Issue No 7 (18/19): 22 May 2019 Dear Reader This has been another jam-packed, relatively short half term. Easter only seems two minutes ago and the end of the academic year is rapidly approaching. I would like to thank the teachers who organise these trips as well as our willing group of parents who volunteer in order for them to run. A lot of hard work goes into preparing for such events, however the benefits to the children make it worthwhile. Such experiences will be remembered by the children for years to come. Our first round of year group sports days are underway. Y6 spent last Friday putting their athletic skills to the test. It’s Y3’s turn this Friday and the remaining year groups will get their opportunity to show off their track and field skills after half term. Issue No 7 (18/19): 22 May 2019

Dear Reader

This has been another jam-packed, relatively short half term. Easter only seems two minutes ago and the end of the academic year is rapidly approaching. We still have so much to do in the coming weeks - ‘Baden-stock’, sports days, trips, activities weeks, school fair, Transfer Day to name a few. Never a dull moment at BPSP!

I would like to congratulate our Year 6 children who approached the national SAT testing brilliantly. To undertake a series of very difficult tests is no mean feat, and as ever, their positive attitude and commitment shone through. They have simply ‘got on with it’; have supported one another, and with the encouragement and guidance of a dedicated group of Year 6 teachers, have given their all. Well done!

Year 4 returned from their residential trip to Hooke Court exhausted, yet in good spirits and full of stories of memorable events and fun activities. They got stuck in; embraced the experience and had a fabulous time. Year 3 are very soon off to Carey Camp; Year 5 and Year 6 will embark on their activities weeks.

There is no respite in the school calendar next half term, which is looking equally busy. Please continue to check the diary dates on the school website as well as the weekly reminders to ensure all information is read at this very busy time of year.

Have a good half term.

Mrs Rachel Rusling Headteacher Mrs Rusling with some amazing writers enjoying a cream tea in the Staff Room

at the end of last term.

Baden-Powell & St Peter ’s

CE Junior School

Please may we remind you to provide an appropriate lock for your child’s scooter (or bike) if it is brought into school. We have had a recent spate of scooters going missing, alongside a series of incidences of young people accessing the school site unlawfully at the weekends. Footage of the young people has been passed to the Police and we will do our best to recover any property that we believe may have been stolen, but we would appreciate your support with securing scooters and bikes whilst they are at school. Thank you.

Staffing

We bid farewell to Mrs Rachel Peters who will be leaving Baden-Powell and St Peter’s after 10 years to focus on personal projects.

Mrs Peters has been a valued member of staff and has made her mark in her various roles within the school. With many strings to her bow, Mrs Peters has embraced all her roles, including teaching assistant, cover supervisor and librarian with commitment and dedication. She has also been a key contributor to whole school performances over the years, providing choreography for various shows and school events. She has made a significant contribution to the school and whilst she is ready for a new challenge in her own business ventures, she will be sorely missed.

Governing Body

Another busy half term during which Governors have been involved in visits into school, review meetings with senior staff and HLP, assisting with and overseeing administration of the SATS in year 6. Hopefully you will also have seen some of us bearing the orange lanyards at recent school events, if so please do feel free to stop for a chat, we are always keen to hear your views and feedback.

We have had a recruitment drive over the past few months and are very pleased to welcome two new Governors to our team, Sam Bury and Steve Caldwell. Whilst they may well be known to some of you, I hope to introduce them more formally through the next issue of Headlines! Before the end of term we will be advertising for a new parent Governor, should you be interested in standing for this role please do come and have a chat. It is a wonderful opportunity to give something back to our community and get more involved in our fabulous school.

