Today may we affirm our belief in our God of resurrection:

We believe in almighty God, who transforms darkness into light, hatred

into tolerance, despair into hope.

We believe in the risen Christ, who befriends us on our roads of searching

and worry to call us to enter the dance of life.

We believe in the empowering Spirit, who is always renewing the church

and making us a people who practice kindness, encourage beauty and

work for justice and freedom.

We believe we are an Easter people, forgiven and forgiving, called to live

joyfully in hope all our days.

Attention Northwest Plains Churches! We have been approved for the first Summer

Freedom School in our district and would love

to partner with any churches who are inter-

ested in getting involved in this important min-

istry reaching children in the heart of Lima.

The CDF Freedom Schools program provides summer enrichment that helps children fall in

love with reading, increases their self-esteem, and generates more positive attitudes toward

learning. Children are taught using a model curriculum that supports children and families

around five essential components: high quality academic enrichment; parent and family in-

volvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational leadership development;

and nutrition, health and mental health.

The Lima Area Freedom School will be June 13-July 22nd from 8am-3pm, Monday-Friday. It

will be located at South Science and technology Magnet School (one of Lima City School's). We

are open to children who are currently in kindergarten-5th grade. College students and recent

college graduates will serve as Servant Leader Interns and will provide mentoring and leader-

ship to this program. We invite you to consider offering your support. We are looking for

churches, UMW circles, UMM and other church or community groups who are interested in

supporting this ministry by providing breakfasts, snacks, school supplies and financial dona-

tions. If you are interested in learning more about this ministry contact Rev. Megan Croy, Ex-

ecutive Director at 419-227-0800 or [email protected] or check out the website

at http://shawneeum.church/freedom-school/.

First United Methodist Church Youth Launches Shoe Collection

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH YOUTH IS CONDUCTING A SHOE COLLECTION DRIVE FROM MARCH – JULY 1ST to

raise funds for a youth mission trip to Alabama. Youth will earn funds based on the number of pairs

collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated goods. Those dollars will benefit the mission

trip. ANYONE CAN HELP BY DONATING USED OR NEW SHOES AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 113 W. CENTRAL

ST., VAN WERT, OH.

All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise

partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow busi-

nesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds

from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in

Haiti even earned enough to send her son to law school.

“We are excited about our shoe drive," said Teresa Shaffer, youth director. "We know that most people

have extra shoes in their closets they would like to donate to us and help those less fortunate become

self-sufficient. It’s a win-win for everyone,” added Teresa.

Shoe donations will support micro-enterprises in developing nations and also reduce what goes into

landfills

United Course of Study Program Discontinued Students and faculty at United Theological Seminary in Ohio are expressing dis-appointment in a decision by the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry to discontinue a hybrid Course of Study at the seminary on Dec. 31.

The hybrid program, a blend of traditional classrooms and online education, al-lowed students to complete their course work online without spending two weeks on campus, said the Rev. Kent Millard, interim president of United, one of the 13 United Methodist seminaries.

The program began in 2009 as a two-year pilot program with a grant from

the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry

7 practices of John Wesley that change hearts By Roger Ross, UMNS

“God’s spirit created such a holy discontent in John Wesley’s heart that he abandoned conventional

modes of ministry and experimented with several innovative approaches,” writes the Rev. Roger Ross,

senior pastor of First United Methodist Church in Springfield. In a commentary for the Lewis Center for

Church Leadership, he shares Wesleyan practices than can help ministers today.

Why do older leaders fight change? By: My Christian Daily

Fascinating new research provides more insight into why efforts at changing

organizations usually meets with resistance from older leaders and employ-

ees. Up to now, most have attributed the resistance to the fact that older

employees have invested in past ideas and aren’t interested in new ones.

But the Wall Street Journal reports a new finding was discovered in an ef-

fort to track the progress of children who grow up too fast. Here’s what

they found:

17 Truths you need to know about leadership By Brad Lomenick

No matter what level of leadership you find yourself in, it’s important we all have a sense of the big

picture. It’s vital we understand the larger landscape of leadership. So here are a few thoughts on the

state of leadership today.

1. Going forward, work environments and team structures will look more like Hollywood film

crews. People come together for a project but don’t work together full time.

May is Older Americans Month

May is a month of fresh beginnings. Perennials bloom once again, blaz-

ing a trail of bright color. May is also when we celebrate Older Ameri-

can’s Month (OAM), acknowledging the perennial contributions of older

adults to our nation. The 2016 OAM theme is Blaze a Trail. The Admini-

stration for Community Living will use this opportunity to raise aware-

ness about important issues facing older adults. We will also highlight

the ways that older Americans are advocating for themselves, their peers, and their communities.
