The Fisher House is a home away from home for families of patients receiving medical care at a major military/VA medical center. The Fisher House is run by Donations & Volunteers; there is no cost to the family to stay at these homes. Enabling family members to be near a loved one in a time of need-often without warning or the ability to muster the financial resources to do so- is a core concept of the Fisher house motto: “A Family’s Love is Good Medicine.” The homes feature a common kitchen, laundry facilities, and spacious dining room and inviting living room with a library and toys for children; the homes have 8 to 21 suites with private bedrooms and baths. All meals are provided including personal care items. Our first stay was at the Fisher House at the Tripler Amy Medical Center, in Honolulu Hawaii, then on to the Fisher House at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis MN. It was truly amazing how in times of need, perfect strangers come together and unite as family, each person doing his/her part in support of everyone and everything. I don’t think you could ever find that kind of togetherness, generosity, caring and warmth. Truly exceptional people.Auxiliary President, Tammy Freye
