Standing Out from the Crowd – The Touch of Faith

Touching is an activity that is very common among human being and animals; in fact it is difficult not to touch or be touched. It has to do with coming into contact with somebody or something. This is what we experi-ence in hugs, handshakes and others. There is another sense in which touch succeeds physical touch; this is where the mind, soul and spirit are involved. We often say that we are touched by what we heard, saw, imagined, thought and so on. This Sunday we are reflecting on the healing touch of Jesus Christ. We are reflecting on how a physical touch can effect total healing working on the platform of faith. The gospel begins with the information that Jesus Christ crossed over to the other side with his disciples. “Crossing over to the other side” is reflected in several places in the gospels. Wherever we see it occurring there is always an indication that something very im-portant will be taking place. Jesus would always cross over to the other side to save a situation, to heal, to teach or to show forth the active power of God. We saw him last Sunday crossing over to the other side with his disci-ples when they encountered a storm at the middle of the sea.

There is so much I love about this gospel, not least of which is the fact that it centers on the embodied experiences of a girl and a woman. It is a girl who falls ill, a woman who bleeds, a daughter who suffers and dies too soon and a daughter whose intimate bodily suffering renders her an outcast. From the Gospel Reading, we could see that there was no prior appointment nor plan between the woman with the hemorrhages and Jarius. What they did was to stand out from the crowd and make their appointment with Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us. Every day, Jesus comes over to the other side of our lives. Often, we do not notice him and at other times we pre-fer to move along with the crowd without making an effort to stand out from the crowd and experience him in a personal way as the woman and Jarius. Faith does not make things easier; it makes things possible. The woman’s faith had to be tried by her struggle to reach to the clothing of Jesus Christ. The faith of Jarius had to go through the trial of interruption by the woman with the issue of blood and the message of the death of his child. On our journey through life, we may struggle with many trials, maintain your faith and do not give up.

The details about the woman show that she did not touch the body of Jesus but his clothes; some transla-tions would say the fringe or hem of his garment. Other people were standing close to our Lord and may have touched his hands or any other part of his body, but nothing happened. This woman touched just the clothes with faith, and her story changed. The touch Jesus received was significantly different from the ones he had been re-ceiving so he stopped and asked who touched me! This might have appeared to be a senseless question as the dis-ciples established. This was because the crowd was so much and many people were pressing round him. But Je-sus was right; someone actually touched him in a way that was different from others. Now there were different types of touch that Jesus Christ received on that day. There is the familiarity touch. Some people purposefully touched Jesus in that crowd to establish that they were familiar with him. In our day and age such people would stand beside Jesus and take pictures (selfies). Those who made this kind of touch remained the same; nothing happened.

We have the accidental touch. Some people touched Jesus accidentally. They didn’t know that they actu-ally touched him. In the midst of the pushing and struggling in the crowd some people accidentally made touches on Jesus Christ but nothing happened. There is the faith touch. Among all in the crowd only one person purpose-fully made a touch of faith on Jesus Christ. The pain of twelve years turned into pay, the challenge of twelve years became a chance and the stumbling block of twelve years became a stepping stone.

Both the girl and the woman were healed by Jesus because of faith – the faith of the girl’s father and the faith of the woman with the hemorrhages. Both received healing because they touched or were touched by Jesus. Whether in the celebration of the sacraments or in our exercise of the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, Je-sus shows us the importance of a faith that is lived and experienced through the human senses. Remember that God created us in his image, and God said that it was good.

Let us pray – Father, we thank you for the gift of your grace that flows into our lives, bringing us into life more fully. Help us to be free of the fear and anxiety that comes from doubting your presence. Help us to grow in a greater awareness of your gifts. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Please stay safe and healthy! I love you and I miss you! Fr. Q, OMI

MAGNIFICAT SUBSCRIPTION

Anyone wishing to purchase a subscription or continue their sub-scription to MAGNIFICAT, a monthly book that includes the daily readings as well as morning

and evening prayers, can do so by coming to the rectory to sign up. A payment of $35.00 must be prepaid before August 1, 2021, so that we may order the correct amount of books. The current subscription expires with the September issue.

Once again it is time for all volunteers involved in any aspect of parish life to come to the rectory during business hours to fill out a CORI form and to sign a “Code of Ministerial Behavior “ form. The following is a directive from the Archdiocese regarding the CORI reform law: To facilitate the CORI reform law signed by the Governor of the Commonwealth, the Department of Criminal Infor-mation Services recently put a new CORI access sys-tem in place. This system called CORI requires that all individuals provide the last 6 digits of their Social Security Number along with other information re-quired on the CORI request form. The form content is sent to the Archdiocese by the Commonwealth for use in requesting CORI. The Archdiocese is certified to access the background of all clergy, seminarians, school personnel including educators, staff and volunteers, designated parish vol-unteers, paid parish staff and Pastoral Center staff. The Archdiocese is required to carry out the CORI process within the confines of the regulations put forth by the CORI Unit. We appreciate the cooperation of all those required to complete the annual CORI and we particularly thank you for keeping the pledge to protect those among us who are most vulnerable.

Adult Faith Learning Experiences - August 2021

St. William’s Church will once again be hosting a series for adult learners on the “Eucharist” followed by sessions on “The Mass”. This will be a three-part program with the first night focusing on the Eucharist. On the second and third nights we will be looking at the meaning and elements of our Mass, the central expression of our faith. It will be led by Deacon Tom Walsh. Each of our sessions will begin with video presenta-tions on specific sub-topics and presentations by the group leader, followed by discussions on what was presented. The direction of the discussion on each element of the presentations will be primarily group determined. The presentations will be on Monday evenings start-ing at 7:00 PM in the Lower Church. The dates and topics of the presentations are as follows: Monday, August 9- Eucharist Monday, August 16- The Mass Part 1 Monday, August 23- The Mass Part 2

Interested participants are encouraged to pick and choose the subjects of greatest interest or relevance to their needs and interests. It is suggested that partici-pants attempt to come to both sessions two and three to receive the greatest benefit from these programs. Donations to cover costs will be free will and can be made at any of the presentations. Prior registration, while not necessary, is encouraged to allow for best planning. Please feel free to visit us as you are able. We look forward to an interesting and informative series. Please contact the rectory to express interest, 978-851-7331 or email: [email protected]

Please consider adding St. William’s Parish in your will.

Many of us go away on vacation for a week or two in the summer. That’s evident here at the church in a drop in attendance at Mass (understandably), and in lower collections. Some, “make up” for missed dona-tions to the Sunday collection when you get back – and that’s admirable. Others, intend to, but for-get. With WeShare that problem goes away – your offerings go to support Saint William ’s whether you’re here at Mass that week or not. Thank you for your support!
