Meekatharra Gymkhana
Meekatharra hosted the biggest morning tea on Wednesday 27th May, facilitated by Shire Recreation Officer, Elaine King. This year it was held on the lawn outside the pool. About 50 people attended and donated money to this worthy cause, including our community members from the Meekatharra Hostel. People were very generous with their donations and support with helping out. The morning tea made $438.00.
About the event : Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is one of Cancer Council’s leading fundraising events and the largest, most
successful event of its kind in Australia. Over $60 million has been raised since it first began in 1994
How your money helps Our continued progress depends on the money we receive from individuals like you. Every cup counts.
1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. Last year Australia’s Biggest Morning
Tea raised a mind-boggling $10 million! One dollar at a time you are making a difference helping to fund
Cancer Council’s research, prevention, education and support services.
$10 can contribute to running the Cancer Council Helpline (13 11 20).
$20 can help us train a Cancer Connect volunteer. These volunteers are cancer survivors who provide one
-to-one support for people diagnosed with a similar cancer to themselves.
$50 can help us fund clinical trials, which test new and better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.
$100 can help arrange practical support for our volunteers to make life easier for carers.
$500 can go towards the cost of funding ground-breaking research into the causes of cancer and into new and improved treatments. $49 million was granted to cancer research and research scholarships in 2008 alone.

Karalundi Unveils Honour Board
Karalundi Aboriginal Education Centre
(KAEC) recently unveiled an Honour Board
listing the names of its Chairpersons and
Principals since 1986. This is the first in the
series of events slated this year, being termed
the Year of Recognition, when the school
gives distinction to individuals who have
made significant input in the development of
Karalundi since the early 80’s.
The Honour Board, built through the
volunteer work of former Karalundi principal
Athol Grosse, was unveiled in a simple cer-
emony held on May 10 2009 by four of its
founding members : Ken and Jorna Farmer,
Gladys Ashwin and Joanie Farmer in the
presence of Executive Committee members,
parents and other supporters “Karalundi has
been operating now for 23 years and we’d
like to give due recognition to the founding
members and other key contributors of the
new Karalundi for their support in its
reestablishment,” KAEC CEO David Cowled
said as he recalls the moving tale of
commitment, optimism and determination,
that in the face of the overwhelming odds,
Karalundi has ascended from the ruins of the
old mission and embarked on a better future
for the Indigenous people of the Western
Desert and beyond.
In acknowledging Karalundi’s founding
members, Darren Farmer, former Karalundi
student and Chairperson, underscores the
“…vision and passion they (the founders)
had for wanting to restart Karalundi. Their
dream for a Christian-focused, Aboriginal
governed, education-based community has
been realized.”
Cowled revealed that the Year of Recognition culminates in a proposed Special Recognition Ceremony on the 12th of December 2009, with plans still in the conceptual stage.

On Friday the 8th of May another Meekathar-ra Blue Light Disco was held at the Youth Centre.
This Blue Light was unlike most others with a very special surprise organized for the local kids.
The children of the Blue Light were treated to a magnificent show from two Fire Twirlers, which had come from Carnarvon on the request of the Blue Light Disco committee.
The Fire Twirlers spent the first hour playing with the children showing how to use some of their equipment and teaching the children different tricks.
As the Blue Light Disco got under way the Fire Twirlers left to prepare for the highlight of the night.
At 8:30pm the disco came to and end, the lights were turned off and the children were brought outside to the basketball court.
The children gathered in a circle around the two Fire Twirlers and with a huge flash the show got under way.
The show was amazing with Ooo’s and
Aaah’s coming from every child, it consisted of some daring and dangerous fiery moves, which needed to be seen to be believed.
Unfortunately, there was a very low attendance on the night and a lot of children missed out on what could be the highlight of the year.
On Friday the 12th of June, Blue Light will be holding a ‘Movie Night’ at the local picture gardens. The Movie shown shall be “Journey to the Center of the Earth’ starring Brendan Frasier, only recently been released.
Doors open at 6.45pm and movie is to start at 7pm. Entry fee is $2.00, soft drinks and lollies shall be on sale.

A BIG Congratulations must go to Sarah Tyler, a previous resident of Meekatharra for her graduation
from Murdoch University with a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts with psychology.
Sarah was born in Meekatharra in 1986. Sarah & her family, parents, Frank (Bill) & Vicki & her sister &
brother, Shannon & Zach moved down to Denmark where she started school. The family returned
back to Meekatharra a few years later where Sarah completed most of her Primary schooling at the
Meekatharra District High School. From here
they moved to Geraldton, where Sarah
completed her high school studies at Nagle Cath‐
olic College before heading off to Murdoch Uni‐
versity in 2004.
So Congratulations Sarah, all your hard work has
paid off...Your family are extremely proud of you.
Well Done!!

