Order of B.C. Biography

It has been said of Joseph Segal – if there is a good and noble cause, he is there.

“”

Joe Segal told us, “I don’t want the attention.” He insisted, “There are others more deserving of the spotlight.” But this time, we respectfully begged to differ.

In the end, Joe agreed to our proposed fête on one condition: it had to have a charitable purpose – a worthy cause that helps our city’s most vulnerable citizens. He had us right where he wanted us. We couldn’t refuse. And that’s how the deal got done.

WELCOME TO JOE SEGAL – AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFE, A VANCOUVER BOARD OF TRADE GALA BENEFITING COAST MENTAL HEALTH.

Like Joe, the tribute we have prepared is spirited and one-of-a-kind – a celebration of a community builder, humanitarian, leader, achiever and friend whose zest for life, drive and courageous and giving heart has endeared him to so many.

We hope you have fun this evening and along the way gain some insight and perhaps even learn some life lessons from a true master with a deft human touch.

We are grateful to everyone who has made this evening and its significant charitable impact a reality – from the Vancouver Board of Trade’s events team and Coast Mental Health’s staff and volunteers who have invested long hours behind the scenes to our skilled executive producer MVKA Productions and talented stage producer Infinity Films Entertainment Group who have set the stage for an exceptional evening.

We would also like to thank the organizations across Vancouver’s business community as well as our media partners, especially the Vancouver Sun, for helping us spread the word and rally support.

We extend our deepest appreciation to the friends and colleagues who stepped up in significant ways, not only giving generously through sponsorship, table and ticket purchases, but who engaged their networks and made calls to other caring companies, organizations and individuals who have also risen to the occasion.

Most of all, we say thanks to you Joe for giving us this opportunity to show you that we appreciate all that you do. What can we say: you inspire us.

Ian Gillespie, Westbank

In a world of both incredible turmoil and opportunity, it is important to acknowledge that we all stand on the shoulders of our mentors. Joe has broad shoulders.

Joe once remarked he asked God to let him live to 100 so he could finish his work here on Earth. We believe he could do better, and pray he lives to 200.

Joe has been and continues to be a positive influence to so many of us here in Vancouver. His leadership in the business community as a catalyst for philanthropy is simply unmatched.

Joe’s tireless commitment to building better communities through ongoing mentorship, generous philanthropy and as a patriarch of the city has created a shining legacy that continues to be a true inspiration.

Throughout his career, Joe has shown how business success and philanthropy go hand in hand. Through his unfailing commitment to giving back, Joe continues to set a standard we can all aspire to reach.

6 • June 4, 2013 JOE SEGAL – AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFE

Lindsay Gordon, HSBC Bank Canada

To quote Joe: ‘Money is just a byproduct of success. Happiness is the true measure of success.’ Joe is an inspiration to so many and a national treasure. Here’s to 88 wonderful years!

Lunches with Joe are always insightful, entertaining and most importantly, enjoyable. No matter what the topic, Joe always checks in and asks... ’Are you happy, is your family happy? That’s what is important, Rick. If you’re not happy, nothing else really matters.’... I’m one of the lucky ones, we are happy.

Chairing this gala has revealed in new ways – even to me – the deep respect people hold for you. They leapt at a chance to say, “Thanks, Joe,” and they pitched in freely to help make this gala’s charitable impact one you would be proud of. I now know it’s not just me; In all of our hearts, you are a hero.

Joe is the most generous person with his time, wealth and wisdom.
