VISION & MISSION

IPEI believes the education of every

student in the ICSD is enhanced

through community connections

and support that IPEI facilitates

for students and teachers through

engagement, collaboration, gifts,

and grants.

IPEI stands for many things. Innovate,

pilot, parent. Engage, enrich, invigorate.

This past year has been filled with all

of these things. On these pages we

would like to share with you who we

are and what is ahead.

On behalf of the IPEI board, I invite you to learn more about our “initiative”. We take very seriously our mission to enhance the educational experience for all Ithaca students and to help our school district to be world-class.

IPEI was created over 15 years ago by a group of local citizens including business people, parents and educators who saw the need for more community connections and private relationships in support of the Ithaca City School District. Stories about the founding and development of IPEI provide inspiration to all of us with IPEI, and hopefully to you!

IPEI’s impact continues to grow as it provides grants and other assistance to teachers who then inspire their students. Since 1996, 1,100 grants totaling $1,300,000 have been awarded due to the generous support of individuals and organizations making donations or partnering with IPEI.

Today our focus continues on teaching and learning experiences through grants for exciting innovative projects, and on Kids Discover the Trail!. IPEI programs bring resources into the classrooms and connect students with the world outside their classrooms.

Please consider making a gift to IPEI and/or getting involved with the schools or with IPEI. We are very grateful to all who have participated over the years. Together we make an even bigger difference for our students and teachers!

Sincerely,

Terry Byrnes President

INSPIRE

“ The students gained even more than we hoped. I am more inspired to teach, to be more creative, and expect more from my students. Thank you!” —Teacher Grant Recipient

GRANT PROGRAMSIPEI brings a wide variety of truly exceptional community resources into the district’s classrooms that enhance the educational experience for all students. We support teachers who have great ideas on how to make their curriculum come alive and be even more relevant. That breathes life into our mission: connecting students and teachers with the world outside the classroom. Students tell us these experiences help relate what they study with what they may do in the future, thus broadening their horizons.

Belle Sherman Elementary School teacher Monica Lang used an IPEI grant to bring author Anne Mazer to her class: “Anne’s visit was motivating and extremely inspiring to our third graders. Most importantly, they came to realize that the work they had just done in their own fictional writing was the exact same process that Anne and all published authors use.” Mazer concurred, saying, “We’re all engaged in the same creative process. I love that ‘aha!’ moment when kids realize that writing isn’t something that ‘only professionals do.’ “ Mazer commended Lang, “who knows how to inspire children with a love of reading and writing.”

Lily Yeh, an international artist working for social change, visited Cornell, Ithaca High School, and TST BOCES to share her message of using the arts as a tool for community building and transformation. Her visit was part of a larger celebration of Cornell University’s Center for Transformative Action’s 40th Anniversary. The Fine Arts Booster Group supported her presentation at Ithaca High and encouraged district teachers to attend the TST BOCES workshop. Ithaca High art teacher, Carol Spence, stated, “We want students to experience ‘why art’ and connect to the larger community. Lily Yeh’s inspiration planted the seed of taking art outside of the classroom assign- ment mindset.”

TEACHER GRANTS

Teacher Grants are an excellent way to inspire students, and introduce our community’s wonderful resources. Teachers apply with innovative classroom project ideas that involve a community partner and link with academics. A Community Partner is any individual, business, organization, or college department interested in working with a teacher on a class-room project or activity. We welcome potential community partners with ideas of how to work with teachers and students.

“Co-curricular activities are integral for 21st century learning. IPEI helps by connecting teachers with community partners and organizations and by allocating funds to enhance teaching and learning.” —IPEI Vice President Jennifer Engel

Cayuga Heights Elementary School instrumental music teacher Heather Pemberton wanted to introduce her students to new, contemporary composers as well as classical ones last year. Bill Calhoun, a retired music teacher, composer and local community member, became email pen-pals during the weeks before his visit. They asked him questions about the pieces’ musical style, technique, and how he composed the music as they were learning the piece. Calhoun conducted an orchestra rehearsal at the school giving the students a chance to interact with him personally. After working with the students on several run-throughs of the composition, Calhoun asked if the students had any questions for him and many hands flew up. The questions ranged from “What is your favorite color?” to “How did you come up with the name Antiquitas?” and “When did you start composing music?”