On Sunday 26th April we said Farewell to one of our valued members of the community & the
Meekatharra Golf Club, David Win. He was our captain & manager of Coates Hire for 6 years. He
only took up golf three years ago, practicing six days a week brought his handicap down to 17. I
will miss him badly as I visited the yard every day mainly to have a yarn & boil the billy for a cuppa.
David has gone to Derby to be with his lovely wife. We all wish him well & hope he gets a job soon. To say goodbye he gave Meacho $50 to buy everyone a
drink!
Rusty
On the 2nd of May, Tony & Doris Norman
held a small gathering out at the breakaways
with close friends & work colleagues to say
goodbye. About 30 RFDS crew came from all
areas of the State for the occasion.
Tony & Doris were presented with a beautiful
photo album with all their magic times they
had in Meeka. They have moved to
Melbourne to join their family.
The people of Meekatharra will miss them
greatly but we wish them all the best!

Return To Meekatharra
Society Update
On Sunday the 5th of April a crowd of
approximately 60 people attended the “Return
To Meekatharra Reunion”. The day was held at
the Pioneer Park in Gosnells, which had the
perfect bush setting for the day. The day was a
great success with more people attending than
originally anticipated.
There were raffles galore on the day with the
main attraction being a beautiful crocheted rug
made by Daphne Hodges which was won by Betty
Gale. Lyn Boladaris (originally from Yandal/
Barwidgie Stations) donated an exquisite
painting of Nullagine which was auctioned off to
the highest secret bidder. This was won by one of the visitors for the day.
The past “Return to Meekatharra” committee
members sat back and enjoyed themselves on the day after doing the organizing for 21 years. The present committee would like to thank
them for all their hard work & input. It was def-
initely another “day to remember”. The crowd
were also entertained by a Murchison identity,
Keith Leithbridge who recited Bush Poetry
throughout the day.
The Committee had an interesting time
renewing friendships, passing on telephone
contacts to many who have moved away, re
-married or just lost details of their ac-
quaintances.
Being on stations & long distances from each
other, the “catch-up times” are always few and far between so there was a lot of tired jaws on
the night!!
Next year the Reunion will be held back in Pinjarra with a new committee. Thelma Biggs
(Originally from Yeleerie Station) has offered to take on the role as Clive Daw is returning to the bush & Marilyn Siggers will be in Tasmania.

Return To Meekatharra
Society Update...Cont... Marilyn Siggers found the following Poem in a book
called “Kimberley Currency” by John Taylor from the 60’s & 70’s in an Op Shop and thought the “Meeka
Dust” readers would like a gander!
“Kurting: Ka” (Place where spirits are)
Don’t BBQ me down South in Karrakatta
Or bury me in cold clay ground
Be sure there ain’t a flutter
No diesel left flowing in me veins.
Get one of my old mates to check
If there’s any still hanging about
And if I do myself in
Don’t die from beer, whisky or rum
Or other causes known to man
Please make sure I’m done
Before poking me underground
Plant me up in the Gascoyne
Warm weather all year round
A place in the shade
Between stockyard and creek
Keeping good company
With Murray and young Tom—both stockmen
And Evan from over the waves
But for God’s sake
Make sure I’m properly gone.

ANIMAL ANTICS Well another month has gone by. Update on the two cruelty cases, sadly the joey had to be put down because of its head injury. Bob the kitten was put down not because of his amputated tail but because of what someone had inserted into his rear end. The injuries were so bad that the kindest thing was to put him down. It was a sad journey back from Geraldton as we both had grown to care for him.
This is not the first time, the first one was a little joey that had the same thing happen to him. Sadly the injuries were the same and it also had to be put down.
Please report if you know or see this happening. Usually it progresses and the biggest fear is, it will then move onto younger children. Obviously this person or persons need help!
On a brighter note, thankyou to Clarrie Lauritsen for rescuing another joey. She beat a dog attack and then an eagle attack. If it hadn’t of been for Clarrie’s quick actions she wouldn’t of been here today. We called her “Docker” because she beat an eagle!
Also thankyou to Jim, Jo & Tom Lacy for rescuing a joey. They went to investigate what some emus where up to and found that they were trying kill a joey.
Last month we sent 8 joeys down to Geraldton. 7 of these have now gone on to a re‐release program. 1 didn’t get there because of his size and the family that had him had kept him too long that he thought his family was the dogs. He has now found permanent care on a farm though.
On a carer’s note, please, I can’t stress enough, don’t feed joey’s cows milk as they are allergic to it.
We also need to be mindful that there is a small number of children running roos into fences. This is happening up at the sport grounds. Please report this to the police if you see this happening.
Well that is all for this month, we are up to 29 joeys so far for this year that have gone on to Geraldton.

