Immobilizer System -3-

INTRODUCTION & IMMOBILIZER CONTROL COMPONENTS

The immobilizer controls engine starting along with the engine

control module (ECM). The main system components are the

ICU, the ECM and the transponder key. The immobilizer

system is activated (immobilized) by an incorrectly

programmed or non-programmed transponder key, the ICU or the ECM. While this system is activated, the ECM controls the

fuel injection system and starter cut relay in order to fail to

engine running. An overview of engine starting sequence is

listed below.

1. Transponder key

2. ICU

3. CAN communication bus

4. ECM

5. Anti-theft control unit (with anti-theft system)

1. When the ignition switch is ON, the ICU begins

authentication of the transponder key in the steering

lock. The ICU transmits a specific request signal to the

transponder key and the transponder key sends back a

response signal to the ICU. Both communication signals

are carried out via antenna coil.

2. Because the anti-theft system alarms if a key or other

methods unlock the door, when the transponder key is

correctly authenticated the ICU transmits an alarm

cancel (disarm) signal to the anti-theft control unit. (With

anti-theft system)

3. After the transponder key authentication is completed,

the ICU begins authentication of the ECM. The ECMtransmits a specific request signal to the ICU and the

ICU sends back a response signal to the ECM. Both

communication signals are carried out via a controller

area network (CAN) communication bus.

4. After the ECM authentication is completed, the ECM

enables engine running.

TRANSPONDER KEY

The transponder key accommodates a transponder chip in the

grip portion. The transponder keys have no conventional

power supply. The transponder chip is energized via a high

frequency alternating voltage supplied from an antenna coil

fitted around the steering lock cylinder. Only transponder keythat is correctly programmed key is possible to engine run.

Maximum five transponder keys can be provided by additional

programming.

IMMOBILIZER CONTROL UNIT (ICU)

The ICU is installed to the steering lock. The ICU controls the

immobilizer system by authentication of the transponder key

and the ECM. An antenna coil is a part of the ICU and it is

located around steering key lock cylinder. An antenna coil is

energized when the ICU is performing an authentication of thetransponder key.

ICU Communication

Communication with Scan Tool

The engine control module (ECM), transmission control module

(TCM) (AISIN A/T only) and ICU all communicate with the scan

tool over the controller area network (CAN) link.

Communication with Other Modules

The ECM, TCM, ICU and the data recording module (DRM)

communicate with each other over the same CAN link.

Following signals are communicated via a CAN bus between

the ECM and ICU;

• Immobilizer request signal (from ECM to ICU)

• Immobilizer response signal (from ICU to ECM)

ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)

The ECM is located inside of engine compartment via mounting

bracket and is behind air cleaner case. The ECM mainly

controls the engine control and also exchanges a request

signal and a response signal to an ICU. If fault occurs on

immobilizer system, the ECM sets DTC(s) and illuminates theservice vehicle soon (SVS) lamp (Euro 4 specification) or the

malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) (Except Euro 4 specification).

IMMOBILIZER CONTROL SYSTEM FLOW

STEP 1 (Transponder Key Authentication)

When the ignition switch is ON, the ICU supplies a high

frequency alternating voltage to the antenna coil. The antenna

transmits this alternating voltage to the transponder key (1a) to

energize the transponder chip. After that, the transponder chipsends back the transponder ID code to the ICU via the antenna

coil (1b).

After reading of the transponder ID code, the ICU starts cipher

communication with the transponder key. The ICU calculates a

random number of request signal (1c) that is called “Challenge”

signal. This random number is transmitted to the transponder

key via the antenna coil (1d). Then, the ICU receives the

“Response” signal (1e) matches with the value that the ICU

calculates using the secret key and transmitted random

number “Challenge” signal, the ICU recognizes a cipher

communication is OK (1f).