Partnerships are inherent in IPEI’s grants and programs. Teacher Grants must involve a Community Partner, and many other grants also include participation of partners from within the district or from the community or the colleges. Affiliates and Kids Discover the Trail! also include partners ranging from Code Red Robotics mentors to Discovery Trail educators.

Judy Cogan of Ithaca High received one of the Teacher Grants funded in memory of Charles E. Treman Jr. entitled “Ghana and Ithaca: A Cross-cultural Exchange”. “I partnered with an Ithaca High graduate who is in the Peace Corps and a local American Sign Language interpreter. They each brought a wealth of experiences that helped my students understand and appreciate other cultures. They opened their hearts and minds when introduced to the culture of a deaf high school in Ghana, and they built relationships as we broke down stereotypes.”

Code Red RoboticsCode Red Robotics is an Ithaca High student club and an IPEI affiliate. The team participates in the national FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics program. The FIRST program inspires students through hands-on real-world experience, providing challenging opportunities to explore engineering and science, as well as community service, public relations, finance, leadership, effective communication, and teamwork. Student interest in Code Red is growing—participation increased by 30% from 44 in 2011 to 57 in 2012, including 25% females.

Code Red is student-lead and guided by 20 adult mentors. They planned, coordinated and managed team activities such as engineer-ing, documentation, fund raising, public relations, as well as commu-nity service and outreach to introduce elementary and middle school students to technology and science.

During a six-week period, the team analyzed a game released by FIRST and then designed, fabricated, and built a 120 lb. robot to compete at regional competitions at RIT and Washington DC. At RIT the team received the Engineering Inspiration Award celebrating outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering and engineers, both within their school and their community. This is the second highest team award FIRST bestows. The award provided support for registration and robot shipping to the International Championship in St Louis in April. Thanks to overwhelming support from the community, the team met their fundraising goal so 39 students, eight mentors, two faculty and one chaperone could make the trip where they experienced success, reaching the finals in one of the four divisions.

The team’s service and outreach focus increased fivefold from the previous year. The students organized an Open House in February which introduced 200 community members to FIRST science and technology programs for high school and elementary students including Jr Lego League. In addition to service related to robotics, Code Red volunteered at Loaves and Fishes, and at playground builds at Belle Sherman and Enfield.

Code Red Robotics receives generous support from the community and local companies. Sponsors include Kionix, BAE Systems, Autodesk, BorgWarner Morse TEC, CBORD, Cornell School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, GORGES, Cornell NanoScale Science & Technology, Cornell Computing and Information Science, Goodrich ISR, Holt Brothers Real Estate, and Holt Architects, Ithaca College Humanities and Science, jcpenney, Park Foundation, Vector Magnetics, VFW Post 961, AccuFab, Incodema, Innovative Metal Works, U-Haul of Ithaca, and Purity Ice Cream. The team is assisted by the Ithaca City School District, ICSD Board of Education, Ithaca High School and IPEI.

Fine Arts Booster GroupThe FABG works in partnership with the ICSD to advocate, support and celebrate all the arts for all the kids, working toward a vision of increased student access, participation and equity in the arts programs. Formed in 2001 and affiliated with IPEI, the group believes the arts—music, dance and visual, literary and theater arts —are a central part of every child’s public school education.

FABG is open to all K-12 staff, parents, students and community members. The booster volunteers communicate arts news through a listserv, award mini-grants to teachers, repair used instruments and donate them to the district, produce the secondary school concert and play programs, and connect community resources to the schools.

FABG celebrated its tenth anniversary by creating “Ten Stories for Ten Years” articles about its activity and impact. These articles are available on the booster website, www.fabgithaca.org. The stories include: “Our Wonderful Affiliation with IPEI, Making the Beginning Possible”, “The Power of Co-Curricular Activity: After

School Rules”, “All I Really Need To Know I Learned Doing Public Art: Remembering the Watershed Wall”, “Our Teachers’ Wisdom”, “Support Promotes Student Activity and Access: Grants and Instrument Recycling”, “Artists in the Classroom: Partners for Learning”, “Support Access for All”, “Community Partners for Student Needs”, “Arts Reach”, and “Celebrating Volunteers”. Boosters marched in the Ithaca Festival parade with the Ithaca High School Band to conclude the anniversary celebration.

AFFILIATES

“Students were fully engaged and interacted with each other in positive, mutually- supportive ways. This was a great boost in building social skills and an awareness of community within the school.” —FABG Grant Recipient

IPEI Roundtable IPEI convenes a monthly meeting of representatives of organizations that are actively supportive of the ICSD. The purpose is to offer time for collaboration, focused discussions on pertinent issues, and sharing district and community group news. All are welcome to attend.