Support Craig Goozee in his A2B4C ultra marathon - Donate today!
On May 29th 2009, Sydney father of four, Craig Goozee will set out on the journey of a lifetime. He’s not a famous athlete or a celebrity, yet Craig aims to complete a 12,500km marathon around Australia in an attempt to raise more than $1 million for Children’s Cancer Institute Australia for Medical Research (CCIA).
The journey will take Craig from A to B for C, Australia Square to Bennelong Point for Cancer…the long way round!
Inspired by the courage and determination of his daughter Jessica who lost her battle with cancer in 1999 at the age of nine, Craig will use a combination of running, cycling and ocean paddling to complete the ultra-marathon, which expected to take approximately 95 days
Craig is due to travel to Kumarina on the 15th July and Meekatharra Thursday 16th July so watch out for more news about how the Meekatharra Community can support this initiative to support important research into childhood cancer.

Tamika King, with Tahnee & Bernice Flannigan
and Della Roe went to Kalbarri in May to help form
a group that could meet regularly to discuss issues
including health, violence, housing and crime.
The trip was funded by ICC and about 50 attendees
from Three Springs to Carnarvon participated. It
was a three day work-shop, at the end of which a
committee was formed called SING (Strong
Indigenous Nyralus Group).
Members from each community went home with
ideas of how to address the issues that are of a
concern to them. The SING group will be meeting
regularly to update their progress and possibly do
more workshops.
Our first event here in Meekatharra, which was held
on Thursday 21st May, was a Silent March, starting
at the Youth Centre and walking to the Information
Bay on Main Street. This was a successful
initiative to send the message that violence is
unacceptable and was supported by community
members, service providers and agencies in Meeka-
tharra.
We would like to thank Wayne Abdullah, from
Mission Australia, for taking the organisation on
board and also for providing the community
barbeque after the March. If it wasn’t for Wayne
this event would not have been such a success.
Our next concern will be addressing issues
regarding youth. We will be working alongside
Kids After Dark, the Youth Centre and the School.
If anyone has any concerns or would like to be a
part of SING please contact Tamika King on
Mobile: 0437 894 406.

Spirit for All There are several accounts of the giving of the Spirit in scripture. In Acts 2:1–21 we read how the gift of the Spirit at Pentecost transformed the disciples into a community of faith that was bold to witness publicly about what God was doing in their midst. We also are given Spirit’s gifts of life, empowerment, vision, and strength as we proclaim God’s message of love to all people. In Israel’s tradition, Pentecost was the celebra-tion of the Feast of Weeks, the spring barley har-vest. When the Jews were no longer an agricul-ture-based society, the rabbis gave the festival a new meaning – a commemoration of the giving of the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai. God shaped a new people through the establishing of a cove-nant. As the Church celebrates Pentecost on Sunday 31 May ’09, it is important to keep in mind that we are telling the story of a particular day. It is not that God’s Spirit had never been given before. Throughout scripture, we hear the story of how God has come near to humankind, strengthening and encouraging those who walk in God’s ways. But in this instance, the community has been em-powered in a new way. The Christian community begins with an event celebrating God’s Spirit, present with the people. This community is em-powered by the Spirit to move out into the world, doing God’s work and telling the good news to all. SPIRITUALITY: How would you describe your own spirituality? There are many different understandings of the term spirituality. Books have been written on Celtic spirituality, on women’s spirituality, on a spirituality of ecology and eco-justice. Today there is a revival of interest in matters of the spir-it as people try in various ways to be open to God’s Spirit, to deepen their relationship with God.
Prayer groups, retreats, meditation groups, and opportunities to share stories all provide opportunities to widen our experience. Here is a quotation that may stimulate you as you contemplate your own thoughts on spirituality: Sometimes people get the mistaken notion that spirituality is a separate department of life, the penthouse of our existence. But rightly under-stood, it is a vital awareness that pervades all realms of our being. Someone will say, “I come alive when I listen to music,” or “I come to life when I garden, “or “I come alive when I play golf.” Wherever we come alive, that is the area in which we are spiritual. And then we can say, “I know at least how one is spiritual in that area.” To be vital, awake, aware, in all areas of our lives, is the task that is never accomplished, but it re-mains the goal.
