journey ..

I joined UBEL on

29th May 2007. It

was not difficult

for me to adjust to

the culture of

UBEL as within

seven days of my

induction into the

Organisation, I

plunged myself

i n t o a c t i v i t y ,

visiting the sites I

was responsible

for. The company

then was going

through a difficult

phase, particularly

in the face of the economic slowdown.

It was quite a challenge for me to renew and instill

confidence amongst the Site Management who had

struggled for the past few years in the face of the financial

adversity. I thought the best way to raise the morale of the

site personnel was by providing them with as much support

as they required. The difference was noticeable with the

seasoned Site teams' improved performance. The change

was also noticeable with Customers’ attitude towards the

Company as a consequence of the renewed confidence of

the Site Managers in themselves and motivation by

Mr. J.K..Sardana, who had taken charge very recently.

With the improved economic climate, new orders poured

in, and the Organisation was ready for further expansion.

The performance in the subsequent years was vastly

improved with the turnover leaping multifold and along

with it grew the enthusiasm of the employees.

I find a vastly improved situation today with our Customers

exhibiting faith in our performance and an equally

exuberant employee force ready to meet any challenge

ahead.

Projects : A strategic business

Projects are indeed the backbone of UBEL. To quote our

Chairman - Turnover is our “Vanity” and the profitability is

our “Sanity”. A major part of “Sanity" is the contribution of

our Projects team.

Since a major part of the Company's profitability is the

responsibility of the Projects team, it is very important that

the Projects operate within the budgeted parameters. After

the financial factor, the second most important factor is the

satisfaction and confidence of the Customer. The best way

of achieving both the factors is ensuring that the Project is

completed in the least time possible. Customer satisfaction

ensures repeat orders which translate into generation of

better profitability. Optimisation of costs is a must in

projects which are perceived to be slow-paced.

Handling diversity in Projects

The life in Projects is “stormy” and “thorny”. Our site

people have to undergo severe hardships on a day to day

basis coupled with extended hours of rigorous hard work

under hostile conditions. They are in constant touch with

the Customer and thus become answerable to them for any

setbacks. They are handling construction workers who are

basically unorganized and this makes the sites prone to

Industrial unrest at the slightest reason. It is therefore

necessary that we keep a line of constant communication

with the site, understanding their difficulties and

requirements.

I make it a point to converse with all my sites teams

regularly, get myself apprised of their difficulties and try to

resolve them to the extent possible. This apart, visiting the

sites periodically helps me build a personal rapport with the

site team which in turn eases the line of communication.

Motivation : the key to project success

Motivation cannot be generated by one individual. It is a

collective effort of all the members of the Organisation.

Most importantly, the sites must not feel that they are

isolated but very much a part of the Organisation. We must

respond to all the requirements of the sites and also must

realize that it is from the sites where we are generating our

profits and turnovers. We tend to share the successes of the

sites but shy away from their failures. This attitude has an

adverse effect on the people at site and affects their morale.

I always tell my site teams to take decisions whenever

required. If the decisions are right, the credit goes to them;

if they are wrong the responsibility is mine. I always believe

that “A good Manager is one who has taken the worse

decisions in his life and has learnt from them”

Our achievements : our pride

The achievements of the Projects division are multiple. The

first achievement is that we have been able to collectively

achieve a record turnover during the past three years. We

have commissioned the first 600 MW Boiler of BHEL at

North Chennai Thermal Power Station which has now

catapulted UBEL to qualify for Super critical boilers for NTPC

and BHEL. The prestigious EPC Project of Acoustic

SuppressionSystem at ISRO Sriharikota is also near

completion and is likely to be commissioned in August '12.

We are possibly handling the most number of sites now

than this Organisation has ever handled at one time.

Finally the learnings I would like to share....

We all should be good learners. We should always strive to

learn from others' experiences and use them as and when

required. Be a good listener and share your feelings and

thoughts with others. Try and keep a proactive approach in

work as this would largely help us in easing out the

difficulties faced.

