FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Reports for Semester 1 will be handed out to students to take home today, Monday 23rd June.

This will be followed by a Parent/Teacher afternoon on Tuesday 24th June from 4pm to 5pm in

the school library. I would urge all parents and caregivers to take this opportunity to speak to

teachers about the progress of their child. An alternative appointment can be made through the

front office if the above time is inconvenient.

NAIDOC Week will be celebrated during the last week of term. The school will be going to the

School Environment Block on the afternoon of Tuesday 24th June to take part in activities

around the campfire. If the weather conditions are not favourable then the activities will be

carried out at school.

The last day of term 2 is Friday 27th June.

The school will resume for students Term 3 on Tuesday 15th July.

Flu season is here!

Influenza is spread from person-to-person through the coughing or sneezing of infected peo-

ple. Remind your child about these good hygiene practices to minimise the spread of infec-

tion:

Anyone who is sick with influenza symptoms should stay home until their symptoms are

gone.

Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in

the garbage bin after use.

Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-

based hands cleaners are also effective.

Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

If you or your child develops influenza-like illness, seek the advice of your family doctor as

you would with any other illness.

The seasonal influenza vaccine, which protects against the pandemic influenza strain as well

as two other influenza strains, is now available free to eligible people. More information

about the vaccine is available from the NSW Health Immunisation Unit's vaccination page.

Previous vaccination with the pandemic influenza vaccine, Panvax® is not a barrier to also

receiving the seasonal influenza vaccine.

This week we are celebrating Naidoc Week. We have two Aboriginal stories for you.

‘Karana, the story of the father emu’ written by Uncle Joe Kirk, with Greet Casey and Sandi

WHAT! This is the story of Karana, the father emu. Karana cares for his chicks and teaches

‘The Flying Fox Warriors’ written by Percy Trezise & Dick Roughsey. Long ago in the

Dreamtime of the Australian Aboriginals, only human beings lived on Earth. It is during

this time that the Joonging people plague the Bird people by stealing their young women.

The Bird people retaliate by burning the camp of their enemy. Many of the Joonging magi-

cally escape the fire in a most creative fashion! And their imaginative survival strategy in-

spires many more wondrous changes among the Bird people.

LADIES LUNCHEON

The lunching ladies of the Ivanhoe district raised $210 for the Ivanhoe Hospital Auxiliary

through their annual mid-year get together on Saturday.

Thirty-four women travelled from as far as 150km away to attend the Ladies Luncheon in

the RSL Club’s dining room.

In addition to fantastic food and company the women were treated to a spot of shopping,

with pots and plants from Marg McKenzie at Star Point Grocery, to Nutrimetics by Kylie

Palmer and a range of Intimo clothing and lingerie from Susie Caskey.

Susie generously donated 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize in the raffle. The lucky Trish Palmer took out

first prize, winning an Intimo Smoothing Top.

Second and third went to Katie Hoenger and Beck Cahill who each won a 50 percent off

voucher to Intimo.

Laurel Blackburn took home a standard ficus tree as fourth prize. And the lucky door prize

chocolate boxes went to Betty Huntly and Susie Caskey.

A generous thank you must go to everyone who helped make the day a great success,

including organising and preparing the spread of lasagnes, veggie bakes, salads and desserts

enjoyed by all.

RSL CLUB NEWS Ivanhoe is certainly in the Super Draw with our club coming out for the past 2 weeks but

the members were not in attendance so this Thursday it will jackpot to $19,100.00. Could

we be lucky enough for 3 weeks running?

The Ladies Luncheon was held at the club on Saturday with 34 ladies in attendance from as

far away as Hillston. These luncheons are a great get together for our ladies around the

district.

On Sunday night, the member’s draw of $260.00 was won by a regular member Joan Slade.

Congratulations Joan.

The Complimentary prize was won by Robyn McMaster and the weekly prize collected by

Steve Virgo.

The Monthly prize on Sunday 29th June is a $400.00 voucher of your choice at Hay Betta

Electrical.

A coming event at the club will be the Quick Shear on the 9th August. More details later.

HACC MEETING

A HACC meeting was held at the Ivanhoe Health Service on Tuesday 17th June. The meeting was called by the chairperson, Jan Longfellow, on hearing that

money had been granted for the new building . How much and how soon and

location, were all questions to be answered. A public meeting has been advertised for Monday when hopefully these

questions will be answered.

The HACC group, consisting of Jan Longfellow, Ray Longfellow, Fay Johnstone, Fay Linnett, Lyn Howard and Heather McGinty had not met for some

considerable time.

Annette Walker was at the meeting and she expressed her concern that so little had been revealed to her as the Health Manager.

It was decided that the HACC meetings are to be held regularly which is

necessary if the group is to be viable as a community link to the Health Service.

If a community member has an issue/concern that they feel they want

mentioned at a meeting they can speak to any of the HACC members and have the questions asked at the next meeting.

KIDS FOOTBALL IN GRIFFITH 5th JULY 2014, departing 7.30am

In the spirit of the FIFA World Cup, the West Griffith Football Club have organised a fun day of basic football (soccer) drills, football-related games, a football match (or two), and a chance to watch a

match between senior teams during the school holidays.

Parents are welcome to come along and support their kids.

The drills and games are designed for kids between the ages of 6-17. All costs are covered by our

Ministry of Sports & Recreation grant.

All attending kids will receive a special Coerver football shirt, as well as lunch and snacks. Kids must bring along a hat, a water bottle, sunscreen, and tennis/sports shoes (football shoes if you’ve got

them).

Aboriginal Trainee - Water Treatment Plant Operator

Central Darling Shire is located in the far west of New South Wales and offers challenges and experiences that cannot be found elsewhere. Based in the culturally-diverse township

of Wilcannia, the successful applicant will become a vital part of both the Shire and the

community.

We are seeking an Aboriginal Trainee Water Treatment Plant Operator to join its dynamic

and versatile Engineering Department.

This is a full time position at Grade 2 within Council’s salary system.

The successful applicant will hold an unrestricted Class C Drivers license. Duties involve

assisting the Water Treatment Plant Operator with the operation and maintenance of

Councils water supply and sewerage services including the Wilcannia Water Treatment

Plant.

An understanding of EEO and WH&S principles is required for this position.

Truck Driver

White Cliffs

Applications are invited for the position of Truck Driver at White Cliffs with the Central Darling Shire Council. Duties involve truck driving and plant operation. Suitable applicants may be involved in general labouring and maintenance of community assets and road construction. They will be offered the opportunity to gain further skills. A good level of literacy and numeracy skills is required. A Class MR Driver’s licence is essential. The position has been evaluated as Grade 3 within Council’s Salary Structure. Hours of work are 38 hours per week spread over a 9 day fortnight, allowing for a rostered day off each fortnight.