Adult Spelling BeeIn addition to being good fun and intellectually stimulating, our 13th annual bee raised over $10,000 for IPEI’s grant programs. Individuals, organizations, and businesses from all parts of the community form three-person teams,

pay entry fees, study (sometimes!), and meet in the high school gym for two hours to enjoy the challenge of spelling. The Spellicans were champions of the 2011 Bee that was sponsored by Chemung Canal Trust Company, Cat’s Pajamas and Wells Fargo Advisors, and broadcast live on WNYY by Cayuga Radio Group.

TransportationIPEI works with the School Success Transportation Coalition that includes current and retired teachers, PTA and school board representatives, and staff from the Tompkins County Youth Services, Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Way2Go, and the Department of Social Services. Transportation Liaisons were recruited for each ICSD school and a pilot was initiated with retired educators volunteering to drive students and families.

KDT! began in 2005 as a once-a-year field trip by ICSD elementary classes to their assigned Discovery Trail organization, yet has grown into an enriched learning experience for teachers, students, and Discovery Trail educators alike. KDT! gives every student in the district these same opportunities during elementary school. Two classrooms from different schools participate together with each student having a “buddy” from the other school. The goal is for students from different neighborhoods to get to know each other before middle school using the shared curricular and social experiences. In addition, KDT! Books that correspond with the curriculum are provided to all students each year at every grade levels. The program is professionally evaluated each year. During 2011, a survey of sixth graders was also undertaken to gain student input into the effectiveness of the social interaction component of KDT!. When asked if they remember at least one of their buddies, 94% did; had they seen one or all of his/hers, 77% did; and had they become “friends”, 54%. Sixth graders also made suggestions to improve the buddy aspect of KDT!

Last year’s fifth-graders were the first class to complete the entire KDT! program comprised of learning experiences with the seven Discovery Trail museums and the public library, depending on when they entered the district. This milestone, called “Full Circle”, was celebrated on a May Saturday with families invited to explore the Discovery Trail, and bus rides to and from sites and schools.

INITIATEIPEI’s name includes the word “initiative” to underscore our emphasis on creativity and responsiveness, community involvement, and an enhanced educational experience. These activities are most often implemented by community organizations and/or the school district, although Kids Discover the Trail! is an example of an initiative which has needed IPEI’s continuing leadership. In keeping with our mission of integrating Ithaca’s extensive community resources into the education of our district’s students, IPEI strives to make connections whenever possible. This includes convening various groups and individuals inside and outside the district to engage them when new ideas are proposed. We encourage members of the community to talk with us about their ideas.

IPEI undertook a $600,000 capital campaign to expand our grants and programs so we can respond to new and emerging opportunities, to strengthen our volunteer-run organizational model by hiring staff, and to begin an endowment to support IPEI’s future.

We will be listening to the teachers, students, parents, school leaders, and the community as we decide how to expand our programs and grants. One emerging opportunity was embraced when IPEI allocated campaign funds for the ICSD Teaching and Learning with Technology 1:1 Initiative.

Right: Superintendent Dr. Luvelle Brown asks fifth graders about the mobile devices they use in class. IPEI and our donors supported ICSD’s pilot of each student having use of an iPad at several grade levels and subject areas.

Above: Community members gathered in October 2011 to celebrate the impact IPEI has had during our first fifteen years.

Students and their parents have enjoyed the program. “I’ve been able to experience many sites and museums in my community,” said Mary, a fifth-grader at Caroline Elementary. Her favorite visit was the fourth-grade trip to the Eight Square Schoolhouse. “I like ‘Little House on the Prairie’ stories. I felt like I got to experience what it was like to go to a one room school house,” she said.

She also enjoyed the KDT! visit to the Johnson Art Museum at Cornell. “I love art and I got to learn many forms of art,” she said. “In addition I was very young, and my teacher was really good at preparing my class.”

“It is a fun and academic experience for our children,” said Mary’s mother. “Although I feel fortunate that I can visit many of the Discovery Trail sites with my children, there are many others in our community who would not have the opportunity to have these enriching experiences if it were not for KDT!.”