Lastly and most importantly, be empathetic to all your

colleagues and subordinates. This would help coagulate

the Organisation and perform better.

It is rather hard to believe that it has been two long years since the inaugural edition of our in-house magazine,

Facebook was published. The first issue of Facebook was launched in June, 2010, with the mission to provide a

platform to the UBEL Family to share their moments of joy, achievements and views on various issues.

Over these two years, Facebook has successfully managed to bridge the gap between the employees and served as the

communication vehicle for the UBEL Family. The response to this initiative has been overwhelming. Members from

across the sites of UBEL have participated and contributed to the 9 quarterly issues of Facebook.

Facebook is also now the mode of showcasing the company's various achievements. It keeps the employees, clients

and other stakeholders updated about the prestigious orders bagged by the company. It also highlights the awards,

and other achievements, thus helping one and all keep updated about the company. The editorial team has also come

a long way in learning a great deal about our colleagues and their joys, their expectations, their concerns and their

moments of pride. Knowledge about our colleagues has helped us develop Facebook into a better magazine with every

issue.

Our Annual Sports activities have become a major employee engagement initiative by the HR. These activities have

paved a way for communication and socialization between our members. It has also helped in the development of

team and competitive spirit in employees while enhancing their self- confidence and concentration. The three months

of sports activities have been a much needed stress buster and provided mental relaxation. It has also brought to the

forefront several hidden talents within the organization.

Cricket was introduced in the sports activities this year. It was the first time we hosted a group game. The response and

the revelation of amazing talents and team bonding were overwhelming. The participants practiced arduously, and the

matches were a treat to the onlookers, for the players were nothing short of professional. It brought together several

employees across departments as teams and created an atmosphere of fun amidst the nail-biting tension.

The current times are difficult for the business community. We are hit by a recession, that makes it critical for us to use

our resources optimally. In our special back page article, we have given tips to optimise our human resources.

As we publish the Ninth Quarterly Issue of Facebook, we look forward to increased participation from the UBEL family

members from across sites as we endeavor to make Facebook a better and stronger magazine.

The Light – Up of the 600 MW Boiler (Unit 2) at North Chennai

TPP was successfully completed on April 11, 2012. This is a proud

achievement for UBEL as this is the first 600 MW Boiler

manufactured by BHEL which has been commissioned. With this

activity the EDTA process has commenced and the Boiler would

be ready for commercial production within the next three

months.

This achievement would now qualify UBEL for bidding of Boiler

erection of capacities above 600 MW. We have been able to

achieve this goal of commissioning far ahead of Unit 1 in the

same Project, though the erection work of Unit 1 started 5

months ahead of Unit 2.

UBEL has also been awarded the Power Cycle Piping of Unit 2 in

this Project which is also in an advanced stage of completion. With this status in view, BHEL and TNEB have now decided to

bring Unit 2 into Commercial production ahead of Unit 1.

The experience our team has gained at this Project has been very rewarding and the company should gain immensely from

this valuable experience.

The hydrotest of the Boiler 1 at the Angul site, for Bhushan

Energy Limited, has been successfully completed on June

20, 2012. This is a 2

X 425 TPH CFBC

UB Engg was awarded a certificate as the `Best Safety Conscious Company’ at GAIL Pata site on the occasion of 41st National Safety Day Celebrations. The certificate was awarded by Mr. P Murguesan, GM (Projects), GAIL. This was received by Mr. SK Day RPM, UBEL.

repeat order of CRM 1 but with increased scope of work. The Customer has considered our performance in CRM 1 and

other jobs before finalization. We have bagged this order in competition with L&T.

The Borai team has achieved a major mile stone by declaring the commencement of production on June 10, 2012.

Mr. JK Sardana along with Mr. A Rudrachary visited our Fabrication Unit at Durg on June 14, 2012. They interacted with the team members and appreciated the efforts in the progress of the Unit.

