JEAN-PHILIPPE TOUFFUT (2003): Institutions, Innovation and Growth. Selected Economic Papers. Edward Elgar Publishing Limited.

The first book in this important new series, under the general editor-ship of Nobel Laureate Robert Solow, Institutions, Innovation and Growth assembles a stellar cast of international contributors. Lead-ing economists join the debate on innovation and economic growth, focussing on a broad spectrum of issues ranging from labour markets to corporate governance. Growth paths within the OECD are also assessed, with particular emphasis on contrasts between US and European models. The book seeks to identify those institutional fac-tors, taking into account different national trajectories, which might serve to promote economic growth in Europe.

JONATHAN M.HARRIS and NEVA R. GOODWIN (2003): New Thinking in Macroeconomics. Social, Institutional, and Environmental Perspectives. Edward Elgar Publishing Limited.

Presenting new and innovative perspectives on macroeconomics at the national and international levels, the editors bring together contributions on a wide range of topics including: current issues of globalization; transitional economics; inequality; unemployment; national and international debt; and the relationship of macroeconomic policies to the environment. The contributors draw on expertise in a variety of areas to provide insight into debates on macroeconomic policy in the US and Europe, as well as in developing and transitional economies.

THEA KUPPENS, HENRIËTTE PRAST and SANDRA WESSELING (2003): Banking Supervision At The Crossroads. Edward Elgar Publishing Limited.

The important practical and theoretical issues highlighted in this volume clearly demonstrate that banking supervision currently stands at a crossroads. The detailed, objective discussions of these themes and the sensible conclusions drawn will undoubtedly help policymakers to decide which path to take. The original contributions from high-level practitioners and academics from around the world will also be of great interest to commercial bankers, and academics and researchers of banking, finance and monetary economics.

CHIEN-HSUN CHEN and HUI-TZU SHIH (2004): Banking and Insurance in the New China. Competition and the Challenge of Ac-cession to the WTO. Edward Elgar Publishing Limited.

Financial reform has been a major concern for China´s transitional economy-especially in the realms of banking and insurance-since accession to the WTO in 2001. This book scrutinizes the development and limitations of these industries during the process of institutional transformation, and demonstrates that they are now facing severe challenges as well as opportunities. The relationships between the market structure, behaviour and perfo-mance of China´s banking and insurance industries are analysed. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threat (SWOT) approach is utilized in investigating the impact of WTO accession on Chinese banking and insurance, and strategies for the prevention of future financial crises are prescribed.

PATRICK MINFORD (2004): Money Matters. Essays in Honour of Alan Walters. Edward Elgar Publishing Limited.

As a tribute to the exceptional contributions of Alan Walters to mon-etary theory and policy, this book draws together a distinguished cast of international contributors to write about money. In a series of essays they review controversies in monetary economics and debate current policy issues. Combining theoretical analysis with policy evaluation, this book touches on a whole spectrum of issues ranging from monetary union and exchange rate regimes, to credit rationing and policy games.

ROBERT BOYER (2004): The Future of Economic Growth. Edward Elgar Publishing Limited.

In this book, Robert Boyer follows the origins, course and collapse of the “new economy” and proposes a new interpretation of US dyna-mism during the 1990s. He argues that the diffusion of information and communication technologies is only part of a story that also reqires understanding of the transformation of the financial system, the reorganization of the management of firms and the emergence of a new policy mix. The book includes a long-term retrospective analysis of technological innovation, and an international comparison of OECD countries delivers an unconventional and critical assessment of the hope and the hype of the “new economy”.

L. RANDALL WRAY (2004): Credit and State Theories of Money. The Contributions of A. Mitchell Innes. Edward Elgar Publishing Limited.

In 1913 and 1914, A. Mitchell Innes published a pair of articles that stand as two of the best pieces written in the twentieth century on the nature of money. Only recently rediscovered, these articles are reprinted here for the first time. In addition, five new contributions analyse and extend the approach of Innes in a number of directions by including historical, anthropological, sociological, archeological, and economic analyses of the nature of money. This authoritative collection of papers is a must-read for economists, policymakers and students interested in the history of economic thought, monetary policy and economic theory.

ALAN A.RABIN (2004): Monetary Theory. Edward Elgar Publish-ing Limited.

Alan Rabin argues that new Keynesian and new classical macroeco-nomics, which have dominated the literature and textbooks, have crowded the monetary-disequilibrium hypothesis, or orthodox monetarism, off the intellectual stage. Trying to remedy this imbal-ance, the author concentrates on what he judges to be the essentials of monetary theory.Emphasizing money´s fundamental role in lubricating exchanges and promoting economic coordination, Alan Rabin argues that when the lubricant goes awry, so do the processes being lubricated. Monetary disequilibrium can have repercussions that last months and even years.

J. BARKLEY ROSSER (2004): Complexity in Economics. Volume I. Methodology, Interacting Agents and Microeconomic Models. Edward Elgar Publishing Limited.

Our approach will be to present papers that tend to emphasize the more recent viewpoint, which is clearly what is generally driving more recent research. However, we shall also include certain papers that represent the earlier perspectives of the broader definition of economic complexity that we have presented. This will allow for historical accuracy and also show the essential unity of these approaches as many papers will mix various of these supposedly distinct viewpoints.

ANDRÉ FOURÇANS and RAPHAËL FRANCK (2003): Currency Crises. A Theoretical and Empirical Perspective. Edward Elgar Publishing Limited.

Many Theoretical and empirical analyses have been put forward to explain currency crises, but this book is unique in providing an extensive perspective and a comprehensive view of the field.André Fourçans and Raphaël Franck assert that models concern-ing the outbreak and the propagation of currency crises share many similarities and may therefore be studied together. Theoreti-cal developments in the currency crises literature lead to three distinct types of models. The authors focus on these first, second and third-generation models of currency crises and also discuss the role of the international financial system in preventing cur-rency crises.

JENS FORSSBÆCK and LARS OXELHEIM (2003): Money Markets and Politics. A Study of European Financial Integration and Monetary Policy Options. Edward Elgar Publishing Limited.

The dramatic evolution of financial markets in the 1980s and 1990s, accompanied by increasing institutional integration be-tween nations (most notably in the EU), have fostered a wide-spread belief that governments –particularly those of small econo-mies- have essentially lost the power to pursue sovereign, inde-pendent economic policies. At the same time, it is widely assumed that the loss of monetary-policy control is a major opportunity cost for a country adopting a rigid exchange-rate regime or, in the European context, for countries joining the EMU.

PHILIPPE BURGER (2003): Sustainable Fiscal Policy and Economic Stability. Theory and Practice. Edward Elgar Publishing Limited.

The public debt/GDP ratio in several countries showed the largest ever peacetime increase during the last 20 years of the twentieth century, thereby causing widespread fiscal unsustainability. Towards the latter half of the 1990s, several governments initiated steps to reverse this trend however, they frequently found that their policies were not always successful. This book examines why.

STEFANO ZAMAGNI and ELETTRA AGLIARDI (2004): Time in Economic Theory. Volume I. Edward Elgar Publishing Limited.

If anyone were to doubt whether the profession of economics has tried to tackle the problem of time, then these three volumes of es-says should resolve the issue. With very few exceptions, the mate-rial included in the present collection was published in the last 40 years. This selection criterion was adopted by mere reasons of space. Even so, many interesting contributions have been left out; Wich is a clear evidence of a growing interest within the discipline on the question of time.