The transponder ID is key specific code and it must be

programmed into the ICU. During programming of the new

transponder key(s), a secret key is programmed into the

transponder chip and it cannot be reprogrammed again. When

replacing both ICU and ECM at the same time, a new secret

key to be programmed into the newly installed ECM is based

on information of newly installed ICU. However, the

transponder keys cannot be reprogrammed therefore it must be

replaced. Do not replace the ICU and the ECM at the same

time to avoid needless transponder key(s) replacement

simultaneously unless complete damaging was encountered

(e.g. both modules cannot be communicated with a scan tool).

The listed DTCs are associated to the transponder key or

transponder key communication problem.

B0003 Transponder Key Problem:The ICU never receive a response signal from the transponder

key, which is most likely caused by an objects that block

transponder key in the steering lock or ignition switch has been

turned ON without transponder key.

B0008 Wrong Transponder Key:

The ICU receives a wrong response signal from the

transponder key, which is most likely caused by a transponder

key is transferred (swapped) from another vehicle.

B0009 No Transponder Key Programmed:The ICU detects any transponder key is not programmed.

B0010 Unknown Transponder Key:

The ICU receives an unknown response signal from the

transponder key.

B0012 Default Transponder Key:

The ICU detects a default transponder key (non-programmed

new key).

B0013 Previously Erased Transponder:

The ICU detects a response signal that was previously erased

transponder key by some reason.

STEP 2 (Anti-theft System Disarm)

As soon as transponder key authentication has been

completed, the ICU transmits a signal to the anti-theft control

unit (ACU). Because the anti-theft system alarms if a key or

other method unlock the door, when the transponder key is

correctly authenticated the ICU transmits an alarm cancel

(disarm) signal to the ACU (2).

After transponder key authentication has been completed, the

ICU starts cipher communication with the ECM. The ECM

calculates a random number of request signal (3a) that is

called “Challenge” signal (3b). Then, the ECM receives the

“Response” signal (3c) match with the value that the ECM

calculating using secret key and transmitted random number

“Challenge” signal, the ECM recognizes a cipher

communication is OK (3d). Both communication signals (3b &

3c) are carried out via the controller area network (CAN)

communication bus.

The listed DTCs are associated to the ECM communication

problem.

B0007 No Engine Request Received:The ICU never receive a request signal from the ECM within 2

seconds, which is most likely caused by a ECM communication

has been cut or ECM damage.

B0014 Secret Key Error:

The ICU receives a wrong response signal from the ECM,

which is most likely caused by an ECM is transferred

(swapped) from another vehicle.

DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK – IMMOBILIZER

CONTROLS

Description

The Diagnostic System Check – Immobilizer Controls is an organized

approach to identifying a condition that is created by a malfunction in the

electronic immobilizer control system. The Diagnostic System Check

must be the starting point for any immobilizer system concern. The

Diagnostic System Check directs the service technician to the next logical

step in order to diagnose the concern. Understanding and correctly using

the diagnostic table reduces diagnostic time, and prevents the

replacement of good parts.

DIAGNOSTIC STARTING POINT  – IMMOBILIZER

CONTROLS

Begin the system diagnosis with Diagnostic System Check Immobilizer

Controls. The Diagnostic System Check – Immobilizer Controls will

provide the following information:

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

2. Lack of communication may be because of a partial or a total

malfunction of the controller area network (CAN) serial data circuit. The

specified procedure determines the particular condition.

6. The presence of DTCs which begin with U, indicate that some other

module is not communicating.

9. If there are other modules with DTCs set, refer to the DTC list. The

DTC list directs you to the appropriate diagnostic procedure.

• The identification of the control modules which command the system.

• The ability of the control modules to communicate through the serial

data circuit.

• The identification of any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and

the their statuses.

The use of the Diagnostic System Check – Immobilizer Controls will

identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the

procedure is located.

Important!

• DO NOT perform this diagnostic if there is not an immobilizer

system concern, unless another procedure directs you to this

diagnostic.

• Before you proceed with diagnosis, search for applicable servicebulletins.