Mr. A. Rudrachary joined the UBEL Family in

the month of May, 2012, as “Chief Financial

Officer” at our Head Office, Pune. He holds a

Degree of Bachelors of Commerce from the

University of Mysore. He is also an Associate

member of the Institute of Cost Works

A c c o u n t a n t s o f I n d i a , C a l c u t t a .

Mr. Rudrachary brings with him a rich experience of 43

years in the managerial cadre. He has worked for various

reputed institutions like Kirloskar, Grasim Industries, NGEF

and MEI. He has previously been working with Mangalore

Chemicals and Fertilizers, which is a part of the UB Group.

In his sixteen long years of heading the Finance and the

Material Functions in MCF, he played a vital role in its

revival. He was thereafter retained for two years as Senior

Vice President – Strategic Initiatives.

People Focus

Welcome Aboard

The days spent with my bio-mates,solving the problems of logigates,we had so much of fun,now we are just standing stun.

When we all played football,the days at the metro station's stall,when we message each other,seriously, pining for the days we spent together.

Thinking of the days spent with my best friends,feeling as though our life has reached it's dead end,want these silly moments to come back,I know in future these moments will be lack.

Teen Murti and Bal Bhawan's trip,I wish I could get a tight grip,will definitely miss Mughal Garden's flowers,missing and loving is just friendship's power.

A very few moments spent in art's section,

meeting them with so many restricitions,will miss the moments when we were given the blame,as we used to play silly silly games.

I know we'll never miss each other,as we would always stay in touch forever,but seriously pain of separation never ends,as will miss my sweet friends.

Will miss the CHALK DO BOYS,will miss the BUNKERS and THE FAMOUS FIVES,will even miss the DJ RAAP,wish the pain gets over ASAP.

When we will enter our teenagerwill definitely miss our school's passage,now putting a full stop and coming to the end,I am proud to say that you guys are my friends.

The Days I spent with my friends

Mr. Rajendra Gaur joined the UBEL

Family in the month of December,

2011 as “Head –Execution” at our

Delhi Office (Electrical Division). He

holds a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical

Engineering from Thapar Institute of

Engineering and Technology, Patiala.

He brings with him, 38 years of rich experience in

Power Transmission & Distribution Projects. Mr.

Rajendra Gaur was previously working as the

Managing Director of Indraprastha Power

Generation Co. Ltd and Pragati Power Corporation

Ltd, which are the two Generating companies

under the Government of NCT, Delhi.

Mr. Ravindra Babu Yelamanchili joined the UBEL family in the month of May, as “General Manager

Mr. A. Rudrachary joined the UBEL Family in

the month of May, 2012, as “Chief Financial

Officer” at our Head Office, Pune. He holds a

Degree of Bachelors of Commerce from the

University of Mysore. He is also an Associate

member of the Institute of Cost Works

Mr. Rudrachary brings with him a rich experience of 43

years in the managerial cadre. He has worked for various

reputed institutions like Kirloskar, Grasim Industries, NGEF

and MEI. He has previously been working with Mangalore

Chemicals and Fertilizers, which is a part of the UB Group.

In his sixteen long years of heading the Finance and the

Material Functions in MCF, he played a vital role in its

revival. He was thereafter retained for two years as Senior

Vice President – Strategic Initiatives.

The days spent with my bio-mates,solving the problems of logigates,we had so much of fun,now we are just standing stun.

When we all played football,the days at the metro station's stall,when we message each other,seriously, pining for the days we spent together.

Thinking of the days spent with my best friends,feeling as though our life has reached it's dead end,want these silly moments to come back,I know in future these moments will be lack.

Teen Murti and Bal Bhawan's trip,I wish I could get a tight grip,will definitely miss Mughal Garden's flowers,missing and loving is just friendship's power.

A very few moments spent in art's section,

meeting them with so many restricitions,will miss the moments when we were given the blame,as we used to play silly silly games.

I know we'll never miss each other,as we would always stay in touch forever,but seriously pain of separation never ends,as will miss my sweet friends.

