THE new apartments at 6 Waikumete Road by the Ted Manson Foundation and CMP Construction Ltd are really coming along now. By mid-September, they had completed level five of the building, which will consist of two 10- and 11-storey towers separated by a large podium on level 3. The Foundation and CMP have also been doing their bit to help improve the local streetscape by building a new drive for Glen Eden Primary School. RECENTLY the first Auckland-wide count took place of homeless people. It was a sensitive task for the hundreds of volunteers, in a project led by the Housing First collective of community organisations: they were out to count people whose bedrooms are doorways or tents or cars. “The number gives us a more

accurate idea of the scale of the problem rather than speculation,” said Auckland’s mayor, Phil Goff. Homelessness was a mark of shame for Auckland, he said. “I’ve always regarded it as a fundamental right to have a warm and safe home.” “It was great to be part of something good working as a team for West Auckland,” said Glen Eden Community Constable Heber Gasu. “We started at 7pm. By the time we finished at 1am our walking app said we had

covered 10,000 steps!” Among those helping with the count out west were local board chair Shane Henderson, Auckland Councillors Penny Hulse and Linda Cooper (who is also a CPNZ member), Nico Te Atatu, Jennifer Conlon (Glen Eden Village Manager), Penny Hinchelwood (Glen Eden CPNZ), Wayne (Henderson CPNZ), VisionWest, Glen Eden Baptist Church’s regional manager Lisa and Pastor Daniel, and WINZ Glen Eden manager Nicky.

Westies volunteered for a sensitive task

“What a great turnout last night,” said Linda Cooper, Waitakere Ward councillor, the day after. “Our wee group only found one person sleeping in a car in the three hours we were searching. So that’s good news. Hopefully we find from the count that the Housing First and government initiative is making some early positive impact.”

School holiday fun in our library School Holiday activities 1–13 October

The library has fun, free activities to keep children entertained in the October school holidays. On Tuesday 2 October, keen readers can take part in a miniature book craft activity. Choose from some popular tiles and cut, glue and sew them to produce tiny versions of their originals. (This activity is recommended for ages 7+.) On Thursday 4th, children of all ages are invited to travel back in time to Ancient Egypt and make their own cartouche wall hangings with their names written in hieroglyphics. And on Tuesday 9th, paper craft enthusiasts can create their very own steam engines. All three activities will start at 10.30am and run for one hour. Midday matinees of classic children’s films will take place through October at midday on Monday 1st, Friday 5th, Monday 8th, and Friday 12th. Drop in anytime over the school holidays to make a bookmark, or solve the clues and guess the name of the library’s new soft toy for a chance to take it home.

Green Living finale Saturday 13 October, 1.30–2.30pm

The library’s Green Living Festival ends on October 13th. Glen Eden

Transition Town will hold a vegetable seedling swap outside the library, starting at 1.30pm. At the same time, families can take part in a scavenger hunt around the building and be in to win a $100 prize pack, sponsored by Glen Eden Business Association. Children can make seed bombs to plant in hard-to-reach places, and representatives from Love Food, Hate Waste and Live Lightly will be on hand to answer your questions about sustainable living.

Children’s author visit Thursday 18 October, 10.30am

Children’s author Stephanie Thatcher will pay a visit to the library at 10.30am on Thursday 18 October as part of the library’s regular Toddler Time programme. Writer and illustrator of popular picture books such as The Quiet Pirate (2013), Little Hoiho (2015), Pūtangitangi Walks (2017) and, most recently, Kiwi One and Kiwi Two (2018), Stephanie has maintained a freelance career in graphic design, motion graphics and illustration as well as being a mum to three boys.

Look out for new events at our local RSAGLEN EDEN RSA plans to hold a party night every month, some themed where people can dress up. The function room will be decorated accordingly. “We are really trying to make the local community aware of what an easy, inexpensive and great place our club is for a variety of activities,” explains Nicole Busher of Glen Eden RSA. “It is a friendly, safe environment close to home. We have a few of our local sport clubs and non-profit groups who regularly use our lounge for prizegivings, fundraising events and staff functions, and we want to encourage this. We also hope that our local businesses view the club as the perfect place to hold functions and staff parties.”

I have been heavily involved in the Glen Eden community since 1988 when I set up my law practice here. I have always liked the place. It is full of good people and has a strong, proud and generous community. You just have to see the multitude of groups and organisations that exist here to realise how many people give freely of their time. The latest example of this is the establishment of three free roadside pantries in Glen Eden. A number of people have been involved but Heather Tanguay, Joy Bennett, Lisa Sherwood, EcoMatters Trust, Levelled Up Builders, the Glen Eden Residents Association and many others should be praised and thanked. The idea of the pantries is simple. Locals with plenty can deposit food into the pantries so that locals who are struggling can receive free food. From each according to their ability and to each according to their need. Micky Savage would have been proud.  Even the large businesses have been involved, with Fresh Choice Glen Eden making a significant donation. I am not sure where the proposal came from, although Heather Tanguay was the first person I heard raise the idea. She then floated it on Facebook and the idea took off. Clearly a number of generously minded local people also thought it was a really good idea. If only social media worked like this more often! This is a local example of the Pataka Kai movement, the translation of which is

