IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

Page 2: It's A Man's World

Without sounding like a raving feminist, as a woman I like to think that there is no job that a woman couldn’t do if she put her mind to it. Now I don’t mean jobs like fixing a tap or changing the oil in your car, I mean a career. Women can run multi billion dollar corporations, they can fly RAF aircrafts and can lead political parties but are there some jobs which are simply suited to men based on physicality more than brains?

This presentation attempts to look at just a few of those jobs in life where being a man is better

MANNED GUARDING

Manned guarding isn’t named as such due to the gender you have to be to fulfill the role; it is simply demonstrative of the action. In this role you are tasked to man something. Often manned guarding roles include patrolling offices blocks, building sites or areas of private land to ward of trespassers and thieves. Alternatively you could be providing security services for a building, venue or individual where your presence is needed to keep order and protect.

MANNED GUARDING CONT.

Whilst women are capable of doing this job, physically we don’t have the same presence as men when it comes to stature, nor do we have the authoritative tone of voice or perceived aggression. Whilst women are as observant and can be trained to be as powerful as men, when it comes to perceptions of fear, we just aren’t scary enough.

CONSTRUCTION

Again, there are women who work in construction and there are jobs within the construction industry that are in fact better suited to a woman, but when is comes down to it the lifting and shifting of timber, concrete and steel is better to suited to male physicality. They are broader and stronger and can perform manual labour based tasks faster and with less assistance than women.

BE A BISHOP

Currently women are unable, by law to become Bishops. Whilst there are parties lobbying to change this ruling, from the time the church began until now only men can rise to the rank of Bishop in the church. Those in opposition of the change believe that the scriptures require male headship in the church.

SAS

Founded in 1941 the SAS is an elite sector of the British Army who is tasked primarily with dealing in counter terrorism during times of peace and special operations during times of war. The level of skill and fitness you need to have ruled out all women from becoming members until 2006 when 2 women successfully completed the 23mile hike whilst carrying full kit and sleeping in mud filled trenches. However on completion of the grueling course they were still omitted from joining the SAS, making it one of the only jobs in the world, which can’t be done by a woman.

Whilst the feminist in me believe there is no job a woman couldn’t do, I can see why there are certain jobs women just aren’t suited too. Physically we are better suited to some tasks more than others, but as long as there are men to fill the roles that women can’t, when working towards a common

goal, does it really matter?
