May is a very busy month with field days, DEA testing, field trips, and continued instruction. Many thanks to all the parents, students, and staff who made our Evening of the Arts the very best ever!! Your children’s creativity was amazing, and our Oval Art volunteers, parents, and Angela Wilkerson, chairman, planned a perfect event. According to researcher, Dr. Ruth Peters, “All students experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer.” Depending on the child, this loss can be anywhere from 1-3 months of instruction. So, here are a few things you can do: 1. Visit the library to check out books. Plew’s media center will be open from 9-12 with the days posted on our website. Children will be able to take AR tests. 2. When on vacation, have children keep a journal on their activities. Have them use MapQuest to plan the travel route and calculate mileage. 4. Play games to review math facts. Play card games where your child has to use his or her math skills. 5. Visit our local sites e.g. Turkey Creek , the Heritage Museum in Valparaiso, etc. and explore with your child. As always, during the summer we will be doing a lot of maintenance work. The upper grade bathrooms and some classrooms, doors and soffits will be painted, some classroom blinds will be replaced, etc. As the budget allows, improvements are made. It was nice to listen to the beautiful music of the Ruckel Jazz Band, Monica and Maddie on the violin and the music of Olivia and Meredith Glaze. I hope all who attended were able to find something to bring home from the silent auction and the gallery store. We had many lovely items donated from the classrooms and the community. Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that we only have 4+ weeks of school. May is a very busy month with field

days, DEA testing, field trips, and continued instruction. Many thanks to all the parents, students,

and staff who made our Evening of the Arts the very best ever!! Your children’s creativity was

amazing, and our Oval Art volunteers, parents, and Angela Wilkerson, chairman, planned a

perfect event.

As the year ends, I want to remind parents that summer learning loss is a very real problem.

According to researcher, Dr. Ruth Peters, “All students experience learning losses when they do

not engage in educational activities during the summer.” Depending on the child, this loss can be

anywhere from 1-3 months of instruction. So, here are a few things you can do:

1. Visit the library to check out books. Plew’s media center will be open from 9-12 with the days

posted on our website. Children will be able to take AR tests.

2. Barnes and Noble is offering summer reading activities including a free activity kit and a free

book for every 8 books read. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/summer-reading/379003570/

3. When on vacation, have children keep a journal on their activities. Have them use MapQuest

to plan the travel route and calculate mileage.

4. Play games to review math facts. Play card games where your child has to use his or her math

skills.

5. Visit our local sites e.g. Turkey Creek , the Heritage Museum in Valparaiso, etc. and explore

with your child.

As always, during the summer we will be doing a lot of maintenance work. The upper grade

bathrooms and some classrooms, doors and soffits will be painted, some classroom blinds will be

replaced, etc. As the budget allows, improvements are made. Plew is a lovely campus, and my

intent is to keep it that way.

I wish all of you a very happy and safe summer. Remember school begins on August 19th!

bring home from the silent auction and the gallery store. We had many lovely items donated from

the classrooms and the community.

I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to each

volunteer, teacher, faculty member, and sponsor

who made the Evening of the Arts possible for

the students of Plew Elementary. It is your

selfless dedication to our students’ education that made

this event and our OVAL Art program possible. Thank you for helping

our children experience the joy of art. I know they will carry these

experiences into the future education and beyond.

Angie Wilkerson,

Evening of the

Arts Chair

5th grade Science Fair Projects will be on display May 13-17 in the Media Center. Come and see what the BIG kids have been learning!

ALL library books are due May 22nd. There will no more checkouts after the 17th of May. The Media Center will close for the school year on May 22nd for inventory. Look high and low, and let’s get those library books returned on time!!

Thank you to all who stopped by during Evening of the Arts and left sporting a cool Glitteroo or two!! We raised $350 for new library books. Your support of our efforts is greatly appreci-ated!!

Perused Pages Sale (formerly known as the Used Book Sale) will be May 30th and 31st. More information to follow in backpacks. We are still in need of your donations of gently used chil-dren’s books. The children love being able to buy their “own” books, and the price is just right! We welcome your donations in the Media Center any time.

Thank you for a wonderful year of reading and growing. Our summer hours will be published soon…