UBEL SPORTS 2012The UBEL Annual sports for

the year 2012 commenced

on the 16th of March. The

busy corporate schedule

limits our life in many ways,

m a k i n g i t r a t h e r

sharp at 9 O'clock, work

through 8 – 9 hours, often

more if required. By the

time we get home, the bed

seems to be the most

inviting element! Can one

The Annual Sports is an initiative to break this cycle and bring back the human element in the lives of the

Family members. Sports activities are beneficial for us in many ways. One of the most obvious reasons is that

it gives us the much needed exercise that our body requires but we are unable to fit into our busy schedules.

It improves our cardiovascular functions, while also increasing our concentration and problem solving skills.

The UBEL Annual Sports saw a congregation of employees across various departments. The participation

and enthusiasm was encouraging. Several activities were held which included, Badminton, Table Tennis,

Carom, Chess, Athletics and Cricket.

The Cricket Tournament, being the only group game, was filled with fun and frolic and a lot of anticipation.

Our teams came up with the most creative names: “UB Warriors”, “UB Blue Sharks” and the “UB i Team”.

The team spirit and the bonding was one to behold. All our three teams made an exuberant show of talent

and sportsmanship! While UB Blue Sharks made their way into the finals with two convincing victories, our

Warriors struggled their way into

the finals and bagged the

Championship Trophy, keeping up

to their names! The final game was

indeed a treat for the spectators.

The rest of the activities too,

revealed some extraordinary

talents.

Maximize the potential talent in the organization

Motivating people to do their best work, consistently, has been an enduring challenge for executives a n d m a n a g e r s . E v e n u n d e r s t a n d i n g w h a t constitutes human motivation has been a centuries old puzzle, addressed as far back as Aristotle. Now brain science is giving us some new insights into motivation which are going to help in maximizing the potential and talent of any organization.

'Harnessing talent' is another expression you hear a lot, usually about young talent. But harnesses are thick pieces of leather used to strap down, control and direct cattle and horses. So the last thing we want to do is harness talent. We want it de-harnessed, set free, challenged to try new things, to take ideas further than we were brave enough to.

Success of a business is determined by three main drivers, Ideas, Investment, Individuals. However, for the majority of businesses investment is made in bringing ideas and innovations to market whereas consideration around the people is often left to the wayside....

Some of the most common reasons for losing talent and knowledge are:

�Losing accumulated knowledge through experienced people leaving, retiring or being made redundant.

�Computerisation, systematisation and simplification of work processes.

�Restricting people to roles which under-use their knowledge and skill – and defining people by their current role.

�A preoccupation with tasks and targets and a command and control management style.

�Poor talent management practices.

We can take positive steps to harness the wealth of talent within the organisation by practicing some simple rules.

Develop every employee

Employees can only achieve what they are capab le o f ach iev ing , so the

organisation's can help its employees to be more capable by providing t r a i n i n g , m e n t o r i n g , a n d opportunities according to what the employees need and deserve. More time should be dedicated to developing the skills of employees

and achieving goals will be a natural outcome.

Deal with problems immediately

Nothing kills team morale more quickly than problems that don't get addressed. Small

problems never go away, they fester and grow into bigger problems. Problems that do not get resolved lead to lower morale and involvement, disenchantment and loss in productivity.

Serve others, not yourself

An employer can get away with being selfish or self-serving once or twice... but that's it.Never say or do anything that in any way puts you in the spotlight, however briefly. Employer's glory should always be reflected, never direct.

When employees excel, employer and its business excel. When the team succeeds, both employer and the business succeed too.

Always remember where you came from

To some of your employees, especially new employees, you are at least slightly famous. You're in charge. You're the boss. That's why an employee who wants to talk about something that seems inconsequential may just want to spend a few moments with you. You can blow the employee off, or you can see the moment for its true importance: A chance to inspire, reassure, motivate, and even give someone hopes for greater things in their life. The higher you rise the greater the impact an employer can make, and the greater is their responsibility to make that impact.
