Dear Parents and Students, Hello and welcome to Second Grade! It’s going to be an incredible year filled with wonderful activities, amazing learning experiences, and new adventures. In Second Grade, we will continue to work on building a strong foundation of basic skills. Our expectation is that the children will become life-long readers as they experience a variety of books and genres. They will develop critical thinking skills, apply comprehension skills and strategies, read with greater fluency, and expand their vocabulary. We will also introduce the students to an array of mathematical concepts within our math curriculum. Students will invent, question, and explore various strategies to solve problems and deepen their understanding of these concepts. Second Grade is a time when the children become more independent and self-reliant learners. We are looking forward to working together to make this year an exciting and successful learning experience for your child. Enjoy the rest of your summer and we will see you in the fall. Math Skills for Second Grade

Skill: Count by 2s, 5s, 10s.

Idea: Use hundred grid and color squares to match counting

pattern.

Example: by 2s

Skill: Instant recall of addition and subtraction facts. (1-10)

Idea: Using addition and subtraction flashcards play the card game

of War. Divide deck evenly and each person places a card face up.

The person with the highest total takes both cards. Play continues

until one person has all cards (use for subtraction or addition).

Idea: Beat the Clock

Using the addition or subtraction problem sheet, have your child

complete the page. To make this more interesting, set a timer or use

a clock to time the activity. Begin with a large amount of time and

progressively reduce time by 30 seconds. You may want to start with

five minutes.

Skill: Telling Time to hour, ½ hour.

Idea: Ask your child to tell you the time periodically throughout the

day. Ask questions such as “What time will it be in 30 minutes. If your

child owns a watch have them use it to make telling time part of

their day.

Idea: Make a clock using a paper plate, brad, and use paper to

make minute and hour hands. Have your child number the clock

face and ask them to show various times. Start with on the hour,

move to ½ hour, then ¼ hour. If your child is ready, have them move

to the 5 minute mark (example: 1:35, 2:55).

Skill: Place Value (ones, tens, and hundreds)

Idea: Have different color chips or markers (poker chips work well)

and use each color to represent each place value. White are ones,

blue are tens, and red are hundreds. Give your child various one,

two and three digit numbers that they can represent by using chips.

(Example: 42: 4 blue chips, 2 white chips)

***The First In Math program will be available for the students to

continue using until JULY 31st. It is highly recommended that the

children use this program as often as possible to review skills as well

as increase speed and accuracy of basic math facts.

Dear Parents,

In an effort to keep our students reading this summer we have established a set of guidelines. In

order to fulfill the summer reading requirements please refer to the criteria listed below.

Children entering second through fourth grade have the choice to complete a book report or an

Accelerated Reader type quiz, called Book Adventure, for each required book. Incoming fifth

graders must complete the Book Adventure quiz and a book report for each required book.

Please refer to the enclosed suggested list of books for your child to select from.

Attached is the book report format as well as the directions for registering and completing a quiz

with Book Adventure. On the first day of school, your child must bring either their book reports

or the quiz printouts from Book Adventure (grades 2-4) or both (grade 5). Thank you for your

After you finish reading a book, click Quiz-o-matic. Enter the title of the book you have just read.

A quiz for that book will appear. Answer the questions and click submit. Once you have clicked

enter, your score will automatically appear and you will see how many points you have earned.

Click on Win Prize to view how many points you have earned. You can also trade them in for

prizes. Click to view prizes available and points needed for each prize. Pick one or two you would

like to earn and past the number necessary near the computer or in your bedroom to help you

remember to keep reading!!!

This is a very easy site to navigate. You can easily manage your account. It will automatically keep

track of the books you have read and the points you have earned. Save them and earn a big prize.

Reports allow you as a registered parent to view and monitor your children's

Book Adventure progress. The first chart on the page lists all Readers who are

connected to your account. This report lists children by their User Name, along

with their cumulative score, available points, total books read, last book quizzed,

score on last quiz, and date of last quiz. Clicking on a child's name generates

the individual status report, which shows each book that your child has read

and been quizzed on, the date each quiz was taken, and the highest score on

each book quizzed.

To print a copy of your child’s individual report for the summer: Go to Parent’s Place, Click on

Reports, click the red print button.
