COMPUTER NETWORKING

TOPICS COVERED :

Networking

Definition , Important Terms

Topology

Definition, It’s Types

Types of networking in accordance to

the geographical area covered.

Internet

1.NETWORKING Networking refers to the interconnection of two or more computers in one or

another

way by any media (wired/wireless) for the purpose of sharing information or

resources.

Concept of Nodes And PCs.

Here in the picture , all the

computers are connected to each

other . Therefore ,We’ll refer these

computers as NODES and not as

PCs.

But here, there’s only one computer

and that too a stand alone one.

Therefore , we’ll refer this computer

as PC(personal computer) as it not

connected with any other computer.

NETWORK

INTERFACE

CARD : It is used to store the address of a

particular node.

SERVER:A server is a main computer in a network that stores and processes all the data and information.

CLIENT/WORK

STATION : They refer to the single

individual computer in the network from

where the request for the information is

made.

TOPOLOGY : In communication network, a topology is usually a

schematic description of the arrangement of a network , including its nodes

and connecting lines.

TYPES OF TOPOLOGIES:

I. BUS TOPOLOGY

1. LAN : It refers to

Local Area Network

where groups of

computers are

connected within a

limited geographical

area, such as

schools, colleges ,

etc.

2. MAN : It refers to

Metropolitan Area

Network where

different LAN’s

available in different

metros like Delhi,

Mumbai, Chennai,

etc. , are connected

III. WAN : It refers

to Wide Area Network where computers are connected / networked across big geographical area. In other words they connect LAN’s b/w different locations. For example: computer or devices in a branch office could connect to the computer network at the head office through telephone lines or satellites.

The Internet is a global

system of

interconnected computer

networks that use the

standard Internet protocol

suite (TCP/IP) to link several

billion devices worldwide.

It is an international network

of networks that consists of

millions of private, public,

academic, business, and

government packet

switched networks, linked by

a broad array of electronic,

wireless, and optical
