THE ORIGIN OF THE GOOD NEWS
Do we need the Old Testament? That’s a familiar
question, often asked. But as an Old Testament
scholar, John Goldingay turns that question on
its head: Do we need the New Testament?
What’s new about the New Testament? After
all, the Old Testament was the only Bible Jesus
and the disciples knew. Jesus affirmed it as the
Word of God. Do we need anything more? And
what happens when we begin to look at the First
Testament not as a deficient old work in need
of a christological makeover, but as a rich andsplendid revelation of God’s faithfulness to Israel
and the world?
In this cheerfully provocative yet probingly
serious book, John Goldingay sets the question
and views it from a variety of angles. Under his
expert hand, each facet unfolds the surprisingrichness of the Old Testament and challenges us
to recalibrate our perspective on it.

PRAISE FOR DO WE NEED
THE NEW TESTAMENT?
“A fresh, accessible and at times provocative
explanation of the enduring relevance of the Old
(‘First’) Testament for Christians. It will challenge
readers to embrace the first seventy percent of the canonas truly Christian Scripture.”
—Mark J. Boda, McMaster Divinity College,Ontario, Canada
“Goldingay turns our modern thinking on its head
and exposes the weaknesses in the way contemporary
Christians understand the Old Testament—and the
New. With thought-provoking ideas on every page,
this book will help readers look at the Old and New
Testaments in new and exciting ways.”
—Nathan MacDonald, St. John’s College,University of Cambridge
“Reflecting on new perspectives on the life of Jesus,
issues of Psalm 137, the role of church and state
and their ethics, and the hermeneutics of theological
interpretation, the reader will enjoy the questioning
and provocative mind of John Goldingay as he takes
up his laptop to challenge much of today’s conventional
Christian wisdom.”
—Richard S. Hess, Denver Seminary
AN EXCERPT
So is the First Testament story complete
on its own? The New Testament story
does add to the First Testament story,
but so do other Jewish writings from
the Greek and Roman periods such as1 Maccabees. The movie The Bourne Legacy
added to the earlier Bourne movies, but this
fact does not signify that the earlier movies
needed a fourth in the sequence. . . .
The First Testament story is not merely
the history of our distant spiritual ances-
tors, a history of a period so different
from ours that it hardly relates to our life
now that the end of the ages has come.
It is the history of a people like us in a
position not so different from ours. Our
pretense that things are otherwise puts usinto potentially fatal jeopardy.

“This is a book written specifically for those of us
who are assigned the task of developing an imagi-
nation for living the Christian faith with insight
and skill in and for a society that is disconnected
from the biblical revelation and the Jesus incarna-
tion,” Eugene Peterson writes in the foreword. “But
it is equally useful for all of us who are committed
to following Jesus with our families and coworkers
and neighbors.”
Sociology professor and spiritual director Susan
Phillips walks us through the “circus” of our cul-
tural landscape to invite us into a cultivated life of
spirituality. We want to be rooted and grounded
in Christ, but are pushed toward constant work,
alternating between performance and spectacle.
Cultivation requires a kind of attentiveness that is
countercultural to our age of distraction. These
pages unfold the spiritual practices that can lead usinto a new and delightful way of living.

We are being cultivated in ways beyond our
awareness and choosing. However, this is
not a garden-like cultivation conducive to
spiritual growth, but rather the cultivation
of a dystopian circus milieu in which a few
are high-wire performers and most are spec-tators.
Consider how you are being cultivated.
What occupies the hours of your days?
What’s trending on the media you ingest?
With whom do you spend your time, in
person and on devices, by choice or not?
Human beings are sensitive, impressionable
creatures. Babies cry when they hear another
baby crying; adults yawn contagiously. Our
desires, too, are shaped by other people’s
desires, possessions and opinions, be those
people the Joneses next door or persons in
the media. Where we live shapes our opin-
ions on public issues, and increasingly we
live in a cyberspace broadcast neighborhood.
“Susan Phillips can write this book because she lives
it. . . . This book is a deep and magnanimous invita-
tion to live in such a way that the flourishing for
which we are made can become our experience. Let
the grounded welcome she extends and encourages lead
us through the circus towards life itself.”
—Mark Labberton, president of FullerTheological Seminary
“Cultivation implies habits and discipline, and Susan
winsomely invites us into new patterns of living. A
garden implies lush green leaves and fruitful bounty,
and Susan guides our paths into joy and rest. Comeinto the garden with Jesus and journey into abun-
dant life.”
—Lynne M. Baab, author of The Power of
Listening and Sabbath Keeping
“Thank you, Susan, for giving us a glimpse of
wholeness by offering gifts of spiritual direction
through your writing.”
—Jeannette A. Bakke, author of Holy
Invitations
