Technology Leadership Symposium: Mobile Learning Thank you to all that helped make this year’s Technology

Leadership Symposium a success!

The daylong conference kicked off with the keynote speakers Elliot Soloway and Cathleen Norris describing their vision of how mobile learning can and is already transforming learning. Mobile technology has the potential to move beyond enhancing or enriching a lesson so that educators are better able to meet learning needs of individuals and change the environment to meet the needs of a new erra of learners.

The Symposium focused on multiple technologies: cell phone computes, iPads, iPods, netbooks, and other handheld devices are additional specific tools with which educators can create new content, lessons, and learning experiences for students. As students are already using these tools outside of the classroom, technology advances at super speed, wireless becomes more readily available everywhere and costs come down the advancement of mobile learning in the classroom is making great leaps and bounds. This technology is not going anywhere. As the keynote speakers might say, “It is inevitable”.

To learn more about mobile learning or the keynote speakers, to start this process in your classroom, or if you attended the event and would like more information please go to https://sites.google.com/a/itsco.org/mobile-learning/home and take a look at our online resources from our roundtable sessions.

Book Talking with Students

Digital Book Talking is a great way to get students interested in reading books. In the past year we have worked with a number of central and southern Ohio school districts creating student Book Talks. Using a Flip camera to record the video, students planned, created and shared their favorite books via the web.

Check out all our student videos at http://itscobooktalks.infohio.org.

If you are interested in getting your students involved and becoming part of our Book Talk community please check out our Book Talk class. Through the class you will receive a Flip camera, support materials, professional development, networking opportunities with other interested teachers and access to uploading your student video to iTunes U and the ITSCO Book Talk Infohio web site.

• ITSCO hosted workshop10-3: 2/18/11@Marion; 2/24/11@ITSCO, $250 Advantage & Premium, $275 Basic (includes training for 1, book and 1 Flip camera)

• 3 hour workshop at your school$1150 Advantage and Premium, $1600 Basic (includes 5 Flip cameras, book, and training for up to 10 participants)

If you are interested in participating in live Book Talks, sign-up for our Interactive Video Conference Literature Lounge Series. Every other month Worthington Public librarians present book talks on a variety of topics. Each session is 45 minutes and gives participants a chance to hear about new and popular titles as well as ask questions about the books.

Check out our web site at http://itsco.org/content/featured-programs-literature-lounge to find registration information and an updated list of sessions.

Learning for the Digital Age is a professional development initiative for Ohio’s K-12 administrators and teachers that explores the role of technology in supporting critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork and communication -- the skills students need to be effective in today’s classroom and tomorrow’s workplace. This statewide collaboration of Ohio’s Educational Technology Agencies, Educational Television Stations, and eTech Ohio provides high-quality interactive training for educators to help students use technology to master these essential skills for success throughout life.

The five-hour face-to-face Overview Training available as part of this initiative allows participants to explore the “what”, “why” and “how” of using technology in the classroom to foster the ”Four C’s”: Critical thinking, Creativity, Collaboration and Communication. Participants will engage in hands-on activities that allow them to experience and practice the “Four C’s” during the training using a selection of commonly available technology tools and digital resources. Extended Learning opportunities will be available through a series of follow-up trainings that explore specific technologies in greater depth.

Overview Trainings and Extended Learning Opportunities are offered regionally January through June 2011 at $100 per seat. As part of this statewide initiative, complimentary registrations are reserved for all public districts and community schools. Regional Educational Technology Agencies are working directly with district superintendents to coordinate the use of these complimentary registrations.

Share how you use technology in your classroom, be featured in the ITSCO newsletter, and WIN $50!

We’re looking for dynamic teachers to share their classroom technology experiences with other educators.

Write a short essay telling us about a favorite lesson that integrates technology, and you may be the educator in the Teacher Spotlight for the next ITSCO newsletter! As a thank you for sharing your innovative lessons, ITSCO will give the winning teachers a $50 pre-loaded credit card! Tell us what subject and grade level you teach, what specific technology you use in your classroom and your classroom outcomes. You may want to include preparation information, overall objectives, learning or teaching styles, or any other relevant information.

Each submission should be 500 - 750 words in length, include two photos of students or teachers using the technology, and a completed photo release form. Entries should be mailed or emailed to ITSCO. We look forward to hearing how you use technology in your classroom!

All entries will automatically be submitted for the statewide ITIP monthly contest, where you could win a Flip Camera as well!

Host a Summer Academy! Districts that provide meeting space for an ITSCO Summer Academy will receive complementary registrations. Call or email if your district would like to host or for more information.

“B” is for LifeBio Bits is a WOSU-produced series of eight learning modules clarifying and demonstrating the diversity and interdependence of plant and animal life.

One sequence, recorded at the Ohio State University Museum of Biodiversity, examines skulls of selected animals to demonstrate how their teeth were adapted to the food they eat—a carnivore

(mountain lion) differentiated from an herbivore (deer) and an omnivore (bear). The module is targeted to third grade to help students “relate animal structures to their specific survival functions.”

WOSU also visited the Orton Geological Museum at Ohio State. The curator gives viewers a close look at skeletons and fossils of extinct animals such as the giant ground sloth, mastodon and trilobites and infers essential characteristics by comparing them to living animals to whom they have close resemblance—the ground sloth, the elephant and the horseshoe crab respectively. The video module is targeted, again, to third graders to showthem that “extinct organisms may resemble organisms that are alive today.”

The six other sequences transport the learner to the Great North Woods of Michigan to observe and take in profound lessons from the forest.

Bio Bits captures the observations of ecologist Peter Curtis as he stands on an industrial lift—60 feet above the ground— overlooking a forest canopy. He is tracing the path of light energy and plant photosynthesis down through the forest starting at the top of the canopy with the tallest trees and down to the spring wildflowers on the forest floor. He explains, in the process, how solar energy is converted to chemical energy. The module is intendedto show students, primarily in Grade 5, “the role of producers in the transfer of energy entering ecosystems as sunlight to chemical energy through photosynthesis”

The video field trip also shows the effects of forest fires on biodiversity and how the forest serves as a living laboratory for studying aspects of climate change. Check out Bio Bits at Ohio iTunes U, http://go.osu.edu/BE2.
