Introduction

The ITS Architecture provides a common framework for planning, defining, and integrating intelligent transportation systems. It is a mature product that reflects the contributions of a broad cross-section of the ITS community like transportation practitioners, systems engineers, system developers, technology specialists, consultants, etc.

System

A system is a set of interacting or interdependent components forming an integrated whole or a set of elements (often called ’components’) and relationships which are different from relationships of the set or its elements to other elements or sets.

System Engineering

Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary field of engineering that focuses on how to design and manage complex engineering projects over their life cycles.

Architercture

Architecture is both the process and product of planning, designing, and construction, usually of buildings and other physical structures.

ITS Architercture

ITS stands for Intelligent Transportation Systems. The ITS Architecture provides a common framework for planning, defining, and integrating intelligent transportation systems. It is a mature product that reflects the contributions of a broad cross-section of the ITS community like transportation practitioners, systems engineers, system developers, technology specialists, consultants, etc.

ITS Architecture

The architecture defines:•Conceptual model•The functions (gather traffic information or request a route) that are required for ITS•The physical entities or subsystems where these functions reside (the field or the vehicle).•The Communication Architecture

Need of ITS Architecture

can be planned in a logical manner;integrates successfully with other systems;meets the desired performance levels;has the desired behavior;is easy to manage;is easy to maintain;is easy to extend;Satisfies the expectations of the users.

Benefit

The use of an ITS Architecture ensures an open market permits economies of scale ensures consistency of information encourages investment ensures inter-operability automated traffic management; support for public transport operations; demand management; traveler information and trip planning services; freight and fleet management; incident management and support for emergency services; electronic payment services, and fee collection; advanced in-vehicle technologies.