As always please feel free to contact us via the school office. Meanwhile have a wonderful break over half term and see you in June! Claire Kelly BPSP Chair of Governors

“I liked Hooke Court a lot. I especially loved the activity when we had to throw the hoop over the river. We had to build a tripod structure and get the package over to the other side of the lake. It was great fun.” George Burnand 4JM

“I loved Hooke Court - especially the ice cream at the bbq. I had lots of fun collecting bones and other items on the scavenger hunt. The war dancing was also funny.” Charlotte Merralls 4JM

“I really enjoyed my time at Hooke Court; it was exquisite. The activities were exemplary and my favourite activity was bridge building, which meant building and using 2 tripods on either side of the lake and a strong, sturdy rope to pull the log across. I liked the food as well - the bbq was delicious! Overall, Hooke Court was amazing and thank you to the teachers and parent helpers for making it possible.” Will Hakes 4JM

“Hooke Court was one of the best school trips I’ve ever been on. My favourite part was when we built a tripod and all managed to stand on it. The other activity that stood out was the campfire. We sang lots of funny, silly tongue twisters.” Olivia Robinson 4JM

“My adventure to Hooke Court was outstanding. It was as fun as a theme park. I especially loved the teamwork involved in building the zip-wire and trying to get the log to the other side of the lake. Building the wild, delicate structure of the tribes forts was great and then we did the horrifying hacker dance to see which team was the strongest. I would also like to thank the teachers for a magical, memorable time at Hooke Court. It wouldn’t have been possible without them.”

Orienteering Championships

This event took place at Avon Heath Country Park on Friday 10th May, with a 4.30pm start. The children did brilliantly and gained an overall 2nd place.

Individual medals went to Evie Cadwallader, Holly Bunter, Lilla Turner and Pippa Marchant. Great going, girls. Many thanks to Mrs Staehly Powell for her help.

Quadkids at Broadstone

An amazing start to the athletics season for

BPSP!

We took 24 children to the event at

Broadstone Middle School, where all the

children took part in: a 600m race, a 75m

sprint, throwing a howler and a standing long

jump. The competition ended with a ‘face to

face’ fun relay.

BPSP A team won the competition and our B

team was in 8th place out of 15 teams.

Individual results were also impressive -

Zach Richings was the first boy, Oli Small

was second boy, Isobel Weatherly was first

girl and Ava Dove was second girl.

The next round of this competition is on

Tuesday 4th June.

Multi-Skills Festival

The Year 5/6 Multi-Skills Festival was held at

Carter Community School on Friday 3rd

May.

It was a great event for 10 of our children to

experience some skills-based fun activities,

laid on by the School Games organisation.

They all rose to the challenge and had a

great time.

Primary School Games Cycling

A new activity for this year. We took 8 Year

5/6 children to the event run by British

Cycling and after an introduction to the bikes

(provided by British Cycling) they were off!

It was a tough course on grass on unfamiliar

bikes, but the children coped well. A super

event which we will enter again next year.

SPORTS NEWS

YEAR 5 NEWS

Jess in Year 5 has just been awarded the Brownie Gold Award. She is the only Brownie in Dorset to receive this incredible accolade - well done, Jess - what a fantastic achievement!

Thanks to the generosity of Harry’s grandparents, Year 5 are now the proud owners of a fantastic wall map which is already being enjoyed by all the pupils in Year 5.

Picture shows Harry cutting the ribbon to officially open the wall map watched by his dad.

Tennis at Branksome Park

Eight Year 4 children had the opportunity to

take part in a competition aimed at new

players.

Some of the children displayed previously

hidden talents and they all had the chance to

have a free lesson at the club. A great day of

sport!

St Peter’s Church Dalmatian Year! The date is 8

h June, and this is the

101st year of St Peter’s Fayre. Yes 101. Ask your

friends if there is any other annual charity event in Poole that can beat that. Something for you to be really proud of.

Why not suggest to a friend or to your family that the weekend of the Fayre will be an excellent time for them to visit you. We hope that it will be a really happy occasion because, with the ever popular Dog Show, we shall be building on the success established over many years. Since 1918!!

We hope for good weather so that it can be a FUN DAY for all whilst raising much needed funds for our Church. The Fayre aims to bring the Christian Church into the heart of the Parkstone Community. If the weather is impossibly wet the Fayre will probably be held in Church.

There will be children’s rides and attractions, operated commercially and supervised by the owners. There will also be a variety of exhibitors’ and traders’ stalls and the traditional St Peter’s stalls and attractions…..
