Brain cancer. It’s a disease that affects thousands of Australians each year.

It is the disease that a well-known member of our Burdekin community, Laurence Pavone, has been diagnosed with. Despite its widespread impact on so many people, the cure for this type of cancer is yet to be discovered. To raise awareness of brain cancer and much needed funds for research into its cure, Laurence along with his family, created the foundation “Laurie’s Love”. As a year level, the Year 8 students saw an opportunity to support this great cause. The students fundraised by selling merchandise at a stall and had a free dress day to bring awareness around brain cancer. Ayr State High School was also very fortunate to have Laurence attend our school assembly and share his inspiring story. He also interacted with staff and students whilst painting hearts, the logo of the foundation, on their faces. Through our fundraising efforts, we were able to raise $900. This is an amazing effort! Congratulations to the Year 8 students and thank you to our school community for coming together and supporting a great cause. Remember, “the infinite love is the cure”.

5.30 pm, Resource CentreAll welcome.

This week was the Ayr State High Heats of the Rostrum Voice of

Youth public speaking competition. Again this year we had a large number of students participating. Twenty-two students from Year 7 to Year 12 performed speeches of between six to eight minutes in length. What a fantastic display of talent. The courage, confidence, poise and conviction to their topics was absolutely remarkable. As I said on the night I was very proud of all participants, proud of their abilities and proud that they are part of the Ayr High family. Thanks goes to Mrs Linda Attard our co-ordinator, as well as Mr Tom Pickersgill and Mr Nathan Cook who have supported the students to develop and deliver their speeches. Congratulations goes to Lucas Donovan and Madisyn Grant who were the winners in the Junior Section and Keagan Flynn and Sarah McDonnell who were the winners of the senior section.Last week was our Apprenticeship Readiness Evening. This was a fantastic evening with local employers including Wilmar, Burdekin Shire Council, Ergon Energy, Glencore, Evolution Mines and TAFE North all giving great insight to students and parents/carers from across the Burdekin about how their recruitment processes work and what they are looking for in possible apprentices and trainees. Thanks to our Guidance Officer Mrs Sarah Matthews who organised the event.Looking forward, the Year 10 students are beginning their journeys towards senior schooling. At the moment we are focused on helping students to develop a possible career pathway.

We are asking students to consider their likes and dislikes, character traits and innate skills to think of possible career paths. I say a career ‘path’ rather than an individual career, because at this time there is no need to become completely focused on one specific career. We would prefer students to keep their options open to allow for greater flexibility as they mature through to the end of Year 12 and beyond. Next term we will look to formalise this into a Student Education and Training Plan or SET Plan. This will involve parents/carers, students and their case managers coming together to formalise the plan which will in turn influence subject selections for Years 11 and 12. Each May, Queensland marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month (DFVP Month) to raise community awareness of domestic and family violence and to send a clear message that violence of this sort will not be tolerated. The special taskforce on Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland in its ‘Not Now, Not Ever’ report, recommended that individuals, community groups and the private sector work together to help prevent domestic and family violence and support those affected. The Burdekin Domestic and Family Violence Network is made up of various services across the region. One of the aims of the Network is to raise awareness in our Burdekin community about the prevalence of Domestic and Family Violence. It provides information about the supports that are in our community and advocates for new supports and programs to be

introduced to help stem the tide of DFV related incidents. On Saturday May 25, a Domestic Violence Awareness Walk will be held at Plantation Park from 8.30 am. We are asking all members of the Ayr High family to join the Burdekin community hitting the pavement to say “NO to Violence”. Yours in education

Apprenticeship Readiness Evening 2019

by Mrs Sarah Matthews, Guidance Officer

On Tuesday 14 May 2019, Ayr State High School ran its annual Apprenticeship Readiness Evening. This year the night coincided

with National Careers Week. The key messages from National Careers Week include:• Career. It’s More Than Just a Job• Discover Who You Are!• It’s Never Too Young to Start Exploring• Make Well-Informed Decisions• Keep Learning. Be ResilientThis year was our best turn-out yet with approximately 80 people in attendance. It was great to see more families from Burdekin Catholic High School and Home Hill State High School this year. Ayr State High School strongly believes in supporting all youth in the Burdekin and therefore will continue to advertise for students from all secondary schools to attend. Keep an eye out next year as we plan to run the evening towards the end of Term 1 in 2020.

Students were able to try their hand at technical aptitude and dexterity tests with the teams from Wilmar International and Ergon Energy. It was great to see parents/carers getting involved in this also. Parents/Carers and students reported that the night was very informative and they enjoyed networking with our local industry employers. As always there were some key points and common themes in each presentation for students to keep in mind. In case you missed it, here are some of the important ones:• Try to complete a range of work experience with different companies, it doesn’t matter if

it isn’t specific to the exact apprenticeship you end up applying for.• If you are applying for a technical trade, keep a portfolio of your work with photos of

projects that you have been working on - this includes working with parents/students on cars at home etc.

• Put aside a couple of hours to complete your application - unfinished applications will be automatically rejected. Generally, this includes a cover letter and resume. If you miss either of these you will not be successful.

• Make sure you have met all of the prerequisites for the job, eg you need Maths B (Mathematical Methods) to be an Electrician with Wilmar or Maths A (General Maths) and a science subject such as Physics or Chemistry for Ergon Energy. Passes in these subjects, including English, are a must.

• There are large numbers of applications for a very limited number of jobs. Make sure your application stands out and shows who you really are.

• You may be required to work at locations that aren’t in the Burdekin and will need to have your own transport.

• You need to be able to talk about why you applied for the job or why you are interested in the job. ‘Because mum told me to apply’ is not an answer that will get you through.

