometimes becomes overlooked. Please put the date in your diaries and come and join us!

Report on the Dunkerton & Tunley Parish Council Meeting held at

Tunley Recreation Centre 22nd September 2016

FINANCE. The balance of funds as at 22 September is £9158.28.

PLANNING Planning Enforcement Appeal Peasedown Community Farm Dunkerton Hill Dunkerton. Without planning permission use of land for builders yard. Appeal Ref: 16/00049/ENFAPL, Enforcement Ref: 14/00806/UNAUTH, Planning Inspectorate Ref: APP/F0114/C/16/3152073-6526. The Parish Council agreed by a majority vote to submit a response to the appeal requesting that the enforcement action be upheld and the appeal dismissed. Planning Application REF 16/04497/FUL. The Willows Bath Road Tunley. Erection of single storey rear extension. The Parish Council unanimously agreed to support this application as it complies with policies CP8, HG.15, GB.2, D.2.D.4 and NE.1 of the core strategy. HIGHWAYS UPDATE The Crossroads and Horse sign on the western approach to North Hill Crossroads, and the Traffic Priority sign at the Fairfield build out in the centre of Tunley have both been finally reinstated correctly. After much prevarication B&NES Highways Maintenance has finally agreed to the reinstatement of the yellow bar markings across the road on the approach to North Hill Crossroads, and at Westbury Terrace, from both directions. Our local Highways Inspector has confirmed that a works order has been issued. At last a senior engineer from B&NES Highways Maintenance is going to visit The Hollow with the aim of sorting out, once and for all, what is required to solve the ongoing problems with the constantly blocking drains on the left hand side of The Hollow, as you go down the hill. The engineer will also sort out what needs to be done to stop the spring water flowing across The Hollow by the Parish Hall. We have been stressing the need to B&NES Highways all this year, to have both these faults rectified before this coming winter.

The 30 mph sign at the junction of Church Lane with the A367 has been reinstated. Thanks to considerable input by Robert Gardiner and Nick Patch the changes to the Stoneage Lane Planters are well under way. We are held up at the moment whilst we wait for the hedge to be cut, the property owner has arranged for this to be done by mid-October. Once the hedge cutting has been completed we will need to raise the level of the ground behind the sleepers, Robert has kindly offered to supply some suitable soil and the wild flower seed which we will sow this autumn. Post meeting note: The hedge has been cut, the soil level raised and the wild flower mix sown.” PUBLIC RIGHTS OF WAY UPDATE The bogginess of the ground where the footpath passes the Equestrian Centre has been dealt with by B&NES PROW officer who is keeping an eye on this to ensure the matter has been resolved satisfactorily. A367 REVIEW The parish council has been in contact with Cllr Anthony Clarke, B&NES Cabinet Member for Highways and he has welcomed our initiative, and advised that following the implementation of the A37 Road Safety Audit, further roads are now scheduled to be audited; the A4 is next followed by the A367. Cllr Clarke is encouraging us to submit our review to be incorporated into the B&NES safety audit of the A367. Cllrs Robinson and Orme to work on this review in conjunction with Peasedown St John Parish Council. Next meeting 1st December Tunley Recreation Centre 7:30 pm. Post Meeting Note: - The working group reviewing the Tunley Traffic Calming Scheme will present an update on their work at the Parish Council meeting in the TRC on the 1st December.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH 20/10/16 7164 CS225

Attempted Burglary At approximately 1.15am on Wednesday October 19th, an unknown male has attempted to force entry to a property on St John’s Close, Peasedown St John. After being alerted by a shout from a neighbour, the resident saw the silhouette of the offender trying the handle of the back door. The owner held the handle up to prevent any possible entry, which has caused damage to the handle. The offender has then moved off.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact the Police on 101. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111

Manders Orchard Group On Saturday 5th November there is an open invitation to join the Manders Orchard Group from 10.30 am to join a grass cutting and tidying up session plus pick your own apples. Very generously, at 12.30 the Manders family will provide everyone with home-made burgers and baps. All are welcome - just bring some tools (strimmers, secateurs, rakes, strong gloves etc) and whatever you would like to add to the burger lunch - but to help with catering numbers please email [email protected] or text 07831 370353 by Wednesday 3rd November if you plan to attend and would like to 'book a burger'..... or just come along on the day.

From The Rectory I’m in Wells. I’m on my way to the Deanery for a meeting, I’ve parked the car on the Waitrose car park, walked up Chamberlain St, turned right into Sadler St and into the ancient gatehouse – and it’s there! The West facia of the Cathedral! It’s beautiful, it’s wonderful and it gives you a muffled sense of the holy.

It’s the product of creation and the work of human hands and for 900 years it’s given glory to God.

About twenty years ago Sylvia and I were travelling across the Nubian Desert from Aswan to Abu Simbel when the coach driver stopped to allow us to see the sun rise above the desert – first a speck, then a lozenge shape and finally a glorious orange ball.

A lady in our party showed her wonder and gratitude at that moment by singing ‘Be still

Page 7: ISSUE 90 THE BATCH · 2016. 10. 29. · ISSUE 90 2 MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR CHARLOTTE BAYNTUN-COWARD THURSDAY 17th NOVEMBER at 2.30 in BATH ABBEY Many of you will have heard the sad news

and know that I am God’ – it was wonderful and very powerful.

To have a sense of wonder is to be human, to be thankful for that moment and to show gratitude to God for those moments is to become alive.

Do you have a sense of wonder at the world around you and at what is going on around?

Are there fleeting moments when you feel very close to God? Are you grateful to God for those moments? Do you give thanks to him for them?

How often do we show our gratitude to God? How good are we at saying ‘Thank you’ to Him and to others?

In our worship we nearly always have a formal space for telling God what we have done wrong (negatives) and for asking Him to put all sorts of concerns (negatives) we have right but never seem to have a space for saying ‘Thank You’ to Him for the good things.

So what may we wish to say ‘Thank You’ for? The list is endless. Just take 10 minutes out and think of all the good things that have happened to you in the last day or week or year … You’ll be surprised!

Has someone done you a turn – don’t hesitate tell them ‘thank you’ it is a wonderful affirmation of what they have done.

At the end of each day, take five minutes out, think of all the good things that have happened to you during the day – all the positives – and give thanks to God for them. I’m sure you’ll feel better.

Just to finish with a reminder that on 13th November we will be holding our Remembrance Day service at 10.45am. This year Michael de Grey will be giving the address – it’s entitled ‘Why we didn’t lose World War 1 – A Spy Story’ It sounds intriguing! Hope to see you there. Your friend, in Christ,

Gordon
