(BES):Blackberry Enterprise server.

• E-mail system.• The software monitors the user's local "inbox.”• The versions that BES offer are: Microsoft Exchange,

Lotus Domino, and Novell GroupWise.• It is usually run by multiple wireless users. Individual

users can use e-mail services provided by the wireless provider and may not be required to install a BES server.

• Every BlackBerry has a unique id called BlackBerry PIN which is used to identify your device to the BES.

• Provides security through firewalls and block ciphers (codes)

PUSH PROCEDURE When a new message comes into the inbox, it picks up

the message and passes it to Network Operations Center.

The messages are then relayed to the user's wireless provider, which in turn delivers them to the user's BlackBerry device.

All new e-mails, contacts and calendar entries are pushed to the BlackBerry device automatically.

Device storage allows the mobile user to access all data offline in areas without wireless service.

As soon as the user connects again, the BES sends the latest data.

(MSD) MOBILE SERVICE DATA Used to allow secure transfer of applications and

information to other devices (not necessarily other Blackberries). Also used to connect to the internet.

It is no longer a requirement for wireless data access because of the new versions of the Blackberry.

Blackberry devices can now access the internet without the use of MSD.

It is still required for secure e-mail, data access, and applications that require WAP from carriers that do not allow WAP access.

Competition Many competitors are entering the

Smartphone market, which is lowering Blackberry’s sales and cutting off Blackberry’s monopoly in that section of the phone market.

Most of them have a lot of features that are found on the Blackberry: email, fast processors, web browsing, full keyboard.

They are giving there products an edge, to keep them unique and give them an advantage over competitors.