• Most jobs will be advertised between June and August on Seek and in the local paper, Glencore start their applications at the end of May.

• Have an adult proofread your resume and cover letter to avoid mistakes. First impressions are important.• Practise your interview skills as much as possible as many large companies have panel interviews which can be daunting.

Ayr State High School would like to thank all of the parents/carers and students who attended. We would also like to sincerely thank all of the presenters for making the night a huge success.Wilmar International Scott Young, Daniel Shipard and

Drama Fest Cast do their Drama Bestby Keagan Flynn, Year 12 Student

In May, Ayr High participated in the annual Burdekin Interschool Drama Festival where we continued our tradition of performing a student-written piece. This year, Keagan Flynn’s was selected out of all of the possible script ideas presented:

“So, What’s the Script?” The play involved the cast suggesting and acting out different play ideas, from wearing animal onesies, to a story of true love and not ripping off Star Wars. The play was filled with terrific performances from Luke McNee, who kept things hot all night, along with Ryan Kastner, who provided dance moves that not only left the audience in tears, but also stole the whole show. The play concluded as the cast realised the importance of working together resulting in all their ideas combining into a hilarious final scene. Mitchell Pearce, Ky Whittred and Keagan Flynn were deemed the standouts of the performance, winning the Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Director’s Award respectively. A major shout out should go to Ms Gillespie and Mr Pickersgill, whose contribution to the overall success of the production was just as integral as the students' performances themselves.

Queensland Youth Parliament Programby Sarah McDonnell, Year 11 Student

It is not every day that a Year 11 student from a small rural town can call herself the Youth Member of the Burdekin Electorate in the 2019 Queensland Youth Parliament Program.

However, this year I have the honour of that title. On ANZAC Day, I travelled to Brisbane in preparation for the highly anticipated Launch Weekend. My excitement had been building since my acceptance earlier this year and the weekend didn’t disappoint. Being the first day of camp, Friday 26 April was a day full of team building exercises, introductions and the insanely competitive Committee Games. As a part of the Child Safety, Youth and Women (WYSC) Committee, our designated team colour was pink and costume theme was Pink Ladies. Unfortunately, we didn’t win the Committee Games despite our best efforts at trivia and impromptu dancing - although the judges did love our committee war cry as a parody

to Grease Lightning. Saturday’s theme was 'Parliament' with many lectures throughout the day about parliamentary processes, bill writing and significant political figures. The highlight of the trip however, was Saturday evening where we all travelled to Parliament House for the official Launch ceremony (even got a private tour!). Sunday was a bitter sweet day. As a committee, we decided on the topic of our bill for proposal to Parliament under our category of WYSC and began brainstorming ideas for community engagement. Then it was time to say goodbye to the amazing people for six months, until the Sitting Week in September/October holidays. To say this weekend was exciting, memorable, challenging, passionate and full of friends is the understatement of the year. I am so humbled to have this opportunity and words can’t describe how excited I am for Sitting Week and the months ahead... how excited I am to have #myvoiceheard.

Hawks 11 Represent at Relay for Life 2019by Ashley Green and Abby Richards, Year 11 Students

On Saturday 11 May 2019, the 'Hawks 11' team participated in Relay for Life at the Ayr Showgrounds. Twenty-seven students from a variety of year levels and eleven staff members represented Ayr State High School at this community

event organised by the Year 11 cohort. Relay for Life is an event that has been established as both a fun and moving experience, with all funds raised providing vital support for Cancer Council's research, prevention and support services. In a new daytime format, students participated in the event by walking laps of the Ayr Showgrounds with their volleyball ‘baton’. The 'Hawks 11' team kept the energy up throughout the night which resulted in the team winning the Best Spirit Award! The day was filled with fun activities which brought out the team’s competitive side. The Disney newspaper fashion parade starred the one and only Dean Vitale as the gorgeous, long haired Rapunzel. Expert paper fashion skills from the team combined with Dean’s grace and elegance, scored them entry into the final round. The team also pushed their engineering skills to the limit in a spaghetti and marshmallow tower building competition, with a final spot once again secured. This set up a face-off between two skilled and knowledgeable teams; Ayr SHS and Home Hill SHS. It was close, it was intense, but with their sheer determination and remarkable teamwork, Ayr SHS took out both competitions by showcasing Dean’s feisty side as a vicious and fierce lion and developing a marshmallow spaghetti tower looming at a height over 1 m.A highlight of the night was the solemn candlelight ceremony when all competitors reflected on the lives of loved ones touched by cancer. We remembered those we’ve lost, reminded those who are still fighting to have hope and admired those who have overcome cancer. To do this, each member wrote their own personal message on lanterns which lit up the track for the night. From 2-11 pm, we marched not only for those of the past and present which has been touched by cancer, but for the future generations who we hope never have to hear the dreaded 'C' word.Thank you to all who participated and helped raise funds for the Cancer Council. If you would still like to donate, visit the fundraising.cancer.org.au page and donate to the 'Hawks 11' team.

Work Experience WeekChoosing a career path is not always easy for students and it is often the experience offered by employers during work

experience that confirms a student’s decision. During 7 to 10 May, our Year 11 students completed a week’s placement at a variety of local and Townsville businesses. Students undertook work in a vocation that their course of studies can lead them to, with some students using the week to engage in their school based traineeship or apprenticeship. Now that the students have returned to school, they will review their Senior Education Training (SET) plans and their week’s placement to determine what actions they need to take in order to achieve their career goal. Thank you to all those employers who gave up their time to be involved in supporting our students to make these decisions.