Nathaniel, a fifth-grader at Belle Sherman, said he liked the buddy program: “One of my favorite memories was being buddies with my new best friend who went to Northeast. I liked that you get to meet people who are going to the same middle school as you.”

Nathaniel’s mom, added, “I like the buddy pairing so students will have familiarity with kids from other schools. They also get to experience these special places in a way that is different than if they go with their families.”

Charles W. and Phyllis B. Brodhead Fund

The Phyllis B. Brodhead Library Media Technology grant helps the library media centers keep current with technological advances. This year’s grant purchased Playaways, digital audio books in self-contained portable units, which offer challenged readers an opportunity to hear a book read while following the text. The first Red and Gold Grants to be awarded in Chuck Brodhead’s memory will occur this year.

The Rella and Barney Cohn Music Scholarship Fund

ICSD students are encouraged to pursue their instrumental music interest by participating in summer music activities with support from these scholarships, especially middle school students at a pivotal time in their musical development. The donor recognizes the exceptional work of Michael Allen, instrumental music teacher, as inspiration for the Cohn Scholarship in support of the Summer Band Camp.

Noreen Moore Scholarship

The late Noreen Moore believed in strengthening families by providing support for all community members; she fought through-out her life for families in need. To continue that legacy, this memorial scholarship fund assists a high school senior planning to study social work and/or early childhood education. This year’s awardee was Carolyn Eggleston.

Ithaca High School Senior Class Fund Awards

The New Teacher Award, honoring a new high school teacher who exemplifies enthusiasm and creativity in teaching, was given to Leann Donnelly. The Student Organization Award for a club that makes a significant positive impact on student life was presented to the Red Cross Club.

Raymond C. Loehr Awards

To honor his science education career, the family of Raymond Loehr provides an award to an underclass student who shows promise in environmental science as well as another recognizing outstanding and innovative science teaching. This year’s student was Natalia McClellan; Jennifer Wilkie received the teaching award.

Charles E. Treman, Jr. Teacher Grants

To honor their past chairman and president, the Tompkins Trust Company established an endowment at the Tompkins Charitable Gift Fund in Charles Treman’s name that annually supports Teacher Grants for creative classroom projects involving com- munity partners.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES

Connecting School and Community CampaignIPEI relies on the generosity of individuals, businesses and foundations to support its overall mission and programs and to meet the growing demand for grants. Special sponsorship opportunities are also available for all our programs and affiliates. We gladly accept cash, checks or credit card transactions at any time. Online contributions through our website are secure and convenient. We can also provide letters acknowledging in-kind contributions. Gifts of securities (also stocks and bonds) can be used to support IPEI. In addition to the IRS income tax deduction benefits, you may also reduce or eliminate your capital gains tax by making gifts of IRA distributions to charitable organizations such as IPEI.

Our Children * Our Schools * Our Future Capital CampaignIPEI ‘s first capital campaign exceeded its $600,000 goal with over 230 donors making gifts and three-year pledges. Three priorities will be funded with this support: expanding current programs and grants, building organizational capacity, and growing an endowment for IPEI’s future.

Corporate Honor RollIPEI recognizes its “Corporate Honor Roll” of local businesses and foundations that support IPEI and its programs. Strong local schools are essential for a strong community. Local organizations can participate in strengthening public education through IPEI’s activities.

Planned GiftsRemembering IPEI in your estate plans is a wonderful way to make a lasting gift to the future of our community’s children, teachers and community. Gifts made through retirement plans, life insurance, real estate, and bequests are actively encouraged. You can work with your own professional adviser; IPEI’s volunteer with expertise in gift planning can also assist with such transactions. IPEI has established the Founders Circle, a planned giving society, to thank the six we know have made planned gifts and to encourage others to make similar legacy gifts.

Awards from Special FundsIPEI’s designated and memorial funds enhance the future of our schools and preserve the memory of those honored. Donors can work to create funds or add to the following established funds at any time. Each fund has an agreement regarding distribution of grants or awards based on the fund’s principal and investment income.

Ian Alberta Memorial Fund

Classmates, family, and friends of Ian Alberta established this fund in his honor to support the Kids Discover the Trail! activities at the Cayuga Nature Center where Ian volunteered.

Carol J. Buckley Scholarship for Students in the Arts

Established by Carol’s family and friends desiring to keep her memory alive, the fund provides a scholarship to a talented student pursuing advanced study in the arts; this year’s recipient was Ananda Brutvan. The fund also provided support for arts-related educational programs.
