At a recent clergy retreat I attended we prayed aprayer that went something like this O Lord keepus far from the riches of the world Each of uswas sincere in our prayers Later it occurred to me that God is indeedanswering that prayer Many churches find thatmoney is their limiting factor Im going out on alimb here But I dont think its because thesechurches are full of poor people Its because theyact poor While the author of 1 Timothy 610 writes For the

love of money is a root of all kinds of evil we sometimes act as though money itself is theroot of evil The truth is money is simply a tool through which we express ourvalues continue reading

2015 RX CONSULTATIONEach year the Rx ConneXion Steering Committee aprogram of United Methodist Volunteers InMission North Central Jurisdiction offers a training learning event especially for medical volunteers (butnot exclusively) called the Rx Consultation It istypically hosted by a United Methodist Church activelyengaged in mission Over the past 11 years this eventhas moved around the North Central Jurisdiction in theattempt to give as much exposure as possible to all 11Conferences This year the West Ohio Conference ishosting the event at Scioto Ridge UMC in Dublinfrom October 9shy11 The hoped for outcomes of the October consultationare

equip team leaders and members to better servewith the communities they are visitingto gain a better understanding of the role of UMVIM journeys and medical missionsto take lessons learned in OH (including community outreach and prenatal care etc) tothe field through volunteer teamsteaching members of our jurisdiction about the outreach of the United Methodist Churchboth in Ohio and around the globelearning to be in mission with our neighbors around the world

Those with a cultural background from Appalachia arein city and rural areas throughout Ohio Oftentimeswe do not understand how important it is to buildrelationships before offering our view of how to helpor come alongside those in need At two events taking place at Pleasant Grove UMCnear Zanesville we will be introduced to Appalachianand poverty cultures understand those we seek toserves value learn about proven ministries whichare making a kingdom difference discover grantsavailable for ministry learn best practices forworking with the poor learn how to develop justiceand mercy ministries and culturally what spiritualityand discipleship means to those we seek to serve These two workshops on September 19 and October 31 will feature practical and contextualspeakers from Pennsylvania West Virginia and Ohio There will be no repeat speakersbetween the two sessions so the greatest value will come from attending both sessionshowever each session stands alone and will be of great benefit Bring a team and discover thatevery size church can make a difference For more information Contact Debbie Ketcham at6145802382 Brochure

4 KEYS TO CLOSING THE BACK DOORI had an extended conversation with a pastor of a church this past week The topic was notthat different from those Ive had with church leaders for nearly twentyshyfive years Thepastors words were similar to those Ive heard repeated hundreds of times We have a prettygood front door with a healthy number of guests And weve had a steady increase in ournumber of new members Our problem is really not the front door its the back door If wecould just keep a fourth of all those who become involved in our church for a few months or

4 KEYS TO CLOSING THE BACK DOORI had an extended conversation with a pastor of a church this past week The topic was notthat different from those Ive had with church leaders for nearly twentyshyfive years Thepastors words were similar to those Ive heard repeated hundreds of times We have a prettygood front door with a healthy number of guests And weve had a steady increase in ournumber of new members Our problem is really not the front door its the back door If wecould just keep a fourth of all those who become involved in our church for a few months or