• Unless a diagnostic procedure instructs you, DO NOT clear the

DTCs.

• Ensure the battery has a full charge.

• Ensure the battery cables (+) (-) are clean and tight.

• Ensure the ICU grounds are clean, tight, and in the correct location.

• Ensure the ICU harness connector is clean and correctly connected.

• Ensure the ICU terminals are clean and correctly mating.

• Ensure the immobilizer security information correctly programmedinto the ICU and ECM.

• Ensure the ICU is correctly installed to the steering lock.

• Ensure objects does not block transponder key in the steering lock.

• Ensure another transponder key is not attached to the key ring.

RESETTING & PROGRAMMING GUIDELINES

• Vehicle security information card to a new owner.

• Blank vehicle security information card it is for reissue.• Instruct to your dealership how to use it.

Vehicle Security Information Card (If issued)

When performing ICU, ECM or transponder key(s) resetting or

programming functions using a scan tool, you will be prompted

to enter four digits of security code (1). This information is

found on the vehicle security information card issued with the

vehicle when new. If the card is unavailable, contact a

distributor’s service department to obtain the relevant securitycode. For new owners, distributor or dealership must provide

vehicle security information card that has identification

numbers of owner’s vehicle immobilizer system. This

information is very important in case of repair or transponder

key is lost. It is necessary to provide following items in your

responsibility.

RESETTING & PROGRAMMING

Notice!

The security information must be programmed when the ICU,

ECM or transponder key(s) is replaced, or transponder key(s)

is added.

1. Security code

• The data requested under items 1 to 10 must be provided

completely, including the authorized dealership number, the

vehicle identification number (VIN) and engine type/ number.

• Complete the form by entering data and signature/

authorized dealership stamp and send it along with proof of

ownership to address provided in the form.• The requested data will be sent by fax to dealership that

made the request after your organization has confirmed that

the information is correct.

Your organization must keep security code for all vehicles as

confidential data. In case of vehicle security information card is

lost, the data can be requested from a distributor’s service

department. This request will only be processed if

accompanied by the enclosed form and proof of ownership.

Once the data is received, it can be entered in a blank card and

given to the customer. The unused card should be destroyed.

Instructions on filling out the Data Request Vehicle Security

Information Card as follows.

Security Code

The security code is required when performing ICU, ECM or

transponder key(s) resetting or programming functions. When

a scan tool requests the security code to be entered, and an

incorrect code is entered, the ICU or ECM will go into a security

wait time stage. This wait time stage will prevent any further

attempts to enter the security code until the wait t ime has

elapsed. Should a second incorrect security code be entered

after the initial wait time has elapsed, the ICU or ECM will go

into a second wait time stage. The wait time will increase each

time an incorrect code is entered. When the correct code is

entered the wait time will reset back to its original value of 10

seconds.

• Stage 1 = 10 seconds

• Stage 2 = 10 seconds

• Stage 3 = 10 minutes

• Stage 4 = 20 minutes

• Stage 5 = 40 minutes

• Stage 6 = 80 minutes (1 hour 20 minutes)

• Stage 7 = 160 minutes (2 hours 40 minutes)

• Stage 8 = 320 minutes (5 hours 20 minutes)

• Stage 9 = 640 minutes (10 hours 40 minutes)

• Stage 10 = 1280 minutes (21 hours 20 minutes)

Notice!

The ignition switch must be kept at ON position during the

wait time period.

Transponder Key

Normally two or three transponder keys are provided with a

vehicle when new. Maximum five transponder keys can be

provided by additional programming if owner requests

additional key(s).

Notice!

During programming of the new transponder key(s), an

authentication code is programmed into the transponder chip

and it cannot be reprogrammed again. Once this

programming has been performed, the transponder keys

cannot be installed in any other vehicle.

Notice!

Keep away another key, another transponder key, keynumber plate or other metal items from the transponder key

that is going to program. Otherwise, transponder key(s)

programming may be failed.