Food Pantry. The movement is a resident-led, grassroots, crowd-sourced solution to helping locals that are in need. At the same time it builds and strengthens community. Donation is totally discretionary. Those in need can take what they need with the only expectation that they leave enough for others. This is not a new idea. Historically it was always a feature of our community that we looked after each other. It is only in these more recent dog-eat-dog days that this generous community spirit has been reduced. Congratulations again. If you drive past one of these Pataka Kai and you have more than enough, think about leaving something

for those in our community who struggle more than we do.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMME AT YOUR LOCAL

COMMUNITY HOUSE

Looking for something to do in the holidays? THE Project Twin Streams Glen Eden team works with the community to restore the banks of the Waikumete stream (anywhere between Glen Eden Picnic Ground and Kowhai Reserve). Join them as a volunteer on their Love Your Stream days to learn more about your local streams and give them a hand to look after these beautiful urban ecosystems. Wear sturdy shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Kids must be accompanied by an adult. Email [email protected] for details of where to meet. Love Your Stream days are Wednesdays and Fridays 9am–3pm (but you can stay as long as you like).

Spring-clean to sellSELLING your house? Here are a few things you can do that won’t break the bank and will improve saleability and add value, says Ryan Young of Barfoot and Thompson Glen Eden.  Wash the exterior of the house. Even if it’s brick, the eaves, spouting and windows will need a good clean after winter. Give the windows and sills a good clean inside and out. Waterblast or buy a spray-on-and-walk-away product to clean paths. These take several weeks to fully kill moss and lichen and may still require agitation with a broom or high-pressure hose to get the best effect. Clean steps, decks and driveways and even lichen on the roof. Lots of moss and mould might suggest to buyers that the property is unduly shady, wet or damp.  De-clutter and store away that bulky furniture, lose the coffee or corner table; just do what you can to make rooms feel more spacious. It’s also a good time to remove valuable trinkets and ornaments to safe storage before marketing the property.

Glen Eden August stats: 28 sales; median sale $678,500; highest residential sale $935,300 (a large 4-bed home on 1561sq m); lowest sale $480,000 (2-bed unit).

Doing the right thing in their own way

AS Greg Presland highlighted in his Local Board column, Glen Eden people are a generous community who give freely of their time and want to do the right thing. Whether it’s

friendly folks collecting for charity outside Fresh Choice or a shop phasing out plastic bags to reduce their impact on the environment, we’re pleased to see it happening.

NEW IN TOWN…

AMONG the new businesses opening in Glen Eden recently are The Zone Cafe on West Coast Road and a gleaming laundromat in Glenmall Place. Amrita (pictured with her partner) gets up in the small hours of the morning to cook the goodies you can see in the photo so the least you can do is go and try her tasty, tempting creations!

Ever wondered why our eyes look bloodshot when we wake up? As we blink throughout the day, our eyes are constantly lubricated by basal tears. However, when we are asleep, our eyes are closed and we stop making these tears because our eyes need less lubrication. Since our eyes are closed, less oxygen reaches their surface. To compensate, the tiny blood vessels on the sclera (white part of our eye) dilate – they widen to allow more blood to pass through, which supplies extra oxygen and nutrients to the eye.  Bloodshot eyes can have lifestyle- and health-related causes such as tiredness, improper diet, excessive alcohol consumption, improper use of contact lenses, regular smoking or allergies. People occasionally have

haemorrhages on the white of the eye, sometimes from trauma and sometimes spontaneously. These are bright red and look dramatic but they are perfectly safe and resolve over a week or so. There are other, more serious issues that can cause bloodshot eyes, including corneal ulcers, a physical injury to the eye, dry eye and conjunctivitis. Whether dry, irritated from a long night of partying or sneezed into an angry red state after petting the cat, red bloodshot eyes in most cases are easy to fix and are usually temporary. However, if your bloodshot eyes persist, we recommend you see an optometrist as soon as possible to have them checked out.

Little And Loud – My Life Story

ONE of our very own Glen Eden icons has become an author. Sharon Davies, simply known as Shaz to

most, recently published her life story. In her book she shares many life experiences including some funny and not-so-funny quips as to how she deals with various situations living as a disabled person in pretty much an able-bodied world. Glen Eden library has kindly agreed to host a Q&A session with Shaz and Sir Bob Harvey, who wrote the Foreword. The session will be at 11am on Saturday 3 November in the library meeting room. Feel free to come along to hear what they have say. Shaz will also have copies of her books available for sale at $30, which she will gladly sign for you.

Sudan has seen a shift in attitude. People are embracing their hair’s personality and natural uniqueness and are feeling good and liberated about it. For decades women have battled with their textured hair, striving to achieve smooth and straight hair, not realising the beauty of their own. But not any more. Mad about Waves is the holistic care and styling regime dedicated to different texture types, respecting, beautifying and taking pride in each unique pattern, allowing clients to fall in love with their insanely gorgeous wave.
