The Mission Episcopate of Saints Francis and Clare, a Eucharistic Community in the Liberal Catholic Tradition.

LITURGICAL CALENDAR 2015

A NOTE ON THE HEADINGS USED

“CELEBRATION.” The significance of the colour of the font is as follows,

BLACK—signifies celebrations from the calendar of the Liberal Catholic Church.

BLUE—signifies celebrations from the calendar of the Order of Maria Rosa Mystica.

BROWN—signifies celebrations from the calendar of the Franciscan Order.

RED—signifies celebrations added by the MESFC.

GREEN entries refer to the Roman Catholic Church.

ITALICS---indicates that the celebration has an “octave”, i.e. is generally celebrated for eight days inclusively. (But see the

note below on octaves.)

“PROPER”

This column refers the reader to the numbered notes below.

“COLOUR”

This column indicates the colour of the vestments prescribed for the celebration.

White may take the place of all colours, except there should be a violet stole for use where prescribed. Cloth of Gold may

always take the place of white, red or green vestments, but not of violet. Rose may be used on Advent 3 and Lent 4. Blue

may be used on Marian feasts and in Advent.

2

“CLASS”

This signifies the rank of the celebration, and is a simplified version of the LCC rules as adapted by the MESFC.

If two or more celebrations fall on the same date, the one of higher rank is used and the collect of the lower celebration is

added. (A is higher than B etc.)

If two or more celebrations of the same rank fall on the same date, the celebrant may choose which one to use, and again, the

collect of the lower celebration is added.

In the case of festivals having octaves, only the festival itself and any Sunday within the Octave which lacks an alternative

celebration need be celebrated, and any or all of the remaining seven days may be abandoned.

All Souls interrupts the octave of All Saints, which, if observed, may then resume.

A NOTE ON THE NUMBER OF CANDLES USED

The MESFC has simplified the LCC rules.

Celebrations of class C require the use of at least two candles on the altar at Mass, and preferably six.

Those of class B require six.

Those of Class A should, as a matter of preference, have more than six, and those with an octave, even more.

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE USE OF COLLECTS, EPISTLES, GRADUALS, GOSPELS AND PREFACES.

1. The Collect or Collects and the colour of vestments used at any service commencing at or after 6 P.M. will be those of the

Day following. Should Complin be conducted in the evening the Epistle and Gospel of the Day following will be read as the

Lessons.

2. In general the Collect, Epistle and Gospel assigned to a Sunday, as well as the colour of the vestments worn on that Sunday,

are used throughout the remaining six weekday services, unless as is frequently the case some Festival intervenes which

takes precedence. The exceptions to this general rule appear herein.

3

3. When the Octaves of Festivals are observed, the Collect, Epistle and Gospel are said for seven days after. For the MESFC, in

the case of festivals having octaves, only the festival itself need be celebrated and any or all of the remaining seven days may

be abandoned. All Souls interrupts the octave of All Saints, which, if observed, may then resume.

4. In general, unless it has an Octave, the Collect, Epistle and Gospel assigned to a Festival, or Holy Day, as well as the colour

of the vestments worn, are used on that Day only.

5. If some greater Festival takes precedence, then the Collect alone of the lesser one is said after that of the greater.

6. If two Festivals of equal rank coincide, the priest decides which he will commemorate.

7. (LCC: If, however, two Festivals of Class A should coincide, the Ordinary may issue instructions as to which is to be

commemorated, and may direct that the other be transferred to some convenient date. MESFC: If two or more celebrations

of the same rank, including Class A, fall on the same date, the celebrant may choose which one to use, and the collect of the

lower celebration is added.)

8. The Gradual may be omitted if the Epistle and Gospel are omitted, but it is preferable that it be retained.

SPECIAL CASES.

9. The Collect for Advent Sunday is said after the Collect of the Day at every service during the Advent Season until Christmas

Eve.

10. The Collect, Epistle and Gospel for Christmas Day are said every day until New Year’s Eve. A special or proper Gradual is

prescribed for Christmas Day and seven days after. A special or proper Preface is inserted between the first and second

paragraphs of the regular Preface on Christmas Day and seven days after.

11. On New Year’s Day alone the Collect for Christmas is said after that of the Day.

4

12. The Collect, Epistle and Gospel for New Year’s Day are said every day until the Epiphany.

13. The Collect, Epistle and Gospel for the Epiphany are said every day until the Second Sunday after the Epiphany.

14. The Collect for the First Day in Lent is said every day during the Lenten season after the Collect for the Day, but the Epistle

and Gospel are said only until the first Sunday in Lent.

15. The Collect for Easter Sunday is said up to and including the first Sunday after Easter, while the Epistle and Gospel are said

until that Sunday. A special or proper Gradual is prescribed for Easter Day and until Ascension. A special or proper Preface

is inserted between the first and second paragraphs of the regular Preface on Easter Day and seven days after.

16. The Collect, Epistle and Gospel for Ascension Day are said for nine days after or until Whitsunday. A special or proper

Gradual is prescribed for Ascension Day and nine days after. A special or proper Preface is inserted between the first and

second paragraphs of the regular Preface on Ascension Day and nine days after;

17. A special or proper Gradual is prescribed for Whitsunday and six days after. A special or proper Preface is inserted between

the first and second paragraphs of the regular Preface on Whitsunday and six days after.

18. A special or proper Gradual is prescribed for Trinity Sunday. A special or proper Preface is inserted between the first and

second paragraphs of the regular Preface on Trinity Sunday. (It should be noted that the words Holy Father are omitted

from the Preface on Trinity Sunday.)

19. The Collect, Epistle and Gospel for Corpus Christi are said until the Second Sunday after Trinity.

20. The Collect, Epistle and Gospel of All Saints’ Day are said for seven days after, except that on All Souls’ Day the Collect

alone is said after the Collect for that Day.

21. A special or proper Gradual is prescribed for Festivals of Our Lady. A special or proper Preface is inserted between the first

and second paragraphs of the regular Preface on Festivals of Our Lady

5

22. A special or proper Gradual is prescribed for Festivals of the Angels. A special or proper Preface is inserted between the first

and second paragraphs of the regular Preface on Festivals of the Angels.

23. A special or proper Gradual is prescribed for the Requiem Eucharist

24. A special or proper Gradual is prescribed for the Nuptial Eucharist.

25. The Collect, Epistle and Gospel of the Patron Saint of a Church or Country are said in that Church or Country on the Festival

of the Saint and seven days after: that is, such Festival has an Octave in such Church or Country.
