    FOUR-HOUR FIGHT

A fishing trip down memory laneRealtor, father return from north end of Vancouver Island with 19-kilogramchinook — just like the one they caught in 1969 BY GERRY BELLETT, Vancouver SunThere’s nothing more charmingthan fishing stories, and everyfather and son who ever dippedrods in the water together willhave their favourites. Realtor TomHassan and his dad Les, a retiredNorth Shore doctor, are noexception. On Tuesday, theyreturned from a four-day fishingtrip to Quatsino Lodge on the northend of Vancouver Island aftercatching a 19-kilogram (42-pound)chinook. For Tom, it brought backmemories of his most memorableday’s fishing — a summer night inPender Harbour long ago when heand his dad and his older brotherDoug pulled in another 42-pounder after a four-hour battle.Hassan was only five at the timeand the monster they hauled intotheir boat that night was almostas big as him. “That was the firsttime my father and I pulled in a fishthat size and 43 years later we’vemanaged to do it again,” saidHassan. A lot of fishing trips havecome and gone since that night in1969. “Fishing was a big part of ourfamily life. It ’s been a pastime

since I was five and it wassomething that’s bonded us,” saidHassan. Five years ago, his dadsuffered a stroke that limited hisactivities and when Hassan tookhim fishing last year, it was a bit ofa challenge. “He’s quite frail andlast year he wouldn’t even pick upa rod,” he said. But this year, afterthe operators of Quatsino Lodgeinstalled a special chair in thestern of one of their fishing boats, father and son could once againenjoy fishing together. “It’s not thesame watching someone elsefish. Dad is unable to stand up inthe boat, but with the chair hecould sit down and land a fish. “At78, he was the first guy in the boatto see we had a fish on the line —the rest of us were just sittingthere eating peanuts,” he said. Each of the four days they fishedthey caught their limit and bothcame home with plenty ofchinook and coho. But no fishingexperience could surpass thatnight in Pender Harbour when he,eight-year-old Doug and their dadwent out for something to do

before the two brothers were putto bed. “We left at about six orseven o’clock and right insidePender Harbour we had a fish onthe line. It took us four hours toland it in the dark because wewere only fishing with a 12-poundtest line. “I’ll never forget it. In theend the fish came off the line but itwas so exhausted that it lay on thesurface and dad and Doug scoopedit into the boat.” This was in thedays before cellphones so whilethey fought the fish, Hassan saidhis mom was ashore worrying whythey hadn’t returned before dark.“She thought the boat had sunk soshe was very relieved to see us andthe big fish we had,” he said. Theirfishing tale would make the pagesof The Vancouver Sun along with apicture of the two brothers sharinga bathtub with the fish. “The weekbefore, my dad had entered TheVancouver Sun Fishing Derby andhadn’t caught a thing,” Hassansaid. “Then we caught this fish. Itwould easily have won first prize ifwe had landed it a week earlier,”he added. [email protected]
